I was trying to limit the poll to series with a minimum of three games, but with how popular it is, I put Outlast in there. Shame 10 choices is the limit, or I would have included Obscure.

I haven't found a horror game 'series' that I truly liked,l but I have some opinions:

1. The theming/branding and overall design of Five Nights at Freddy's is excellent. I don't like the games themselves, but I really like the phenomenon.

2. Dead Space 1 is probably my favourite horror game gameplaywise

3. Sweet Home is probably the best horror game made, but I usually exclude foreign games in my considerations (such as Terranigma doesn't exist)

Dead Space, I guess. I love horror games but there aren't any series that I like every game in. More like one or two from each.

There were a lot of game series that couldn't fit. I tried to include games that I believe were focused on being scary. Ones with more focus on the action, like FEAR (scary at times, sure, but mostly typical FPS), didn't make it to the poll list.

I don't play a ton of horror games. Back when I still did, early RE games and Fatal Frame were probably a toss up for which managed to creep me out more. Though the original Clock Tower released in the US (aka Clock Tower 2 in Japan) is a very close third.

It's kind of a truism that if you can shoot back at the monsters, it takes a lot of the horror out of the horror.

Early RE kind of bypassed this by having terrible controls, so even though you COULD theoretically shoot at zombies, you were never entirely sure if it was going to work. That, combined with limited ammo and healing led to the feeling of helplessness that's sort of required to really make a horror game scary.

That's also why RE7 was majorly successful at reviving the flagging franchise mostly by giving you constantly reoccurring monsters you really CAN'T fight most of the time, so a lot of the game involves running away in terror.

Not a series, but everything by Frictional Games:

Penumbra: Overture
Penumbra: Black Plague
Penumbra: Requiem
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
SOMA

I guess if I had to pick I would say Amnesia. AMfP is highly underrated IMO. It may lack some of the gameplay that made TDD great but it excels in the scares and storytelling. SOMA beats them both but is not a series. I would say a classic series like RE or Silent Hill but I only played the first one or two of them and it was so long ago.

Yet you had room for certain other titles. Tsk, tsk!

It's different with lightgun games because they control the pace and rely on jumps. Most horror games aren't scary simply because when you can control the pacing and direction, it takes away the suspense. For instance, when you know that a jump may be coming, you can choose to hold off approaching a corridor until you feel ready. In a lightgun game, the game may slow things down for a second to build up suspense, turn the corridor and... nothing... but then right after you've been lulled into a false sense of security, bam! Something happens.

Granted, a lot of lightgun games also go cartoony (CarnEvil) which can undercut a lot of that.

There are a lot of games i like on this list, i was massively into horror games when genre was thriving in Japan.
Some of the most underrated games is Haunting Ground, which was supposed to be Clock Tower game but it wasn't.
Corpse Party not really belong in this list, i think Forbidden Siren would fit here better.
I feel like it would be unfair to vote for RE or SH.
So my vote is for Fatal Frame, great series

While I had considered the game for the poll, I trimmed it in the end since it wasn't that well known a game, and didn't even get all the games released in the US. Got my own copy of Forbidden Siren 2, along with a physical copy of the PS3 game at least.

Fatal Frame, Resident Evil and Silent Hill were the three that jumped out at me the most when reading the list and, after thinking on it for a bit, I've decided that Resident Evil gets my vote. Well, more specifically, all of the main line games that used tank controls, that Code: Veronica arcade game spin-off, Outbreak File #2, 4 and 7. Resident Evil 2 is still my favorite game in the series but I have to say I played 7 recently and am loving where Capcom is taking the series right now. Sure beats the hell out of whatever 5 and 6 were supposed to be.

After that, comes Silent Hill. While SH1 was the first game to legitimately scare me even after I stopped playing it, I haven't played that game since I was a kid and only beat three SH games to date. Of those three, only SH2 was truly spectacular. SH4 was better than a lot of people give it credit for but I wouldn't rank it as high as SH2 and Homecoming simply had no right calling itself a Silent Hill game (though it was mildly enjoyable as an action game).

Then there's Fatal Frame. While the first game scares me as a grown man almlst as much as the first Silent Hill scared me as a kid (something about ghosts creep me the hell out), the truth is that's the only game in the series I've played so far and I haven't even beaten it yet. Still, for just one game to be good enough for me to even consider casting my vote for the series solely because of it is incredible and I hear that it's sequel is even better which is music to my ears. Maybe if I can get my hands on more of these games, they might even overtake the Silent Hill series as my #2 favorite.

No, the reason is that Hollywood isn't good enough with found footage and ghost movies yet. They just need to keep practicing until they get it right.

tbh, ghost movies and found footage are nowhere near as overproduced as slashers. And the found footage genre tends to be more indie than Hollywood, given that it's a justifiable way to do low-cost filmmaking.

Not sure there's such a thing as a properly set up fart joke. No matter what, they're going to stink.
