We got a new guy at my job. And he is big into bigfoot. I wouldn't say I'm big into bigfoot exactly. But I do like learning about Cryptids. How about you guys? Do you like cryptids? Are they any that you think may be real? How so you feel about them in general?

Indifferent. As a kid I was really into that stuff along with the paranormal. I had countless books and did tons of research on that stuff. Anyway, cryptids especially large ones don't exist.

Cryptids I can enjoy, a few have actually turned out to be real.

The problem I have with Bigfoot/Sasquatch is that by now you'd think at least one would have turned up in the fossil record at this point if there's still an active breeding population. A hunter or a trapper would have caught one by now, or at the very least we'd have skeletal remains of one.

This isn't like that dwarf branch of mankind they recently found in a cave that went extinct something like 20k years ago, this is supposedly an active, living creature in the forest in modern times. We're not talking about a microorganism, or an insect the size of a thumbtack, this is a 6 to 8 foot tall hominid we're looking for. Skull half the size of a human torso.

I like cryptids, but most of the cool ones are implausible. While it's possible that some of the really remote ones like the yeti and mongolian death worm *might* exist, it's still a stretch.

I like them. And I do wish for the existence of some. But it is true that most of the larger ones may not exist. Though, like Zeus said, some of the ones that live in remote areas do have a higher possibility of existing, due to being in a remote area with very little "traffic". Though, the ones that live in the ocean also have a high possibility. There's still so much down there that we know very little about...

I don't think those are considered cryptids. Cryptids usually have some basis in reality. Maybe they were based on cryptids but they are purely fictional creatures, like Black Eyed Kids.

Cryptids are not interesting at all to me. Once we discover them they cease to be cryptids, right?

I think his basis was in urban legend. not creepy pasta. i've seen several of the old photographs he was supposedly present in. just a poor quality picture where someone in the background you couldn't make out any details of their face and they happened to be wearing a suit.

Those aren't cryptids. A cryptid is something like bigfoot that are legendary/mythical. They also never even proved that the sea monsters were giant squids even though they are most likely.

I understand what a cryptid is. But these are also animals that were most likely cryptids a long time ago. Sure, we know what these animals are now. But a long time ago, before they were discovered, they were probably a sort of cryptid to early explorers. Once a cryptid is discovered, it's changed from a cryptid to another classification. If we discover a cryptid in our time, for us, it will be a cryptid being discovered. But for future generations, it will just be another animal. We could discover some kind of animal, and future generations could say the same thing about whatever animal we discover...

The thing is if it's a really small population, you probably aren't going to find much of a record. The only reason we have fossils for other creatures is because there was a very large population and some of them wound up stumbled into material which preserved their remains. An actual body can be dismembered pretty quickly by forest life, which is why we don't stumble on intact deer bodies or skeletons all the time.

iirc, it's not that giant squid were believed to be sea monsters, but that the giant squid was itself a cryptid at one point because its existence was in question
