Article 13 means that we(normal people) can't upload anything whether it's a video on YouTube or an image on imgur without the file going through a filter to check if the file in question has a license attached to it in order for us to be allowed to upload it.

Which will become irrelevant as soon as some "sharing" site creates some sort of encrypted uploader.

So this was happening while John Oliver and NPR were busy running another few hatchet jobs on Trump? tbh, the collective media outlets use Trump as a distraction so they can not cover the dark shit happening across the world. (Of course, if Trump gave a shit, all he'd have to do is tweet about it and the media would be forced to acknowledge it.)

Life before the Internet was so much better.

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

There is an argument to be made that the worst thing that ever happened to humans was the Agricultural Revolution. It's immediate impact resulted in lowered life expectancy and increased daily labor time, and one of its long-term results was the domestication of multiple animal species - and the transfer of dozens of diseases from animals to humans.

In the even longer term, it paved the way for theft, war, oppression, overpopulation, pollution, and over-exploitation of resources.

Worst of all, for all of our assumptions that life is better now, we can't even say that we're arguably happier as a species than we were before "civilization" was a thing.

The alternative, of course, is barely living past 30, then getting eaten by a bear or something.

Whether or not you agree with the implications, it's pretty well established that the concept of private property and personal possessions mostly stemmed from social changes rooted in the adoption of a stationary lifestyle. Purely nomadic hunter-gatherers tend to keep communal property (which means there's nothing to steal), and because they were constantly on the move they would rarely fight over land or resources (no war).

Most social stratification also stems from property ownership - you can't have conflict between the haves and the have nots if everyone shares everything, and no one can afford to hoard more than they can easily carry from place to place. Also, in a tribal group where everyone is expected to pull their own weight, you don't really have gender inequality (patriarchal societies didn't really come into being until settlements made pure physical strength and military might a positive trait).

So yes, like it or not, most of what we consider the evils of modern humanity all trace back to the point where we decided to stop moving and start building. The question of whether or not all the positives we got in exchange outweigh the negatives is an entirely different question, but there really isn't a debate over how those concepts came into being in the first place.

Questionmarktarius posted...
The alternative, of course, is barely living past 30, then getting eaten by a bear or something.

Higher infant mortality rates pulling down the average aside, individuals in hunter-gatherer societies can easily live into their 60s.

But the real question is a matter of quality of life. Which is better - 30 great years, or 70+ years of slowly creeping stress and existential dread?

Keep in mind, I'm not saying life was absolutely better 10,000 years ago. But I AM saying that a lot of the things we currently accept make our lives worse didn't exist before agriculture and settlements came into being.
