Yeah Virion's probably got some of the best supports in the series for actually adding depth to the character. In some ways it upsets me that so much of it is isolated to support conversations-- he really is the type of character where you could justify putting some of that stuff in the main plot without compromising anything if they would ever give screentime to more than 20% of the cast.

Also Kent x Fiora best Kent pairing (and best Fiora pairing) imo.

63. Nephenee (9/10)

In retrospect, Neph feels like the start of all the waifu shit, but she's still cool. Just a down to Earth country chick, real girl next door type, also she has teal hair in Heroes at least, it's greener than I remembered in FE9/10 and will fucking impale you. Tellius has some great armor designs and Nephenee definitely earns points for that too, her armor is hella cool. Uh, lack of pants aside. You only see her from waist-up in game, usually.

62. Anna

When someone asks who the richest person in your squad is and you know the answer but don't want to brag:

Appearing in almost every game, Anna runs the secret shop and is the one who discovered the Outrealm Gates, which means she's indirectly to blame for Fire Emblem Fates. Like a good little capitalist, Anna's first thought was to commodify the Gates by recruiting her parallel universe "sisters" to universe-hop, grab all the best gear from across the multiverse, and sell it to the various protagonists they meet. This is all almost canon, I swear.

Anna is weird and cool, but she's more a running gag/plot device than a full-fledged character, even in games where she's a... full-fledged character.

61. Brady (Awakening)

Anytime a healer is something different from the "unblemished beacon of goodness" stereotype it's a hell of a lot more interesting, but FE rarely plays its healers like that. Brady's a rather interesting exception since he actually IS basically a saint, he just looks scary and talks roughly. It contrasts nicely with how prim and proper Maribelle is.

60. Cormag (8)

Oh, here's a character who would have been higher when I was younger. I was in love with all the wyvern characters in FE8 for whatever reason. Aside from his in-game portrait looking slightly like King K Rool as a human, Cormag's mostly interesting for his quest for revenge against Valter, which leads him to join up with the twins. I like Joshua's feud with Caellach more, but Cormag's has a decent payoff too.

59. Gregor (Awakening)

Gregor is a bizarrely random character for a game like Awakening with a small, mostly core, cast. He just sort of shows up trying to protect Nowi and never leaves. He's also an old Russian mercenary who is unflinchingly nice despite his appearance and profession and that's basically the best design for a character in Awakening, or possibly ever.

58. Saber (Echoes)

I lowkey love Saber and I'm thrilled he got a huge role in Echoes, but I'm also kinda sad they made him a wise mentor figure in addition to being a useless drunk when originally he was just the latter. Now he's basically Haymitch from the Hunger Games. I liked it more when the implication of his recruitment was:

Town: You need an adult to use a boat.
Celica: Fine, I'll get one. *under her breath* gon be the drunkest one i can find tho

57. Marcus (6/7)

One of the rare 6/7 characters (though Marcus is definitely a bigger presence in 7)! Marcus is hella broken in FE7, mainly because he has 8 move and Handaxes, though he's not quite as OP as people think these days. That pendulum swung a bit too far the other way! Turn back.

Also for all the talk people have about Marcus being able to solo endgame with 0% growths or whatever, he sure as SHIT cannot kill the FUCKING boss of the chapter where Raven and Lucius join, I swear he botched that shit like 47 times for me during a low turn count run that was like seven FUCKING years ago and I'm STILL BITTER, MARCUS.

56. Robin (Awakening)

As much shit as I give the avatar system in general, they did it pretty well with Robin. Like... I accept this person as a proxy for me in the FE universe, mainly because everyone loves them and instantly trusts them and they're a brilliant tactician who's good at everything. This is 100% my actual worldview and not a joke in any way.

Robin's also a pretty cool character in Smash. Try her out!

55. Gerik (8)

Board 8 likes to nominate mercenaries, huh.

Gerik is the coolest of the Ogmas knockoffs (unless you count Ike as one) mainly for the company he keeps. Imagine Gerik talking to other guys at MercenaryCon and they're like "I got a hunnerd men, ugly bastards, the lot of 'em, and strong as mules!" and Gerik's just over there going "my group is a pink-haired sword chick and a belly dancer, and i don't even know where the former is". I know his group's actually bigger than that, but I like to imagine it's literally just him and two women who have the hots for him.

