Hello and Welcome!

You have arrived to my 2nd "Ranks 1,000+" project and this time around instead of B8 users we will be tackling 1,300 songs from the last 5 decades.

Just a couple of notes about the list:
-This ranking is almost entirely subjective. Please do not engage in a debate with me about whether this list qualifies as a legit "Best of" list. This is Not a ranking to determine the "best" based on record numbers or sales statistics etc.

This is purely a collection of tunes that are most appealing to my personal interests in music found within the amount of time I spent on research (with 300 nominations included). When the ranking is over you are more than welcome to reference any tunes that I did not include. I'm always down for great music and who knows, it is entirely possible that I will have simply overlooked some stuff that should be here. I listened to more than 5,000+ songs over the course of about 13 months or so, so I hope that was enough ground covered to at least offer some satiability. I have personally enjoyed the research either way.

---There are 260 songs representing each of the chosen decades. (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's)

----Yes I know the current decade has not yet completed but we are doing this anyway. Tbh there was sooooooo much terrible music this decade that I doubt we'll get anything much better than what we got right here. If I'm wrong, it doesn't matter because I don't want to sift through any more of this "Just Dance" infested generation.lol

Why didn't I include the 60's?
Simple, because I'm not confident I could have pulled 200 songs from that decade and also I would have known immediately what the #1 song would have been for this ranking.

So Instead... I present that song as this topic's Theme Song:

(...I really don't know why I favor this tune over everything else but every time I hear it I get a special kind of goosebumps.)

Paint It Black / The Rolling Stones / 1966
[10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4irXQhgMqg" data-time="

The Rollout
I will be dropping you tunes in a couple ways here. Each song will be ranked out of total 1,300 and top 260 from their decade. There will be several statistics included in an ongoing update. There will also be a special ongoing update displaying the Top ranked songs in every genre. *Genres were selected either by research or best fitting based on my experience.

The Nominator Challenge:
Some of you have submitted Nominations. You will recieve an update in topic whenever one of a user's nominations gets ranked. You will collect a Sum of points equivalent to the Sum of every placement on your list of nominations. The Larger this number, the lower you will place in the finals. The user who has earned the smallest score in the finals will have made the best nominations and be called Winner of the Nominator Challenge. (This is a Bonus game I play in most of my rankings.) ***At the start of this there are 2 Unclaimed Bots (#1 and #3). Anyone who wishes to claim a bot may do so in topic. First come, first serve.***

The Topic Discussion rules
Be Friendly, Be Respectful and Be Appropriate!

I'm always cool with off topic posting as long as it stays friendly. With my Bi-polar I am sometimes easily triggered by unfriendly disputes and would like this space to be as free from that kind of stress as possible. Thank You

So, enjoy and get settled in for the ride! There are sooo many great tunes heading your way. Thanks for stopping by and following the ranking. I hope that not only can users discover some new music here but maybe participate in some candid conversation about their favorite tunes as they pop up. Your Pal, Se7en. =P

Final Score Breakdown:

[Beat]-[Hook]-[Lyrics]-[Memories]-[Message]-[Stickiness]-[Top 100]

Example
[10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3

[The Beat]
This will represent the overall rhythm and progression of the song imo. A slight evaluation of the instruments used in a song will also have weight on the final beat score.

[The Hook]
This will represent how likely it is that I listen to the whole song if it popped up on the radio. It will also represent the interest that I have to even finish a song.

[The Lyrics]
This will represent how well the verse and chorus are written imo. It will also represent my ability to memorize and sing along with the song if I have that interest. I also use this to measure how well the vocals mesh with the rest of the song imo.

[The Memories]
This will represent how much the song invokes personal memories. In some cases a song may gain points based on it's use in other Pop Culture I am familiar with.

[The Message]
This will represent the message of the song or the difficulty of understanding it's meaning imo. It also represents a degree of emotional response that I get from hearing the song. I also include points if a song comes with a decent backstory.

[The Stickiness]
This will represent the likelyhood that the song will get stuck in my head when I hear it. Depending on whether it's a verse, chorus, beat, simple riff or the whole damn song can determine how many extra points I give.

[Top 100 Bonus]
The ONLY piece of this scoring system that will be slightly Objective. I will score based on an average of the info I find. Top 100 lists, Best song lists, overall sales, awards won etc.

[The Leaning Points]
Every Song ranked will receive a "leaning" score in all 7 categories. A [0.1], [0.2] or [0.3] will be added to help the further breakdown of a songs final score. It's simply as follows:
[0.1] = I'm not 100% sure how I feel about a final score.
[0.2] = The final score can go either way up or down.
[0.3] = I am 100% confident in a final score.

I could have sworn I did but I backspaced my browser all the way to the post I made and it had a friggin' html error.

