I didn't like the Force Awakens, but it wasn't a straight up bad movie either and I could totally see people loving it.

Episode VIII on the other...just struck me as very poorly written and constructed.

What made the movie click for you? Did you not agree with the most common complaints or did you think they were unimportant overall?

I liked it
- Luke was cool
- Kylo was cool
- Rey was kinda filler but she interacts with two cool people so most of her scenes are cool
- I get people saying that Luke was inconsistent with the OT but whatever, I like this Luke better
- Lightspeed ramming doesn't actually make sense but, again, whatever
- Holdo was bad (independently of ^)
- I know I've listed more bad than good points but Luke and Kylo were so cool they carried the movie
- The throne room scene was so good

I really liked everything related to the Jedi. Rey, Kylo Ren, and Luke were all fantastic. Even flying Leia.
I'm happy to discuss why.

Everything else about the movie was really bad. Finn and Rose's Bogus Journey, everything related to Poe, Phasma, Benicio Del Toro, the entire notion that the rebellion is close to being wiped already and that this movie is "The spark that will ignite the rebellion". it's all just really dumb and poorly written.

Admiral SJW's suicide was awesome, but also kinda annoying because there's no good reason we aren't doing that all the time for how destructive that was. But mostly awesome.

Hyperspace Ram made zero fucking sense but it may have been the single coolest moment in the series. Way up there if not.

Yeah that's my only gripe with it. It's kind of a big gripe for me though as I lose the ability to suspend disbelief with any space combat in the series from here on out as you should be able to just hyperspeed ram any big ass ship to one shot it rather than risking a fleet against it. I guess it's possible they never have space combat in the series again after this though.

I loved it - favorite Star Wars movie outside of the original trilogy. The only thing I wasn't on board for was Rose.

Music was great, cinematography was great, and Adam Driver is a godly actor. I have literally 0 problems with how Snoke or Rey's parents were handled. Wouldn't be surprised to see JJ alter the latter though.

Tons of us loved the movie, we're just tired of having to endlessly defend the movie because haters gonna hate.

I think what they did with Luke was perfect. He was never a hero that stood for justice, he got dragged into a conflict because of his bloodline. The fact that he became a failure and exiled himself is something I can relate to far far more than "oh look another jesus character"

If the feeling is "I don't care if it's consistent because OT Luke sucked" I can respect that to an extent, but I feel like just doing better with the flashback stuff, maybe cutting some of the Casino planet stuff to make room, could've helped fix the character consistency issues.

The Original Trilogy was also poorly written and constructed. If you're looking for a series with good writing, then Star Wars is not the movie you are looking for.

i thought finn and rose's adventure was very entertaining, and it was hilarious to watch it fail so badly on every level

and yeah the throne room was incredible

the whole premise of the movie - that the rebels were down to their last ship - felt preposterous though

for me the A plot was good & bad, I didn't love it like a lot of people seem to and bunch of it bothers me. so that's the *good* portion, of course I'm not gonna be that favourable of the full thing

the Finn plot I actually don't hate as much as I think most people do? It was worthless filler but eh that's not the worst thing

but then to counteract that I hate the Poe plot probably more than most. The trilogy so far done a god awful job at making you care about him and it's just all so forced in this one. He's allowed to do so much fucking up even to a poorly conceived mutiny but he's just treated like "hahahah this kid's god spunk I like him", like what?

"poorly written" i'll give you since the dialogue is often clunky, though i still enjoy it (well, in ANH and ESB, anyway). but i don't see what's bad about the structure.

I don't agree that it's not consistent. It's perfectly consistent. He's just changed since then which is not the same thing.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a character no longer being the same person as when we last saw them.

There is when you have to fanfiction in the details.

Like I think there is a way to tell a story that leads Luke to that point, but as presented we didn't really feel the catalyst for the change very well. Dude was already a different character before he failed. OT Luke doesn't react in the way that causes him to fail like that.

I genuinely enjoyed Luke, Rey, and especially Kylo's storylines...though I do expect Rey's parentage is going to come into question again in IX for a number of reasons.

It was the Canto Bight sequence that drove me nuts, and Phasma deserved better.

The Poe/Holdo subplot I have mixed feelings about. The conclusion of it was cool, sure, but everything leading up to it required an excessive amount of suspension of disbelief.

Maz Kanata's appearance was pointless. Also really didn't care for BB8, though I didn't mind his role in VII.

It's a movie where the brash young protagonists manage to get the entire rebellion killed because of their stupidity and somehow they are lauded in the end as heroes.

Poe's a very well written character in The Last Jedi. He's a pretty realistic portrayal of a brash 'jock' fighter pilot who thinks he can do everything himself. We all know those type of people. Whether or not you like him is a different story. At least they fleshed him out and made him more than just another ace fighter pilot like in Force Awakens.

I wasn't really following the details sometimes, but I felt like Poe was mostly sympathetic?

It wasn't clear to me that his ideas were completely stupid, and in the face of pink-haired lady being completely enigmatic (and not very nice while doing it) it didn't seem like there was much choice.