54. Sain (7)

Sain has aged kinda poorly for the #MeToo era, but frankly he still holds up as well as Inigo does. He's a good guy, mostly, when he isn't hitting on Florina seconds after meeting her, leave her alone, Sain. He's also the ACTUAL most OP unit in FE7 because it's ridiculously easy to make him Marcus But Better and then he still Has Growths on top of that. Sain is very good and I think it's super weird he can't support Lyn when Kent can.

53. Owain (Awakening/Fates)

This is about as silly as you can make a character in FE without me starting to dislike them, I think. Owain is just a stupid weeaboo fuck, but it's framed more as him being an in-universe mythology/folklore nerd. It kind of works? It's just dumb enough for me to accept within the context of Awakening.

Not in Fates though. Owain's idiocy really comes off as tone deaf when set against the backdrop of Nohr. His Odin Dark persona is amazing though. Severa and Inigo were clearly like, "okay, we'll just change our names and be good to go" then Owain shows up with 30 pages of backstory.

52. Reinhardt (5/Heroes)

Reinhardt is the main character of Fire Emblem Heroes, where he's infamous for his ability to kill anything anywhere on any map with about 4 exceptions. A solid year of updates were devoted to making Reinhardt less dominant, and it... kind of worked? He's still really really good. Having a horse and a brave tome will do that.

In FE5, Reinhardt is Ishtar's bodyguard who has a reputation for being basically perfect. As the game goes on, Reinhardt proves to be a perfect knight but a moral coward; he ultimately ends up crushed between his conscience and his fear (though you can spare his life technically). He's basically Xander but the game is self-aware. He's also 100% going to be recruitable if FE5 is ever remade.

51. Felicia (Fates)

Felicia is 100% anime trash but she's kinda charming? I can buy "clumsy sweetheart" as a personality rather than just a gimmick. It's kinda amusing too that it's specifically domestic shit that Felicia is a hot mess at, she can kill people just fine, no problems there. Felicia is mainly held back by not being allowed to contribute to the plot basically ever, and also by Fates' writing being bad.

Flora was way better and had the backstory/motivation that could have actually improved Felicia too but it's basically only relevant for one chapter and then everyone forgets it ever happened. Flora is actually one of the bigger victims of Fates' writing IMO. Had one of the more compelling stories both as a character and for the story to explore but nope, it's turned into a single chapter story and forgotten.

50. Maribelle (Awakening)

I secretly love the "asshole noblewoman" trope (two anime trash in a row, that's a paddlin') and Maribelle is a very VERY good example of it. She's a healer on a horse which is always useful, and she has a surprising amount of depth revealed through her supports, which are some of the more memorable in the game -- particularly her history with Gaius, friendship gay longing with Lissa, and attempt to use slang. Maribelle's all luvverly-jubberly with me!

49. Pent (7)

100% Certified Staffbot. Pent shows up and immediately puts all your other magic users to shame. Need someone to toss a Physic at Zephiel when he leaves his defensive position to chug an Elixir in the open? Pent's your man. Need someone to rip through hordes of enemies? Pent's your man. Need someone to warp Hector directly to Kishuna in Value of Life? Pent's, uh, probably not your man, not without a few levels first. sorry xp.

48. Serra (7)

Sarah might be the best Cleric/Priest in the series? Mist is her only real competition and Sierra might still win that. She's probably the funniest character in FE7 too, though with that said, the rest of the cast is really not entertained by her nonsense. Unlike L'Arachel, Serra experiences Actual Consequences for being lost in her own world all the time, in a way that's actually fairly realistic and compelling.

47. Celica (Echoes)

Celica might be the hardest character to rate because she gets hit hard by Echoes' final act deciding that no woman is allowed to accomplish anything useful (or, in some cases, do anything at all). Other than that, I like Celica a lot! She has a great design and I love her silly, sensitive side that other lords are implied to have but with Celica we actually get to see it (mostly when there's a cat around).

