Backstory: both my parents were adopted. I did a DNA test with ancestry and so did my dad and that way I could figure out my mom's family too. I messaged the closest match that was listed as a cousin. Turned out to be my uncle

He told me that was the best she was waiting for his whole life. We're going to talk on the phone tonight. I'm super excited and nervous

He looks and smiles like my mom. It's so surreal. I only got my results a week ago!

Both your parents are adopted? That sounds unlikely but maybe that's what brought them together hmm

That they are

It is unlikely and so I've never met my extended biological family. Just my parents.

Firewood18 posted...

No he just wants to meet his family too

He did the DNA testing in the hopes a family member would be matched

That's great news, I suppose. I'm assuming he was also adopted so you aren't gaining more family with him (well, unless he has kids)?

Kinda wonder how common that is, especially in regards to whether it's a preference.

Which is a kinda neat perk for the technology, since in bygone eras it'd be a lot harder to track people down (well, I guess back then it might have been more common for a worker at an adoption center to walk out of the room for a minute)

I don't think that was the case for my parents. I don't even know if they each knew that about each other before my mom got knocked up

He wasn't adopted. My mom was the first born and given up for adoption and the rest stayed. He has 2 other siblings aside from my mom, and I've got cousins.

It's a bit odd being the middle man for my mom and her brother

But they're both really happy and I can't imagine how hard it would be to reach out to a sibling vs a niece or uncle, it's good to help

If you're looking for family do a DNA test

Both my father and my mother have found their siblings (and family) using ancestry in the last year. Though my mom found her brother by proxy from my test. I could rule out the paternal matches since my father did a test.

Both my parents exhausted all other avenues and this worked quickly. I'm really grateful for this technology. Can hardly believe it.

The story of my dad finding his brother is even more crazy but I'm tired maybe tomorrow

It turned out my grandma had my mom when she was only 13 (and was pregnant at 12), and the birth records were fudged to prevent the father from going to jail. Jeez. No wonder that paperwork was a dead end. The papers sometimes just lie.

My mom is going to meet her siblings tomorrow!

Why don't you do it? Since you're still looking for a job, it would be easier now since you probably have more time. Once you find a job, you might not have as much time.

I honestly wouldn't know where to start but thanks tot his topic a DNA test probably would be the best place. Those cost money though so as I said maybe one day.

They're often on sale. Ask for one as a gift if you can. I had both of mine gifted.

Ancestry has a much larger user pool. Keep that in mind. I was on 23andme for almost 5 years without making a solid match. Ancestry got matches on both sides of the family right away. Ancestry also has bullshit like needing a paid account to message people. But you can find names!

Besides I don't even know if my mum is alive or dead as I've no contact with her. All I know is my half siblings from her side have been put in the system although now they are probably all adults so I don't think that actually matters much.

I know of one half brother from my dads side but he's older than me and strange enough I've not been that bothered about tracking him down. Mostly because my dad tried to get in contact with him at my nans funeral after talking to his mum. He apparently wants nothing todo with my dad and has no desire to keep in contact with me or my siblings otherwise he would have. That's fair enough to be honest.

Foxx, I'm so happy for you. I know what you must be feeling as I too was adopted. My Aunt adopted me from her sister at birth, but no one ever had the empathy to let me know who the father was. My adopted dad was such a good man to me it never really mattered. Just remember it's the people who raise you that matter not the sperm donors.
