I have no idea how Mach Rider would work... but I trust them so it might end up cool, if he's in.

Isaac and Geno I believe it. They were some of the highly requested ones for a long time and since they have been delivering a LOT on the requested ones, they are in, no doubt in my mind.

Mach Rider makes sense to me because they always have an out of left field character that pays homage to really old nintendo (G&W, ROB, Duck Hunt). Though if I were making a fake leak I would include someone like that for that reason

I don't think it is too good to be true. It's five newcomers which lines up with the apparent number of stages based on Corocoro and the space in the stage select screen. Two are fan favourite requests, one is the next logical choice for a third party character, one is a character allegedly cut from 4 and one is the token random retro character. There's no Skull Kid or like, Bandana Waddle Dee or other highly requested characters.

The more I look at it the more I have to concede that it really must be real

So... yeah, that's interesting. Isaac, Geno, and B-K are all pretty big reveals and I'm surprised there's that many left to show. Chorus Kids and Mach Rider less likely to get the fanbase really energized so makes sense that they wouldn't be the stars of a direct.

Very excited to get rhythm heaven representation in but I've always felt lukewarm about the chorus kids as a way to do that. We'll see i guess.

Banjo and Kazooie is cool as hell.

Mach Rider is an interesting choice, I kind of wonder how integral the motorcycle will be.

I think I'd like it to be real, but I still just can't accept it.

Artsy Omni recently overlayed the different legit banners over top of the "empty" image, and confirmed that every single "mistake" in it exist only where characters originally were. There were no changes to the visible parts of the background, but there are changes/mistakes in places where you couldn't see what the background looked like. That just heavily implies the background in those areas was guessed/faked moreso than the entire background actually had changes to it.

Putting aside the leak for a moment, when can we even expect a new announcement?
There are just 41 more days to go, and if the leak is true, we still need them to reveal 7 characters (I believe Ken and Shadow will echo figthers, so in reality it's 5)

A Smash Direct is not needed anymore as they already shown 90% of the game, and they keep showing more and more everyday (small stuff, but still)
Well, unless they make a new direct to focus on the new mode (rumored to be called "Spirits")
A full Nintendo Direct is even less likely, as the last one was just 44 days ago (was supposed to be 51 days but it was delayed) and they do seem release them every 3 months now, so maybe a direct a day before Smash comes out?
But still, too many characters left, not enough instances to reveal them..unless they decide to randomly announce them

I've been wondering the same thing. I thought they said they were going to reveal every character before the game's release so I'm kinda curious how they're gonna get all these out there.

Within the next few weeks they'll probably do a Smash Direct to talk about the single player stuff and reveal whatever characters are left.

There's definitely going to be another Direct before this game releases. They have an entire mode they've been keeping secret, and even if this leak is fake, another character or two at minimum to show off.

If you really think about it though, this roster makes a lot of sense.

Note that this post speaks from the assumption that the leak is real (which I dont necessarily believe it 100%; I started leaning real, then leaned fake, now lean real again).

Ridley, K. Rool, Isaac, Geno, Banjo-Kazooie - five characters who are known to have done well on the ballot. Sakurai has acknowledged the requests for Ridley and Geno before and IIRC even said he briefly considered Geno for, I wanna say Brawl. And if you believe the development rumors, Banjo-Kazooie were considered for Smash 64. And since Isaac and K. Rool have mostly western-based fanbases, this is likely the first time Sakurai has heard their voices.

Inkling and Isabelle - New characters that are quickly being regarded among the upper tiers of Nintendo's all-stars.

Simon - Popular, classic third-party character whose company already has a rep in the game, plus he was a big NES star and is modeled as such so he doubles as a retro rep.

Daisy, Richter, Chrom, Dark Samus, Ken, Shadow - almost carbon copies of existing characters; quick and easy to make and pad the roster. Plus they were all popular choices on some level or another, aside from Richter who is a bit out of place but they added a LOT of Castlevania stuff so why not.

Mach Rider, Chorus Kids - This is where it helps to know Sakurai's style. He has always added an obscure NES character and he seems to have had his eye on Mach Rider since Melee. Pre-E3 I entered a roster contest and while I was way off on a lot of stuff I DID get Mach Rider. As for the Chorus Kids, datamining the Wii U disc reveals that there was at the very least a Rhythm Heaven stage planned, so maybe there was something to the CK rumor after all. Either way this is just the kind of WTF thing Sakurai likes to do, a la Wii Fit Trainer.

No Pokemon newcomer - It has been pointed out that there are already 9 confirmed playable Pokemon (if you count Trainer as 3, and they ARE numbered individually on the site, plus lack of stamina makes them individually mainable now). That's the same number as Mario (with the Mushroom logo) if you count Geno. A tenth would be a bit overkill. Plus Gen 7 is old news and Gen 8 is rumored to be coming out as early as next year. Sakurai could be waiting for a DLC tie-in. Or GameFreak could be the holdout.

No Zelda newcomer - there wasnt ine in Smash 4, and the only one in Brawl was a semiclone of a cut character. As most Zelda characters are just in one or two games, between 3 Links, 2 Zeldas and Ganondorf, the series is pretty well-covered.

General status update is:

-Leak is looking more fake the more that people with tons of time and art experience compare it to past murals
-A lot of the characters are probably in anyway though
-Actually it's mostly just Isaac, Isaac is probably in so I don't care about the rest anymore
-Oh yeah and Ken, he was super 100% leaked
-Every insider is still claiming Incineroar is in, even the ones who also say the leak is real, so congrats to his fans

Pretty sure this is what happened to Chrom. If Robin had been 'leaked' early on instead of him, and if he hadn't been turned into a loveable loser by the Robin trailer, I seriously doubt he gets into Ultimate.

By the way, the leak makes for a perfect select screen.

81 characters - 4 (Mii Fighters and Pokemon Trainer combined) + random = 78 (13x6)

Combine echoes onto their original fighters? That makes it 12x6.

Judging the validity of a roster based on the character select size is really dumb. There've been multiple Smash games where the select screen hasn't been perfectly even, it would be uneven anyways once DLC characters are added, and it wouldn't make the slightest amount of sense for them to create characters with the intent of balancing the select screen.

"Sakurai-san! We have an uneven menu!"
Sakurai "Quick! Let's spend extra development time on one more character to fill the gap!"