46. Jaffar (7)

Heyo, it's everyone's favorite FE7 character back when they were 13. Certainly mine! Jaffar is very cool and fits FE7's theme of letting your party redeem (or at least recruit) some real monsters. The Jaffar/Nino/Black Fang subplot of FE7 is its most memorable plotline, for good reason -- a lot of that reason being Jaffar's slow transformation from emotionless killbot to caring young man due to Nino's influence.

Next up:
-A character that can use almost every weapon!
-A character whose child is playable in FE6!
-What was his job again? The janitor?
-Use this character to evolve Clefairy I guess
-Everyone's favorite FE mechanic: reinforcements!

I don't like Flora but that's mostly because of what she represents with regard to Fates itself, which is unfair but *shrug*. But yeah the whole Ice Tribe (really anywhere outside of Nohr and Hoshido) was a missed opportunity and no one got it worse than Flora.

In a sense they were constrained by FE2's plot but they also made it kinda worse in some ways? IMO they should have just ditched that whole "Celica needs rescuing" plotline and let her take out Jedah before Alm shows up to join her against Duma.

45. Leif (4/5)

Leif is one of the most interesting main characters in the series -- and like Eliwood and Hector, he started as a side character. Leif is the ultimate Est of FE4: he joins as a weak, slow, infantry swordsman but his promotion gives him a horse and an A rank in almost every weapon type. He's part of the Thracia plotline of FE4, which, if you haven't realized this yet, is literally just Fates condensed to like 3 chapters and interesting.

Leif shines more as a character in FE5. He's kind of bad as a character, but he's more for utility and it works for FE5's story. I love the idea that Leif can't promote in FE5 because it would break canon with FE4. He also has a great conversation with Sety where he's talking about how he's not strong enough to be a crusader, blah blah blah low self-esteem. And Sety is just like "you're the youngest of us, you've had the worst life, and you've been fighting the longest, what the hell are you feeling inferior for" which is actually just calling out all the people who talk shit about my boy Leif.

44. Hawkeye (7)

Hawkeye is the best prepromo in FE7 and let me tell you why: he shows up at EXACTLY the moment that the game decides "okay, we're done with fuck-wretched knights, it's time for magicians and wyverns" and he comes in as a Berserker with high RES (???) and enough Str/Spd/crit chance to gib mages and chip through wyverns. And a unique sprite! Hawkeye is amazing. He's never not useful for me in FE7. Wish I could say the same about his daughter in FE6, but she's not even as interesting as a character.

43. Legault (7)

NOT the best thief in FE7 but we're getting there! Of all the Fangs, Legault probably had the best head on his shoulders, which is why he bailed pretty much as soon as Eliwood pointed an actual fucking army at his little vigilante group.

How Legault was expected to be the Fangs' "Cleaner" and take out traitors when he's a thief with miserable stats is anyone's guess. Really he would have made a lot more sense as an assassin like Jaffar, but eh. More importantly he has GREAT supports where he does such things as flirt with Heath and dote on Nino.

42. Valter (8)

Why is Valter this high? I dunno, there's something compelling about a guy who's just a murderous slimeball on a big flying snake. I love that Valter just straight up team-kills Glen for literally no reason other than that he doesn't like the guy, and his whole reason for being a Grado general is just to prolong the war so he can fight more. He contrasts a bit with both Ephraim and Eirika, but ultimately I like to think he gets taken out by Cormag.

41. Tanith (9/10)

Tanith might be my pick for single most underrated FE character. Even I forget how cool she is. Tanith is like the pegasus knight equivalent of the TA who grades harsher than the professor and Marcia is so fuckin' scared of her, it's great.

Tanith is also really cool because she's a Falcon Knight prepromo that isn't garbage and even has a completely unique ability! Twice per chapter, Tanith can summon 1 Falcon Knight and 2 Pegasus Knights as semi-controllable allied reinforcements. It is very important, though, to remember to never do this on a chapter with ballistae, because the NPCs will often be targeted over your own units and one-shot. And that's bad. Very, very... bad.

Yeah Hawkeye's mostly gameplay. He's a cool character too, but just being buff and quiet doesn't exactly break the wheel.

I've drawn 2, possibly 3, 5* Hawkeyes in Heroes and despite liking him... he has Death Blow 3, so...
