It depends how you look at it.

I just showed you an article from Reuters talking about exactly what you are referring to how we are "losing". And how the Taliban has no power to occupy cities and their attacks are merely to make headlines and not to actually take land.

We are never going to lose the war here. We toppled their government. Sent them into hiding. We are getting to a crossroads where we have to decide if we care anymore to be there.

If two people are brawling on the street and one guy is beating the literal piss out of the one guy for 25 minutes straight and the guy getting the shit beat out of him doesn't quit so the guy beating his ass decides he already proved his point and leaves.

Who won?

The guy with a bloody mess of a face standing in the middle of the street at the end or the guy who decided he had enough of it and left without a mark on him?

I mean, we can indefinitely hold Afghanistan with our troops. But after 20 years almost... Do we even care to anymore?

Losing interest isn't losing.

Obviously the Taliban is evil and all that, but there are a lot of nations ruled by leaders who are similarly awful or even worse. What make Afghanistan so strategically important that the government has continued this war for so long despite the lack of any meaningful progress and not having any real plan to reach a better outcome?

Then after you decided you no longer were interested in the outcome of the country years later, the Taliban under new leadership takes control. (Which they likely do not have anywhere near the proper projection currently to even do so - thus hypothetical).

We are 15,000 troops. We likely are wherever they do not attack. They MAY MAY be able to take a city or two if we were to withdraw, but they cannot push inward to the main urban areas, which the capital now houses upwards of like 6 million people. And, they likely cannot hold any territory for prolonged periods. Just like in 2015 when they briefly held a city just to have it taken right back.

This is all in the article again that you continue to refuse to read which talks directly about what you are saying.

We could have. You could argue we are failing at world building in Afghanistan, but we undoubtedly destroyed the Taliban in a rousing success. The Taliban has zero means in which it can defeat our troops. The best they can do is hope we leave and that they might be able to defeat the new government, which is unlikely.

We never were under any pretense that we were invading Afghanistan to make it a better place.

The Taliban have not been destroyed. If our goal was to destroy the Taliban, we have failed.

I would say that our goal was to remove the Taliban from power; to send the world the message "if you allow anti-American terrorists to flourish in your country, then we will take your country away from you." Thus, we're winning when the Taliban lose power, and we're losing when they gain it. If we leave Afghanistan and the Taliban regains power, they won the war, and we lost it. The world will know that you can allow anti-American terrorists to flourish in your country and get away with it; the Americans are going to come and break a lot of your stuff, but if you wait long enough and keep fighting, then they'll give up before you do.

I mean, that phrasing is being pushed on her and not at all what she was actually going for. Closed door events happen all the time for the rich and wealthy via fundraisers, this was one intended only to make specific vulnerable constituents comfortable to come out and speak.

AOC hasn't at all defamed the press or pronounced them an enemy and this is only a couple of events while she is very much and has been very much open to the press outside of this.

I think AOC made a mistake but not one really worthy of the attention it got (which is to say virtually any.) As mentioned, this happens all the time - with the media not caring! hmmmm - with fundraisers that cost thousands to attend. I think a better balance she could have struck would be to kick out national press but let the local press still attend but whatever this is pretty much a nothing story to me.

Plus she's already reversed her decision and is letting the media attend these from now on IIRC.
