He has since given a kind of tome deaf apology

There is a deep problem with WWE and women still being told to get implants on the main roster, but Dave is just too careless to know how to phrase it without it sounding like hes attacking the woman. And Alvarez is even less woke than Dave.

This is where someone like Satin could probably find the right angle of criticism where Dave just cant because of his entrenched outdated understanding of image issues

Yeah, I agree with this.

I thought it was obvious he was talking about implants though. He just doesn't really get how to use candor because I think he's just so used to robotically talking about wrestling without considering people and their feelings.

Although it's sad this got mired into his point he was attempting to make about WWE watering down every single good NXT act like the Iconics and making them just another group, because I think it's a decent discussion point.

I don't even really think they watered down the Iconics that much, as much as in WWE, nobody matters if they aren't Charlotte or Rousey, and it's very much presented that way

Carmella and Bliss are flat out being portrayed as "We're the champs but we actually suck compared to Charlotte and Rousey and are clearly just transitional" and anybody else, well... Good luck, they don't even get that

I think they absolutely watered the Iconics down to repetitive jokes and promos. At the very least, you have to admit that they aren't nearly as entertaining as they were in NXT. Most promos just go the same way with Peyton coming out and mocking this person and then Billie laughing and saying it's hilarious. That's good every so often but man. They run everything into the ground.

Carmella and Bliss are even worse because they still do that bad fakeout nice promo thing. And everyone involving them retaining their titles tends to be the most ridiculous nonsense that it's almost insulting that Asuka or Nia Jax loses to it.

Another major reason I've given up watching is that every time I like an NXT act, they get to the main roster and just bomb because they don't know what to do with them. Elias is the one guy I can think of in years that actually got a decent treatment on being called up.

Oh, I don't disagree with that

I just think it's a product of them not actually getting real time or any kind of story moreso than any actual watering down attempt

I feel like this was handled appropriately all around. Dave gave what seems to be a genuinely heartfelt apology without groveling.

At the same time, it IS, in fact, a completely reasonable thing for him to be talking about, given how directly success in this business is, in fact, tied to appearance. If you don't like that fact, take it up with the people who actually make those decisions (of which Meltz is not one)

Is it disdain though?

I guess my larger question here is, is it never appropriate to point out that a woman has gained weight, or become "less attractive" for some other reason?

I didn't get "disdain" there at all. And the relative qualifier of "less" to me implies that he's not even saying "she's ugly" or anything like that.

As a comparison, sometimes male athletes gain significant weight in the off-season, noticeable when they show up to training camp. The usual response in the media is to mock them and belittle them, while their coaches take great effort to ensure they lose it as quickly as possible. Would Jim Rome get in trouble for pointing out that Tom Brady showed up to camp a lot fatter than he used to be?

I tend to agree with Smuffin. It's not really done from a place of malice so it doesn't matter. I mean if it was about actual weight you'd wonder with Peyton Royce, but a guy who is saying a girl her size is fat would have had a lot more than one slip up. It wouldn't really be a "gotcha" moment.

I guess what I'm saying is the only time it's inappropriate to make that comment is when it doesn't make sense. If she actually had gained 50 lbs it would also be okay since image is an important part of wrestling and news relevant. Men get depushed for weight fluctuations and not fitting an image just as much as a woman would. It's a shallow business.

I disagree. If you're not in shape and you're in the business of wrestling it's being bad at an aspect of your job. It's not "body shaming" to acknowledge this. Like it's not saying "you need to be less fat to not be a terrible person" it's "you need to be less fat to be a success in wrestling." It's less body shaming and more laziness shaming in the case of a wrestler.

I don't want a bunch of Kevin Owenses on the roster. That's not what wrestling is. A big part of wrestling should be maintaining your body to help create the image of a larger than life character-- where to draw the line is important and I would argue that wrestling perhaps puts it a bit too deeply in at times, but it's definitely somewhere well before hitting a 180 lb Peyton Royce too.

That's because it was part of the character, or because they (like Kevin Owens) were so good in other aspects that they overcame it.

Peyton Royce gaining 50 lbs doesn't add anything to her character. If anything it weakens her character.

Let's frame this "body shaming" a different way-- let's make Ellsworth the World Heavyweight Champion after 6 months of build-- let's make him the second coming of Goldberg and get clean wins every week until then. Do you buy him as a credible champion? Is it "body shaming" to say the guy should be in better shape to be treated as a credible threat to beat guys like AJ Styles who actually look like athletes? How about if we did the same thing for Neville, who is the same height as Ellsworth and if he cared less about being in shape could very well look as jobbery as Ellsworth but is freaking shredded because he actually cares enough about being good at his job to stay in shape? I bet he's a lot easier to stomach, right?