I must have posted and left the laptop before seeing that it was an error and then the purge came. :/

We'll get this going again though btw.

I am hosting the Victim Circle III atm and we are 16 days in and it's been pretty busy/active so I've had a lot of reading to do there which takes up a good portion of my free time to update here. I expect that it shouldn't be more than another 15 days or less till the end of the game which will give me a chance to power through rankings here for 2 weeks before I host GnT Big Brother 7.

Write-Up:
This is an interesting song as it was covered within 6 months of the release and it was the cover that became popular. This version was only mildly successful and rightfully so imo. There really is only like one song that I even like from Kenny Loggins and this isn't it. After hearing the song I think most would agree that it sounds better as Pop than Soft Rock. I think this was actually co-written between Loggins and the Doobie Brothers which is why both would go on to release their own versions. What I don't know is if this was intentional or not. The song would go on to help the Doobie Brothers win a grammy and poor old Kenny Loggins would be left empty handed. Kinda surprised there was never any type of lawsuit as a result.

Best Version IMO:

Here is a blast from the... not-so-past lol. I really thought this was from the 70's or something but nope it was released just 10 years ago. Never heard it before here though. It's got some cool note-bending about 3 minutes in which leads to a decent rock solo but out of the whole song that was the only part that I listened more intently. I do get a light audioslave vibe at that point which is probably why I liked that part of the song. Other than that there isn't much here for me. Kinda like Applebee's baby back ribs that are 75% bone and barely any meat.

Re-popularized when Guardians of the Galaxy was released is this gem of a song. Not a big fan here but I do recognize why it is liked. It's kind of short tbh but I guess that's ok. It was actually released originally in 1968 by Mark James and BJ Thomas and the version you hear in GotG is another cover by Blue Swede which is a bit better but not enough for me to drop a "Best of" mention here. Truth be told I think the Blue Swede version is slower than it should be although it does add more instrumentation. Interesting thing about the Blue Swede version too is that they removed the drug reference that appeared in earlier versions which I think was dumb since the reference was so subtle to begin with but what do I know since their version went all the way to No #1.

Album: Midnight Memories

Um... no, this isn't really the best song ever. I don't know what is up with the lengthy sketch before the song actually begins but it did make me chuckle with the boy band jokes and the Tom Cruise spoof. I think the chorus is fine and the beat is decent but it isn't something I'd listen to on my own for any purposeful reason. The fans love it though and it charted well on a couple different charts which is the only reason I selected it for this ranking. The song would become One Direction's highest charting song in the US so far. Oh hey.. apparently comedian James Cordon helped write the skit in the music video so I guess it makes some sense now.

Um... what the? Somehow the link that used to take me to this song is now being used to direct people to "Just A Ride by Rishloo". I think that is the first time I've ever seen that happen. Anyway, I found a new link so hopefully it doesn't change again. Oh no wait... damnit. What actually happened is I mixed up the links. Rishloo is a nomination on Phoenix's list. Woops. This song has a beat that I can get into and I thought it was funny that there is a lyric that addresses the band's placement on the charts... which I'm not sure how they knew ahead of time but interestingly enough the band hovered in popularity almost exactly where they state it does in the song. The album makes it even further stopping around 33rd place on the charts.

Write-Up:
Another song that is significantly affected by my Country bias. It's not something I have intentionally set out to do in this ranking as in I didn't just automatically push every Country song to the bottom of the list but after going through the score system my actual interests shine through. It's not often that I do like Country music and usually if and when I do, it is almost never a sappy love song. I can admit that the harmony here is pretty well done and I don't think anyone would dispute Taylor Swift's ability to turn out hits as this still had a fair following making it somewhere in the top 20 songs the year it was released. But... I would never willingly listen to this in front of anyone I know in real life now as I know very few people that like Country music. Hmm, now I wonder... did I intentionally stray away from people who do like Country over the years or are the Country fans that few and far between these days?

Ugghh! I don't know exactly what it is but most of this band's music gives me solid migraines. I think it narrows down to the voice of the lead singer though. Her voice is kind of like a fabled brown note as in it reaches just the right tone and pitch to induce headaches and tbh I'd probably rather s*** my pants than listen to this song ever again as my head is throbbing atm (I've listened to it 5 or 6 times in a row while doing this so far). The beat is kinda ok and there are some places where the vocals aren't so annoying but jeezum. Can this band do anything else? Most of their stuff that I've heard sounds just like this.

Write-Up:
Here is one of the few songs that skirts the Album rules I laid out before starting this ranking. Scores and Movie themes work a little bit different imo because it wasn't all that common in the 70's and 80's to see original soundtrack releases and even into the 90's it hadn't really become a solid thing yet. Nowadays though almost every popular movie gets an OST release and they have even been going back to release soundtracks to classic films such as the one we have as an example here. The other big reason I've bypassed the rules here is because the Album is not a re-recording. They actually took original music and simply made it available 29 years later.

