It was mostly well-acted and had decent editing and visuals but the production hiccups are pretty evident through minor pacing issues and scenes feeling incomplete. Not the total disaster it was expected to be but it doesnt really add much to the franchise.

I can not judge Rogue one as it's just so out of place for me.

If I watched it before Episode IV (or right after), I would probably have a different view of it.

As it was, I enjoyed it, but, it didn't really work for me either. I have not watched it again though, so still need to give it another shot.

I'd put it over Episode I and II probably, not sure if I'd put it over III or VI.

Loved the start of VI but not the second half, so that makes it hard.

Also, can't really figure out my place for the VII and VIII yet. Know I don't like em as much as IV and V though.

Think my favorite is still V followed by IV and even with the ewoks, VI is still up there (probably over III at least).

The original trilogy....just was magical, nothing has really compared for me, but then I was much younger when it came out, less jaded, and the genre was brand new on film at least.

Still would WAAAAY rather have seen Timothy Zhans Thrawn books made into movies then Episode I-III and VII and VIII. Could have gone straight up from VI to IX with the thrawn books and THEN done a prequel series (but better).

I'll give it a 8-9. Honestly I am not sure what would be a 10 though. I really enjoyed it, about as much as with Rogue One, and look forward to more of these side movies. To some degree I feel it runs parallel with the Han Solo Trilogy books.

It's what you expect.

They take throwaway lines from past movies and turn them into scenes.

You know 100% nothing is going to happen to Chewie and Han and everybody else is either going to betray Han or die because they don't exist in the future (like Rouge One).

None of the actors feel like they are the characters they are attempting to portray.

Almost nothing of importance happens because it can't because it would change the lore since this takes place too close to Episode 4.

It's a cynical cooperate cash grab knowing people will go see anything and everything Star Wars that doesn't attempt to do anything but exist for that reason.

But if you look at it as just an action film, and not a Star Wars film, it's okay.

Personally for me, even if we have a general idea of what is not going to happen because we know certain characters will survive, I'd still read/watch it. As cliche as it sounds, it isn't about the destination but the journey and to me these side stories gives us more glimpses of the Star Wars universe. Some of us have already "seen" some of these via the books but I still enjoy seeing it on the big picture.

Without it taking place in the Star Wars universe, this woulda been like any other heist movie with the typical ingredients (i.e. the girl from a past life, betrayal, a mentor of sort, etc.) But it taking place within the Star Wars universe is enough for me to want to see it even if it adds nothing new to the overall story.

What would define a Star Wars film? I don't disagree with you and I do feel this is just a heist movie taking place in the Star Wars universe with some major Star Wars character. But what elements you feel are needed to make a film into a "Star Wars" film.

You kind of explained exactly what I was saying. This movie doesn't attempt to actually do anything.

It's "watch Han go on a silly adventure that doesn't mean anything."

You misunderstand the point I was making, this movie has Star Wars elements, obviously, but it's not actually attempting to expand the Star Wars story in any way, like I said, it just exists because Disney knows people will pay to go watch it because "it's Star Wars".

It's like watching an episode of Family Guy where at the end of the episode you know nothing that happened during the episode mattered.

I know it wouldn't have sold as many tickets, but a heist movie featuring all brand new characters that just happened to take place in the Star Wars universe that they could have gotten more creative with without trying to link everything to the old characters would have been more interesting to me.

Fair point. I do feel if properly done, a movie wouldn't need key characters to stand on its own. At the same time, having said key characters is itself a form of advertisement.

Over the years and after reading over a hundred Star Wars books I think I started to enjoy the various side stories/books more so than the "main" stories/books. It isn't so much that I grew bored of Luke, Han, Leia, and their families but rather I want to experience more of Star Wars from the "little guys" point-of-view. I think that's why the X-Wing series is my overall favorite, even over that of the Thrawn series and even the "Tales from . . . . ." series.

To be quite honest, even though I really liked Solo and Rogue One, the last Star Wars movie that came out and actually felt like it had that legitimate Star Wars magic was (hate me all you want) Revenge of the Sith. I know George was a consultant or something on Solo, but the original two trilogies just had the intangible Lucas touch.

I wouldn't lump Rogue One in that category. Or even The Last Jedi (which is hilariously dumb but definitely not uninspired).

Solo feels like the most desperate to make call backs to the old films, even though it's a very different story. It's the most directly tied to them, so I guess it kind of makes sense. But there are a lot of moments that will make your eyes roll.

I actually liked Rogue One a lot, but even I would say that's blatantly untrue.

Rogue One feels like it should have been twice as long (or a TV series instead of a movie). It sets up a lot of interesting things, has characters who could easily grow on you, and a plot that could definitely be interesting, and then it rushes through all of that so quickly that it becomes almost impossible to care about any of it, because everything feels incredibly shallow, and the motivations for nearly every character winds up feeling like it boils entirely down to "because the plot said so".

It's very much a visceral movie, where you can enjoy it in the moment, but the instant you watch it more than once or spend any time thinking about it, the more it starts to fall apart.

I'd argue that the last Star Wars movie that came out and actually felt like it had that legitimate Star Wars magic was Return of the Jedi.

And even that had a couple rough patches.

I enjoyed my time with the movie. It did what it's suppose to. Shows us a younger "origin story" version of Han and Chewie. Sure the stakes for Han, Chewie and Lando are not high since we know they survive, but the journey is fun imo.
