according to statistics, the FIRST system is the most popular nowadays...but let's see if that's true.

Kindergarten-6, 7-8, 9-12

That was the average. Though, some were different. Mainly, there were a couple of middle schools that did 6-8. I noticed you didn't have any overlapping grades...

The system here is nationwide...

Go to school at 4, normally you turn 12 in the 8th grade, during which you make the tests which decide to what level of secondary school you may go.

Then it goes haywire... MAVO/VMBO is 4 years, HAVO is 5 years, VWO is 6 years.

After which you can go to trade school or some level of college.

So other I suppose.

(Actually, depending whether "Kindergarten is akin to our "Kleuterschool" or "Peuterspeelzaal", means it is either part of primary education here, or falls before it...)

I had to translate. I guess it was Dutch. I think Kleuterschool is the same as Kindergarten. The rest, I would still have to look up to understand.

In that case, Kindergarten-8, is the only thing we all absolutely share here and are considered a singular package of primary schooling.

Starting with year 1 of secondary we are assigned schooling levels based on our knowledge/intelligence/performance levels.

How do they decide? Is it more years for the one that didn't do as well on their test because they may need more schooling? Or more for the ones doing better because they want to "Help them succeed" more(That sounds kind of bad the way I put it)? I figure the former, but just wanted to ask to clarify...

How do they decide?

The test I mentioned in the first post the "CITO toets", which is basically the only time we are graded in comparison to one another here, combined with the advice of the 8th grade teacher. The score and the advice combined allow us to apply for a level of secondary schooling.

Just different levels preparing for different kind of continuation schooling.

VMBO (used to be called MAVO) "lowest level, Preparatory Middle Trade Education
HAVO, "middle level", Higher General Continued Education
VWO, "highest level", Preparatory Scientific Education

The idea being that VMBO leads to trade school "MBO" ("Middle Trade Education") (learning a job the old fashioned way), HAVO leading to non-university college "HBO" ("Higher Trade Education") and VWO leading to University.

Sorry. I probably should have asked differently. I guess I meant more like how you answered the second question. Though I didn't know about the teacher advice, as well.

Kindergarten-7, 8-10, 11-12
Kindergarten-7, 8-9, 10-12
Kindergarten-8, 9-12
Kindergarten-12

Considering all the places I lived growing up, that's a little hard to say. However, I *thought* kindergarten was its own thing. Certainly where I lived at that age, I was at different schools for kindergarten and first. Otherwise, 1-5 was usually its own thing, 6-8 was another, and then 9-12.

Most places I've lived have had multiple elementary, middle, and high schools. However, some of the towns in my state are so small that they have one high school serving multiple towns. I kinda wonder if they break up their grades differently as a result or if those are also consolidated.

Then two years later a new high school opened until about the same distance from me, and my mom wanted to send me there. I told her no.

Sounds like a dick move on your mom's part. Why would she want to send you to the new one? Not really seeing the point.

When I started elementary school, it was Kindergarten-6- 7-9, 10-12 (or maybe 9th grade was still HS, wasn't really paying attention to beyond elementary back then...)

But by the time I got to 5th grade, they had switched to Kindergarten-5, 6-8, 9-12 and we were one of the first 6th grade class years to go to MS. Kinda wish they had left it the original way, considering how awful MS was. Handling it as a 9th grader would've been way better than as a 6th grader.