Damn. I knew The Partridge Family was significant pop culture in the 70's but I had no idea this was a chart topper. I also didn't realize The Partridge Family was actually a band too. I kinda thought it was a group put together because of the show and movies. Shows how much I care for the music I'm sure. Anyway, I guess I could see the hype in the 70's over this as it's got a decent pop culture vibe. However, for me listening here in 2018... this song sounds like it is for old people only if that makes any sense. Not much other input to give unfortunately as I only selected it for the ranking because it was a #1 hit and I needed to fill the 70's list.

Write-Up:
I am most certainly familiar with Incubus but I wouldn't go as far as saying that this is one of their better songs as I have heard better. It's still on ok metal track despite how short it is though. The message is the highest scoring thing for me here and everything else is kind of under par. For me this isn't really a song that you can even sing to tbh because of the constant change in tempo vocally as the lead singer Brandon Boyd switches from spoken word to singing and back. I like some of the stuff the band has done but as I am not a die hard fan, I prefer their stuff from Make Yourself much better. One interesting thing I have learned here that I didn't know before is what the band's name actually means and it's more graphic than I ever took the band for. For those of you that don't know an Incubus is a demon that goes around having sex with women who are asleep. Pretty dark tbh.

Meh... I already am not much of a fan of Kiss so it shouldn't be a surprise that I have no interest in a song from one of their worst albums of their careers. I can almost see what they were going for here with the atmosphere and orchestral tidbits but it really doesn't get anywhere near the epic status I think they may have been shooting for. It's largely forgettable tbh and there isn't even a significant solo or anything. You can almost barely call this Progressive Rock either which it kind of technically is and isn't. First to note of course is that it is considerably shorter than most Progressive Rock songs tend to be. I think the band may have been going through some changes during the release of the album this appears on since most of the music is a bit different than what they usually produce. Oh ouch, yeah.. I guess the sales were so bad from this album that Kiss decided not to even go on tour with the set as they did with their previous 8 albums.

Right off the bat I do like the guitar play in this song. I even like the concept and the message. Einstein's special theory of relativity and time dilation is explored as several space explorers go on a year long journey only to return to earth and realize that 100 years has actually passed. It's neat but I don't think the execution was tip top. Of course you get your usual vocalization from the band here that so many folks like about Queen but this is another example of a song I don't think matches the genre that it is commonly placed in. It's kind of a cross between Folk and Pop and isn't really as long or diverse as I'd expect from a Progressive Rock song. The beat is steady though. I chuckled but it was completely unintentional that this scored a 3.9 in sync with the song title.

Write-Up:
This song isn't too bad but fails in a couple ways. Lyrically for example, there is no substance since they pretty much repeat the same thing over and over and over and over. Plus I never understood songs that used spelling out something to avoid actually rhyming. It's got an ok beat but even that is on a short repetitious loop for the whole song. Interesting though that I thought I had never heard this song before but according to the wiki it is featured in the game Thrillville which I own but never really sat down to play completely. The band has had a few hiccups since it started in 2001 replacing out one or two of the band members a couple times. Eventually in 2012 though the band was at it's end as the lead singer Chantal Claret left the band to go solo.

This is a classic for 80's fans that love The Cars. I wonder how many of those fans don't know that this isn't from the 80's though. The band of course is almost synonymous with the 80's as some of their greatest hits were born in the 80's. How many times can I say "80's" in a couple of sentences? Anyway, this isn't one of my favorites from this band and there are a couple more songs of theirs further up the list. The series of claps heard in the song were actually borrowed from a 1962 song by The Routers. This song is commonly believed to be the best song from the album Candy-O.

Yeah... so here's the thing. I'm almost always going to be hyper critical of anything where Ozzy Osbourne does the vocals. He tends to hit notes and harmonize at decibals that just bug the s*** out of my ears. Not all of his songs are that bad of course as there are some in this ranking further up the list that I find completely tolerable. I used to think it was part of his act but after all these years I've discovered that I really am bias towards his singing. I do remember this song well from the mid to late 90's since I was in a rock phase at that time and listened to a lot of rock stations where this was prominently played. Some folks laude it as one of his most classic tunes but it never actually fared well on the charts.

Write-Up:
Interesting tune and a bit different than I was expecting from a Slipknot song. I'm kind of surprised that this wasn't nominated with the first part as well since they are integral to each other (and I probably would have accepted the nomination that way). It's a pretty dark song that explores the aftermath of a tragedy in an interesting way. The subject of the song is a woman that has died from an unamed reason that could either be from drug use or murder. I interpreted it at first as the woman becoming a victim of rape but after watching part 1 I'm not so sure although lyrically it sounds like the singer is expressing regret for having been responsible for her death. Either way the song is a departure from the usual Death Metal the band is known for.

