Elizabeth Warren is proposing a massive shift in how corporations would work. It's also probably one of the most progressive major proposals I've seen.

https://www.vox.com/2018/8/15/17683022/elizabeth-warren-accountable-capitalism-corporations

It's a long article that both examines key parts of her proposal as well as some background and context on the current state of how corporations and the stock market affect the economy both here and compared to other countries.

Key parts in Warren's proposal:

-Creation of an Office of United States Corporations inside the Department of Commerce.
-Require any corporation with revenue over $1 billion to obtain a federal charter of corporate citizenship. This charter tells them to consider not just the interests of shareholders but employees, customers, and the communities in which they do business.
-Corporations required to allow their workers to elect 40% of the membership of the board of directors
-All political activity must be approved by 75% of shareholders and 75% of the board members
-Limits on corporate executives' ability to sell shares they receive as pay by introducing wait periods before they can do so in certain situations

The part about codetermination (The requirement to have workers elect 40% of the board) ties in with that poll I linked a topic or two back showing a lot of support for the idea. (In fact, that poll is referenced and included as an image in this article) and is IMO the biggest part of the proposed bill. Warren is calling it the Accountable Capitalism Act, so we can have ACA2: ACA Harder.

Really like the proposal, sounds like a lot of great ideas to me.

sorry

forgot that we shut down all ideas during periods where we lack control of the government.

Obviously it can't go anywhere now (and likely until 2020 at the earliest) but this can allow it to enter the political discourse and grow support for the ideas in the plan among elected officials, candidates, and the public. As noted in both the article, and the polling I talked about earlier, these ideas are shown to be immensely popular with the general public. While the idea that the Democrats aren't running on ideas is already utterly false, this serves as yet another example of concrete policy that differentiates the parties.

While there are certainly politicians were I might question their motivations out of cynicism that they're just being opportunists proposing stuff at a time when they know it can't pass precisely for the sole purpose of political gain because they have no intention of actually pursuing that policy... Elizabeth Warren is at the complete opposite side of that spectrum.

Hmm, that sounds pretty good. Good luck getting other Democrats to support it though.

Also, not sure if requiring a federal charter to do business across state lines is constitutional. Sounds like a pretty big move into what has always been a matter of state law (corporate structure).

Also, the Contracts Clause bars Congress from interfering with existing contracts, which could apply to the Apple articles of incorporation.

Response from brennan:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/16/opinion/john-brennan-trump-russia-collusion-security-clearance.html

While I had deep insight into Russian activities during the 2016 election, I now am aware thanks to the reporting of an open and free press of many more of the highly suspicious dalliances of some American citizens with people affiliated with the Russian intelligence services.
...

The only questions that remain are whether the collusion that took place constituted criminally liable conspiracy, whether obstruction of justice occurred to cover up any collusion or conspiracy, and how many members of Trump Incorporated attempted to defraud the government by laundering and concealing the movement of money into their pockets.

Oh. I forget who it was that mentioned when the expected cost of $12 million came out that the actual cost would surely be higher because those estimates always come in low but... this is a bigger increase than I expected. +80 million to a new estimate of $92 million.

Also in the article, the parade as currently planned will feature tanks but they took a look at it and determined that it won't ruin the streets.

~~~
Also, unrelated but so I don't double post or anything, jury deliberations have begun in Manafort's case. Friendly reminder to all that this is only the first Manafort case and that there's a sequel scheduled for... next month IIRC.
Speaking of Fiscal Conservatism I would loke to spend a moment talking about the North Carolina GOP.
Apparently not content pushing for SIX constitutional amendments designed to take all power from the (Democratic) Governor Roy Moore, they have begun to excoriate him over his handling of the disastrous I77 Toll lane debacle. This project was initiated under Pat McCrory and was designed to be a privatized toll road owned and operated by a private company. Between the construction stalling and the idea of toll roads growing immensely unpopular the project has stalled out.
Gov Moore and the Transportation secretary came out and said that buying out the contract would cost far too much and that they plan to basically try to buy back a portion of the sold road land to build a "shoulder" lane where part of the toll road was supposed to go and if the company ever gets their crap together and builds a toll road it would be just a single lane.
Republicans have come out HOWLING about him not putting an end to the project despite it costing like 900 million to do so
