True for me. I find it much harder to get into new music, or enjoy new artists. I was introduced to bands like Coldplay and System of a Down at that time. I just turned 30, and they are still some of my favorite bands ever.

I'm suspecting its mostly going to be true for everybody. Let's find out. I'm also gonna make this poll at the two main music boards in the special interest section, to get a bigger and more diverse set of results.

If you pick true, talk about which artists/bands/musical genres made the biggest impact on you as a teen.

If you pick false, talk about when you figured out what you do and don't like when it comes to music.

Otherwise, talk about which of the other choices apply to you, if any apply at all.

I still discover a lot of new stuff to listen to at 27, but it usually is within veins of interest that I built as a teenager, yes. I did the heaviest amount of exploration through music when I was 18/19, and those bands I discovered definitely remained my favourites (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Secret Chiefs 3, Tera Melos, System of a Down at 16). That being said, some of my biggest interests are fairly recent (Kool Keith, QOTSA, Freddie Gibbs, Amy Winehouse), so I would say I'm a fairly open person. Although, I never really did get into anything like House, EDM or Techno. I can enjoy it from an outside perspective, but I really don't care about going to a show.

Last option for me. I'm in my late 20s now, but sometimes I'll re-listen to stuff I newly discovered only a couple years ago and go "Why the hell did I think this was good?".

As a teen (and even into my early 20s tbh) I was one of those "classic rock is the only good music" dorks. Now I feel like pretty much 90% of it is shit. My tastes still change now but I get less caught up in the idea of "Well lots of people like this so I should like it" which I did listening to classic rock as a teen.

Nah, my taste has constantly evolved. Early high school I mostly liked alternative rock, classic rock and metal. Then in my last 2 years of high school I got a lot into jazz, experimental music, indie rock/indie pop and hip hop stuff, and then over the past 5 years since high school its been a lot more electronic / art pop / ambient music that I have been listening to. And then particularly in the past two years or so I have finally embraced more general pop that I would have scoffed at when I was in high school.

For the most part though I still listen to most everything I have liked since I was 16-17, so I guess my taste first developed into what it is now then. As I hate a lot of the alternative rock I liked when I was 13-15, and while I still like classic rock and metal, it just doesn't interest me anymore and I never listen to it outside of a select few artists.

I gravitate mostly toward metal, which I started listening to as a teen, but I'm very open to new music. Within the past three years I've grown fond of country music from the 50s-70s. And only recently discovered "lo-fi" (not even sure that's the correct genre) and I'm enjoying the one artist and album I've heard so far.

I'd say my taste in music is still developing/evolving.

Depends how you define it.

I discovered my love of heavy metal and electronic music when I was a pre-teen and those haven't changed, but I didn't discover my favourite band (Rammstein) until I was 20 (and my favourite bands from my teenage years are ones I barely listen to these days). My musical tastes also expanded greatly in my adult years - I even wound up getting into big band and swing music (and it was absolutely wonderful when electroswing became a thing).

Yeah kinda. Besides the basic crap on the radio I used to record some NES music. Then I came across a Metallica cassette which turned me onto what I listen to today. I've expanded just a little to include chiptunes or what people have been calling pop metal. Really the thing that did it was the internet. I didn't have any real exposure to that kind of music until I was able to DL clips from foreign bands like Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, or Sonata Arctica.

My musical preferences developed earlier/later

Why is this even an option? If you picked this, then your actual answer is "false" isn't it?

With the nitpick out of the way. Considering I don't listen the type of music I listened to when I was a teen, it's safe to say my answer is false.

Oh, and one more nitpick, in your OP you should have linked to the other places you posted this poll for anyone interested in seeing those results as well.

I am weird because I don't like music at all. I just never did care for it. It always amuses me when people first find that out about me. They're always like, "How can you not like music?" I'm just like, "I just don't."

I am not sure if the reason why might have something to do with growing up in a very religious family and all my parents ever listened to was southern gospel. I don't know if that was part of the reason for my dislike in music, but I just never did develop a taste for any music at all.

It's an evolving process. I first discovered liking music early in elementary school, and quickly realized that I preferred alternative rock to most everything else. A lot of stuff I was introduced to from my dad, like new wave and Bob Marley. In the early part of high school I discovered pot, and then shortly after Sublime and Radiohead... go figure. I listened to a lot of classic rock then. Late hs into college I learned to appreciate more hip hop.

Then post college I spent a few years trying to find bands or artists that excited me like when I first found my favorites, failed miserably, got tired of the same old crap I always liked, and now I'm in my 30s and I hate most music including the music I do like, if that makes sense.

So to answer your question.... no

Other than first seeing a local production of Phantom and then on Broadway (by the way, it's the longest running show on Broadway although... if you were to see just one Broadway show ever, go for Hamilton), not really, no. A lot of the stuff I like I started with earlier (Disney songs) or later (show tunes), with some stuff in between (like jazz because, you know, college). Granted, to some extent I probably liked at least *some* show tunes from my teens or earlier, but it wasn't until Hamilton came out that I really got into show tunes again. Prior to that, wasn't really listening to any music at all.

I would say yes. When I was a teen and had a myspace page, I would visit friend's pages. That's how I found my favorite band and song. I use to just pause the music instantly, but didn't one time(I even remember who's page it was). And really liked the song. Then I listened to more songs by them and liked the band. They are still my favorite band to this day. After that, I started listening to music. And started listening to the music on friend's pages. And started buy CDs. And it's been about the same since then. Obviously, I still find new music. Whether its the same genre or not. But I do think my preferences mostly formed as a teenager...

Tori Amos

Sarah McLachlan
They Might Be Giants

and I already had a number of albums by each of them by the time I moved out of being a teenager. Maybe Sarah McLachlan came just a little later.

True or False: Your taste in music was formed when you were a teenager

True. In my teens I only bothered listening to the radio and thus most of my preference was pop music. I still enjoyed the odd nu mental song that appeared in the UK charts though from the likes of Linkin Park, Slipknot and so on. It wasn't until I left school at the age of 16 that I got more into nu metal though. I borrowed Slipknots Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) album from a guy I met on this media course I did at the age of 17. Since then I've not looked back and my preference is nu metal although I still like other genres of music due to what I grown up with.

Huh, seems Rock love happens as a teenager (definitely did for me and most of those people).

While rap seems to be either before or after the teen years which seems a little weird, but I guess it's a lot simpler than rock, so it is probably easier to get into it when you are younger, but it is still a good genre (with a lot of shit that gets more popular than the good stuff) so once you start trying to expand your musical taste more (which is usually after you stop being a shitty teenager) it becomes easy to get into, or at least that would be my guess, I could be wrong

I knew in high school that I liked punk music, but its constantly been evolving and at the time I never realized how deep and diverse the music is.

I didnt really listen to music before high school. In high school I developed a preference for punk, but radio friendly bands like the offspring and sum41. Then it evolved into liking bands like NOFX and Bad Religion...then a little bit later it evolved into liking bands like minor threat and bad brains, then bands like husker du and the replacements...then this led me down various punk subgenres such as emo, post hardcore, post rock, powerviolence, and some others to where we are now.

So it has constantly been evolving but yeah, the original seed to now having over 5,000 tracks on my computer mostly in the punk and related subgenres was actually the offspring. They actually are a band i'll still listen to once in a blue moon.
