Were approaching contest season again which means everybody is talking about all kinds of characters and games and whatnot so I randomly felt like making a topic like this. It can be about game characters, series, a specific game or whatever else as long as its about video games.

The tactics games are the only good final fantasy games

Starting off strong. I havent played any of the Tactics games so I cant really comment there.

A Link to the Past isnt very good. I know its held in high regard among LoZ fans, but by the time I played it the Wii U was already out I think and the game did nothing for me. OoT is a lot better and I dont even think that game is all that great either so I guess theres two crazy opinions for me

I absolutely adore FFTA and I can't retain my interest in FFT for more than about five minutes.

XIII is the best Final Fantasy, followed by X-2 and Lightning Returns.

Persona 3 is way better than the rest (or at least P3P is).

Flareon is the best Eeveelution.

That's not crazy, this is crazy:

Out of the first 5 Zelda games, LttP and OoT are my two least favorites

(I do actually like both of them though so that kind of blunts the crazy a bit.)

My favorite character in Dragon Age: Inquisition is Sera.

Ive never even played the other 3/5 first Zelda games! Ive played ALttP, the Oracles, OoT, TP and ALBW. TPs the only one I care about though and Midna is the only decent LoZ character Ive seen

I like Sonic 2006 and I consider it more fun than just about every other Sonic Game besides Mania that came after it (and even some of the earlier 2D ones)

That's not crazy, this is crazy:

Sonic 06 is my favorite Sonic game.

I don't really care about the Sonic series that much. Like, I think S3&K is a solid platformer, but it doesn't rank up there for me. I was a Nintendo kid growing up, I guess.

But Sonic 06. Oh man. Getting a few friends together and doing a playthrough of it is magical. It's the The Room of video games. It's a bad game but it's fascinatingly bad. It's so mesmerizingly bad that it loops around to becoming interesting and it's the only game that has made me feel any connection to the Sonic characters and its universe at all, and the weird thing is that it's almost not in an ironic way. I feel like I was in a foxhole with Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. The solid-but-forgettable Genesis platformers could never make me feel that way.

None of my opinions will probably be as crazy as some of the gaming things I havent done and I have some pretty polarizing opinions especially when it comes to characters.

As an example to the first part Ive literally never played a single Street Fighter, Metroid, Metroidvania (as far as I know anyways) or Metal Gear Solid game. Ive also never played any of the original Sonic trilogy (the pinball one is the only Genesis Sonic Ive played any of)

Crazy opinions? Not sure if crazy, but I have some strong arguments regarding my unpopular ones, such as:

-Super Mario Bros. 3 is a 10/10 game, yet Super Mario World pales in comparison with a 7/10 from my part (and that's even considering I actually grew up with SMW as a kid, having only played SMB3 for the first time a little less than a decade ago).

-Zelda II is leagues better and way easier than Zelda I.

-Street Fighter II is the one and only instance of a game I've played that I consider completely and absolutely obsolete, not only in its own genre but as a whole (I haven't really played the original Mortal Kombat, but I think it could go that way as well).

I actually do own a Metroid game, but its Other M. Got it for like $5 partly because it looked fun and partly because short hair Samus. Clearly the best reasons to buy a video game am I right.

As for another opinion Im not a Smash Bros fan. The only console Smash I bought is the first and Ive never played more than a couple hours of the rest of them.

I can never remember them off the top of my head, but I'm sure I have quite a few.

Only one that immediately comes to mind is probably only crazy on this board, which is that Valkyria Chronicles really, really sucks.

Battle rankings being determined solely by turn count, and there's no way to know what the limit is for a certain rank until you've already passed it. And since battle rankings determine EXP (and I think money? It's been a while), you have to get good rankings to avoid turning the game into a grindfest. Often, that entails throwing all semblance of strategy out the window and running through maps like a madman with overpowered Scouts, just hoping that they don't get unlucky enough that they die. If you want to play it like an actual strategy game, you'll have to get used to coming to a screeching halt every couple of missions to grind skirmishes. Those are both bad gameplay loops.

I also can't stand the story or any of the characters. Rosie was the only decent one.

Oof don't get me started

- Final Fantasy IX is the worst in the series, and XV is the second best
- Uncharted 2 sucks, 1 and 3 are much better
- Mega Man sucks, both the character and games. I hated every Mega Man game I've played
- Twilight Princess is the best Zelda game
- Trails in the Sky is boring but Trails of Cold Steel is pretty good
- Every generation of gaming has been better than the last. Gaming is better than ever, 3 of my top 4 games came out in 2016 or later

Okay yeah that's fair. Story is just bad taste but scouts are probably my number one issue with the game too.

