Board 8 > What difficulty do you usually play your games on?

Kind of curious where the board is at on this. Personally, I enjoy games the most when I'm overcoming the best they have to throw at me, plus taking on that challenge can take some games to a really awesome place they might not have reached otherwise.

I feel like Tales is a great example here - with most of the titles you can play on normal and just blitz the game and have a fun time, but those games have surprisingly deep combat and the higher difficulty is there for you if you want to dive head first into those systems.

That being said, I'll pretty much always opt to play a game on the highest difficulty - unless it's something silly like a shooter that just makes the enemies more bullet spongy as you hike the difficulty. That kind of thing is poor design IMO and doesn't really add anything meaningful to the game.

Depends on the game but I'm never satisfied with a game until I'm playing it on at least what passes for "hard"

On a first playthrough I pretty much never touch the absolute highest difficulty unless there are only two options. Otherwise I'll take whatever is second from the highest.

Depends on the game. Typically the hardest setting. However some games have cheap A.I. so for those I'll knock it down a notch.

Normal for like 95+% of all games that I play
Easy for RPGs since I detest grinding and having my time wasted
Hard for franchises that I am very familiar with and like the challenge (Halo, Hitman, etc...)

Depends on what kind of game it is, how much time I think I want to invest it in, and if there are achievements I think I can get. If it's an rpg or more story based, usually the toughest. If it's an action game, usually hard.

If it's a rhythm, strategy, or turnbased? Normal unless I'm familiar.

If I find the combat unengaging and I think it could be better with some more challenge, I'll bump it up. If I've given up on the combat being fun and just want the story, I'll bump it down. Thankfully, most games that fall into these categories let you change the difficulty whenever you want now.

Start normal unless it's a franchise I'm confident enough in to start harder like smash and kingdom hearts or bioshock or uncharted or Halo or...

Since Easy is boring, I play on Normal or Hard, depending on how much experience I have with the game/series. That said, I'll lower the difficulty in certain RPGs if I feel like I'm grinding all the time.

generally easy if it's my first time playing a game in a new series because I don't want to feel like I wasted time if I end up not liking it.

One level over the easiest difficulty, as a general rule of thumb (unless it's a series I'm already pretty familiar with)

Tend to care more about things like story and experience than difficulty. Don't mind feeling overpowered from time to time

I'm generally going to be a completionist and probably do stuff relatively early rather than waiting for it to get easier. If a game is good enough, I'll play harder modes. These have been some of my favorite gaming experiences.

If I want difficulty I'll just play competitive multiplayer games. Which is what I typically do anyway.

Depends on the game, but Normal usually if I don't have experience with the game or anything like the game. For Tales games I usually play on the second highest difficulty available, whether that's hard, chaos, maniac... iunno the one that isn't straight the hardest.

I have no shame- i always want to play on the easiest setting that doesn't feel infantile. That usually ends up being normal

Normal usually ends up being challenging enough towards the latter end anyway

Normal is my go to. I'll play hard and such on replays or if there's a trophy for it.

Usually the hardest possible unless thats some sort of challenge mode (like one saves that erase themselves) or specially designed for experienced runs (icewind dale had one of these settings).

i used to play on hardest difficulties but i guess i've lost my stuff because i usually just play on easier difficulties. id rather just play through the game and have a good time than have to continuously retry over and over

unless its dark souls of course

i prefer my serious gameplay to be in multiplayer games like overwatch, pubg, dota etc
