Poll of the Day > Why on earth do people buy remasters of games they've played (e.g. Dark Souls)?

I can totally understand circumstances like not having the proper console at the time, but why on earth would you spend more money on what ultimately amounts to minor improvements on a game you've already experienced or had the chance to experience? I feel like this is why game devs are so lazy lately- people just giving their money to support more trash on the market.

Because they like what the remaster adds and/or want to further support the company behind a game they really liked. In the case of Dark Souls, the Switch version of the remaster adds portability, which is a pretty big deal.

Frame rate makes a huge difference.

Plus tons of people play games multiple times. Especially in RPGs where two playthroughs can be very different based on the build you choose and the story choices you make. I'm honestly not sure if you're serious at this point.

Depends-- each game has a certain amount of replayability before it becomes stale; some people play a game to death because they're boring people, but that's personal preference. All this is aside the point, though. If you owned the game with slightly worse graphics and performance, you had all the time in the world to replay it. Why would you repurchase it to this end?

Aside from blight town, the framerate thing was never a huge issue. And frankly, I'm surprised that most people who repurchase the same games are serious, but then I remembered how terrible the current gaming market is, and how the dumb customers pay for the crappiest games/services.

Again you're circumventing the key issue here though- why can't you get the same "multiple playthroughs" from the slightly worse version you own?

Edit: And this doesn't even take into account that Dark Souls 3 is better than the original in most ways, at least gameplay-wise. Storywise and mapwise I'd agree the original is better.

Because in some cases I didn't play through the original version(s) and no longer have a console to play those on.

For example: I bought the Uncharted Collection to play through before playing UC4(which I STILL haven't played two years after getting my slim PS4 with a copy included lol). Mostly I got it to see if they had optimized it better so the system I'm playing it on doesn't go 'jet mode' while playing it or rather specifically Uncharted 3, which used to make my normally quiet slim PS3 into a hair dryer.

Like, I wanna support the series in hopes we get another but most of the time I can't justify getting the game again when I have a perfectly playable version and a multitude of games I need to catch up on.

For example, I want to buy Okami HD b/c I want Okami 2 (Okamiden was alright), but I don't want to sink anther 40hr into it when I have a backlog of like 50 other games. So generally I just buy whatever I haven't yet played Remastered, like Yakua Kiwami.

Why do people replay the same exact games with no changes? Because they want to. Seeing that, why is it any surprise if they buy a remaster or port even if little to nothing changes? For me, having a game available on the most recent hardware alone is reason enough if I'm going to replay it. That way I don't have to hook up a console I'm not playing anymore. The fact most remasters tend to be superior in some way or add things not there, that is even more reason for me. Though most my remasters or ports are superior for more than just resolution reasons if I already own and played a previous release of it.

Games with online communities and/or components should be no brainers as to why people buy the remaster or port that's on more recent platforms.

So your main reason behind this is that you don't want to plug in an old console to play the video game you already played- that's ridiculous to say the least. Who cares if its online component is temporarily revitalized? It's the same old game with the same old mechanics in slightly better quality.

This is still, and always will be the dumbest logic people have about video games. They are not going to make Okami 2 just because you bought the HD version of the first game, which came out 12 years ago by the way; that ship has sailed. If anything, why wouldn't they simply make Okamiden HD? Would you buy that, too? If they really wanted to make a sequel, they would have done it by now. One thing you do not want is for a series to be revived with the sole motivation being money instead of creating a good product.

I didn't buy or like any KH game personally but it still shits on the point. KH3 happened because the audience stayed around long enough for them to get their act together and invest in full scale production.

Again, they had still been making other Kingdom Heart games, not only the remixes. People who play those game don't consider them as spin-offs either. I, for one, can more intelligently argue that not buying the remixes would show a disinterest for the same thing in a different outfit and spark the creators more towards making an new, original game. I'm not of the mindset to force other people to think a certain way, though. I've said what I wanted to, and that's all I desire.

What are we considering a remaster as opposed to a full-scale remake?

Anyway, if there was a game that I thought was worth playing through several times but that had, say, somewhat fuzzy graphics and some rather common bugs, I might buy the version of it that had those problems fixed even if there were no other upgrades. In fact (for example), I kind of wish that the DS version of Final Fantasy IV had been just that relative to the Game Boy Advance version; the 3D graphics of the former didn't feel as "iconic" to me.
