If it was 1939, you'd probably still be okay. But yeah, everybody would be in that boat where they don't speak German and they don't have a passport, meaning that they'd be stuck sneaking over the board to avoid being arrested as a spy.

Probably die from some ridiculous bacteria/viral/fungal infection within days.

And also cause the deaths of thousands from all the weird future germs that are lingering on my clothes and skin that people from the past never built immunity to.

Seriously.

Does anyone ever think about that?

Like, time travel germs.

We got so much crap on our skin....can you imagine how it could potentially mess with all the germs of the past? We have so many new strains now. Of everything. Everywhere. That whole microscopic world that had to evolve past all these immunizations and modern medicine, becoming super powerful. Take one little flu virus from 2018 into the 1930's.....and it might be another global plague. Scientists would be all confused when they look at it under a microscope, because it would be immune to so much shit. More evolved than anything else on the planet.

Take one amoeba back a couple decades, and it could probably do some serious damage in nature. Throw off the whole microscopic ecosystem.

Germs be floating up to new germs like, "Brruuuuhhh! Where'd you get that funky protein cilia from!?!?!"

And he's all like, "Duuuude. 2018!!!"

And bruh's like, *vibrates* "Whooaaaa!"

And then everyone fuckin' dies.

That wouldn't mean they would be survive the process. Though I guess you would be screwed if all bacteria in your body dies.

Why does time travel in the Terminator movies only work on organic material, but somehow layering skin over a robotic metal frame allows it to work?

There are definitely sci-fi settings where the process used to travel through time does sterilize viruses and bacteria in some way during the transfer. And since the entire idea of time travel is absolutely theoretical at this point (and mostly just borders on being magic anyway), it's not out of the question to specific it as an option.

The whole thing isnt even real, and is a hypothetical question. Lets just assume the bacteria wont affect the people, and anything your body cant handle wont hurt you due to the time difference.

Obviously, the "time radiation" kills them.

It's actually a thing in Doctor Who - repeated travel through time effectively bleeds a type of radiation called "arton energy" into time travelers, which can basically be detected with a sort of temporal Geiger counter. So you can literally detect time travelers if they have significant traces of the energy in their bodies.

Conversely, in the TimeLords RPG back in the late 80s/early 90s, it was an explicit function of the time machine (a tiny hand-held lump shaped like a 20-sided die, but which used insanely advanced technology to pack a warehouse full of electronics down into its space, and which was sturdy enough to survive nuclear explosions and generate its own power supply for billions of years without need of repair or replacement) that it would irradiate anyone it transferred from one point in time/space/parallel universes to another and instantly kill off any and all infectious diseases which could cause a problem at the destination (because the original inventors of the time travel device ALSO thought of that possible complication). In the same way, the device also does a short-range scan of the arrival point, telepathically "reads" the language centers of any sentient beings it can detect, and then "imprints" that information directly into the time traveler, specifically so they can communicate with locals (this imprint fades over a period of weeks, or can be "overwritten" by future languages during the next jump).

Because when you're trying to tell a fun story about time travel and modern adventurers having fun times in the past, the last thing you want to do is overthink everything and have them unleashing deadly plagues or killing off entire societies in a day because of real world science).

Which is also the same reason why most time machines don't fling you 20 miles into space for every second you move through time, which would be the realistic result of traveling through time and not space, because the planet is rocketing through space at ridiculous speeds, and won't BE wherever it is you arrive WHEN you arrive. Unless the time machine in question is so sophisticated that it can somehow compensate and move you through space as well as time. Or if it's magic.

Usually, the harder the sci-fi, the more likely it is to bring that up as a complication.

idk, I believe in the creed: "Not where, when." >_>

At any rate, kinda curious if any scifi has addressed that concept by only allowing the traveler to return to certain times in history when the planet is in perfect sync with the same location in the current time.

I would assume not, because anyone sophisticated enough to even know/care that it's an issue would also know that it's almost impossible for such perfect synchronization to EVER occur due to perturbations of orbit (it, the planet isn't making a exact perfect loop every time, but wobbles like hell and the loops gradually shift and warp slightly over time).

But maybe someone has. I haven't read EVERY time travel story ever written.

(Some stories DO use the concept of their being specific "time windows" that limit travel to only certain times and places, but I don't think I've ever heard it explicitly explained as a function of the planet needing to be in the same place it originally was as much as it's usually just handwaved away as a quirk of time travel that it would take too much science to explain, and is mainly only there for narrative reasons.)
