I am not a fun person to be married to (not really a great person to be in a relationship with either). I have never had a "roommate" in my 35 years of life and I have an obsessive throw out anything I haven't used in over a year. I doubt a woman would want to put up with having to "train" me to live with anyone, let alone them specifically.

Plus I like having the freedom to come and go as I please (or stay home for a week straight).

Imho, mariage itself is nothing but useless fluff. A couple can live happily together without going trough all the trouble of marrying. In my case, I would only do that if my partner really wanted to, and even then, it would take quite a while to save enough money for it.

His point was likely that you can get married without having a massive wedding that costs a ton of money. Whether you just have a small ceremony with a relatively cheap small reception, scaling all the way down to just getting married in front of a Justice of the Peace or in a Vegas drive-in chapel or whatever.

Though it is often a very hard sell with most women to suggest getting married without a major ceremony. As is gettting engaged/married without dropping a significant investment on a ring, because the diamond industry has brainwashed people into thinking that's the only acceptable way to show affection, and you're a horrible loveless monster if you don't.

No. I dont agree. Ive seen so many shitty households where the parents stayed together for the children. It did not make them, nor their children happy in the slightest.

Sounds like those people have poor decision making skills then. If you're not ready to have kids then don't fuck, or else you might just ruin your life. Do the words "mom" and "dad" have any meaning anymore? It's an honorable title, but we now have people who reluctantly call themselves that. They've made their bed, let them sleep in it.

But if you want to focus so strongly on the word "need", then there's literally no reason to get married, ever.

You can easily provide a stable environment to raise children outside of marriage (and many people do). In fact, there have been multiple times in history when marriage wasn't even that important outside of dynastic alliances involving large-scale property possession - and that's not even necessary at this point because contract law is a thing that exists.

Someone could argue that marriage can lead to valuable financial benefits or couple/familial rights, but those are flaws that exist in a society that already over-emphasizes marriage as a desirable thing, and could easily be changed to remove them (again, contract law is a very useful thing).

We could easily outlaw marriage tomorrow and life would continue very much the same as it's ever been. We don't get married because we NEED to. We get married because we WANT to. And plenty of people WANT to get married in spite of having no interest in ever having kids, for whatever reasons they might justify it with.

(And in some cases, WE don't get married at all, because we consider the entire institution to be something of a farce at this point.)

Youre also utterly wrong about only child bearing couples needing to get married. There is a myriad of reasons to be married even if you dont intend to have child. Taxes, legal reasons, not being barred from their hotel room because youre not married. Many many reasons to be married.

1) Taxes are negligible, and not really a reason, more an incentive.

2) Legal reasons only mean presumed claims on eachother's property, which you can have without marriage.

3) America is a third world country, their barbaric, theocratic methods are inappropriate for basing decisions off.

The problem is, for some people, what you consider a negligible incentive may be the most important thing ever. In precisely the same way that I don't give a single shit about abortion or identity politics, but there are people who will base their entire vote on future Presidents solely on where they stand on those issues.

Yeah, it's nice in theory, but never seems to work in practice. Even my hippy friends wound up getting an expensive engagement ring and had large ceremony (although it was at a cheaper venue). The *only* people I know who actually had a cheap wedding was a couple who eloped and didn't tell anybody that they were married for like 5 years which was done partly because one needed to get on the other's medical plan and supposedly they hadn't told their family or anybody else because they had wanted to do a proper wedding eventually.