I will say that I'm not as down on it as you because I feel the following two things are true

1. Scout derping is only really the easiest strategy late once their hp gets high enough that they can run through way too much intercepting fire and their damage so high that they can easily assassinate pretty much everything. It's also really only necessary late as I feel maps for the first 2/3 of the game or so are able to be cleared with much more normal teamcomps with high ranking.

2. Exp and such matters less later in the game as I feel growth is somewhat frontloaded so it doesn't matter that much if you can't get high rankings later without derping with Scouts.

Overall I agree with the criticism but yeah I think you may be being a bit hyperbolic about how poorly the scouts mesh for the first 1/2 to 2/3 the game or so. (And late game it's more "abuse scouts for easy mode" more than "YOU MUST ABUSE SCOUTS")

As you probably guessed I still really like the game

- most JRPGs are boring to play
- N64 is the best console
- most good VGM is chiptune
- gen 1 is the best Pokmon gen
- Mario Party 9 and 10 are good
- Wii U was a good console

Yeah I mostly liked random silly minor characters

Welkin and Alicia were fine and Maximilian was good (mostly cause his Japanese VA is godlike-- his English VA is garbage in comparison) but the rest of the main characters I could take or leave really. Not offensive but not sells.

Yeah, to be fair it's been a while since I played through it so some of its problems may have become kind of exaggerated in my mind. I just remember it took me multiple start-stop playthroughs to actually finish it and I never really enjoyed it at all.

This. Well, I wouldn't phrase it quite that way. I would say it's good, was great for its time, but practically every Zelda (including all the other 2D ones) is better than it and today it may very well be the most overrated game of all time.

That probably isn't even my most controversial Zelda opinion though: Skyward Sword is my all-time favorite Zelda! Best dungeons (alongside Twilight Princess), best bosses, maybe best combat, and easily the best story in the whole series. I also think linearity actually works for Zelda, although I loved the approach BotW took as well. Linearity wouldn't work as well with something like Metroid though.

Aaaand that's also likely my most unpopular gaming opinion!

Since it was brought up, Valkyria Chronicles is one of my most hated games. It was so poorly balanced, most missions had exactly one strategy that worked and trying anything else led to an instant fail.

Yeah with multiple start stops that take makes a lot more sense.

I imagine you were just kinda bad at the game early (or didn't realize going slow mattered and just hamstrung your exp-- IIRC the game doesn't really stress the importance) and became underleveled which snowballed things in that it becomes hard to complete levels efficiently if you're underleveled.

Then for later segments Scouts become overpowered and you just assume "oh I wasn't abusing Scouts earlier that's why I had trouble getting good ranks early" when that isn't actually the case early game as they're not really overpowered then.

Well, when I say start-stop, I don't mean that I got a little bit into the game, stopped, and then picked up where I left off later. When I come back to a game after a while I almost always start over from the beginning, which is what I did with VC.

That first try I think I was just bad, yeah, but afterwards I remember I knew what was up with the EXP and everything. I definitely distinctly remember just bulldozing through at least a couple of early game maps regardless and never really hitting a mission where it felt like I was being tested too much.

Link's Awakening is massively overrated.

It's problem is that it's too easy compared to other zelda games of its era. Granted some of the modern ones are easier, but at least they have more complicated puzzles and enemies. LA is simple and devoid of a challenge.

Oh okay. Yeah I dunno then. I think for most of the game the paradigm is "pick off threats to your scouts running around with other units, rush objectives with scouts" which I think is good.

Late game you can still do this but it becomes way easier to just have the scout bulldoze as their stats become high enough that you just can ignore intercepting fire and practically snipe your targets.

Doing that early game usually just gets your Scout mowed down though as their defensive stats aren't high enough and their damage isn't high enough to really do that without support. You're actually going to have an easier time trying that with shocktroopers, though their movement is low so you still need to do some work with scouts for efficiency.

I will say I beat the game blind on my first play through without ever playing a single random encounter so it is possible to do. Had to redo a few stages many times but yeah. It does help that I'm efficiency minded in these kinda games by default so even not trying to game the system my EXP was never tanked.

Final Fantasy 6's gameplay is very poorly designed.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great game because of story and characters, and the gameplay is fun to play even, but the game sometimes seems like a jumbled mess of spells that makes it easy to break and makes some characters useless near the end.

Also every character has some experimental gameplay mechanic. Some of them, like Sabin and Shadow, are dope. Some like Gau and Cian suck balls.

Kirby's Dream Land 1 still holds pretty well even today. I might even consider it better than Dream Land 2, which I beat for the first time a few months ago.

Not sure if that's REALLY crazy though.

That said thats the only main series FF ai've played. I don't know if the whole series is like that.