Biased against, you mean.

And really? I'm aware it was considered a single, but I've never heard this song anywhere other than from my own copy of Ozzmosis. I remember one time somebody else mentioned it in conversation and I jumped up and high-fived that guy.

I might have been thinking in terms of presently showing bias when I typed that and not realized I was speaking in past tense.

Man, the first Doors song to pop up on the list and it happens to be one of the last songs Jim Morrison would ever write. Apparently most of his vocals in this song were recorded in a bathroom at their West Hollywood workshop because the room had a natural reverb to it. Something interesting here is the line "Mr Mojo Risin" that is used is actually an anagram of "Jim Morrison". I never really listened to much by the Doors though until I hit my 30's and started to develop an ear for some classic tunes. The piano play is fun but other than that there isn't a lot to hold my interest in this song unfortunately.

The first song to score at least 4 points comes from a band that I usually like but am clearly not fully familiar with since I barely remember hearing this song. I may have actually heard it when checking out samples of the album when it came out. It isn't my favorite album of theirs though which is why I may have passed up on giving it much attention. The beat is decent and I always liked the lead singers vocals but for the rest of the song it feels sort of amateur-ish tbh. Basically they have much better songs to listen to that we'll take a look at at some point here.

Write-Up:
Here is a band that is almost entirely dedicated to Progressive music. I can imagine that their jam sessions must have been quite the event because the variety in the riffs and solos that they come up with almost always sound completely spontaneous. This song has several issues but it's counterbalanced with several great riffs and a really good solo. I dare say that there is too much going on in this song but at some points it feels like there could be a couple different songs mixed together (which is probably silly to say considering it is progressive music). I used to know someone that was an avid fan of this band though and he would always try to get everyone to listen to it in kind of an annoying fashion.

The interesting thing about setting up a scoring system spreadsheet where I just key in values and it lines up the songs for me (for the most part until I have to decide the tied lineups) is that I get to be surprised at where things land and sometimes... not so surprised. Then there are the songs that I don't recall scoring so high or low as I get to them such as this one. It's not something I really care for but I'm not sure if I scored it correctly. I mean, I obviously do when I break it down but seeing the songs before dropping them officially causes me to second guess myself sometimes. Anyway, It becomes most obvious when I feel like this when I fill the write-ups with utter nonsense because I have no idea what to say about the song. XP (No but really, this might be too high on the list... or too low?)

RANKING RE-REVIEW #1

Howdy folks. Welcome the the first of what is sure to be a few re-visits to previous rankings. This series of posts (yeah there will sure to be more) is something I decided to include because early on I had decided on a way to deal with what I like to call "Ranking Regret". I didn't realize it right away but after the first 1,000 item ranking I completed and now having compiled and reviewed 1,300 songs here It was plain as day that sometimes not enough time can be spent with every nomination/selection.

What this post series will do is grant the viewer insight to how a song may rank if there were to be a sequel. Along with the current info you get with the ranking I will also offer an approximate score of where the song could land on a re-vised list.

On the the first Ranking Regret... we have a song that has just been bouncing inside of my head since the day I dropped it. Had I caught it in time or known it was gonna burrow itself inside of my brain, I could have perhaps changed it's fate in this ranking.

This song just won't leave my thoughts especially in the last few days. I don't think I gave it the right kind of listening ear that I should have honestly. I wondered if the fact that I was expecting something totally different from the band is what threw me off. Anyway, this song is a whole lot deeper than I gave it credit for and is perfectly poetic. The rhythm and vocals have put me in such a trance that I've had difficulty focusing on other things. I've recently had to deal with yet another death in the family and the melancholic harmony here has allowed me to vent the sadness and frustration that comes with recognizing one's mortality. I know the nomination is on the Bot's list but I wanted to thank you @Chinballz for this nomination.

Write-Up:
Umm.. so here I kinda have the opposite feeling of Ranking Regret where I think something should be much lower. I mean the score is accurate so this placement is right but there are several songs that have already been ranked that I feel like "on the surface" are better songs to listen to but then again it doesn't just come down to whether or not I can tolerate listening to a song. This is an ok song and it sounds like it should be a classic but the whole thing is under par imo. The band is/was semi-popular in Canada though so it made it onto the ranking when I was scooping up some of the top international songs from the 80's.

Write-Up:
The beat is decent and vocals are ok. The first song to drop in the Punk genre (just Punk without any variation) that is. It could be the age in which the song was released but I couldn't find much of a following for this band. Maybe the real fans aren't too internet saavy? This isn't really a song that I would add to any playlist but I might not change the station if I happen to hear it on the radio. I did see this get classified somewhere as an "Oldies" song so that might back up the claim I make about it's fans not hanging around on the internet.lol

Song: "The Robots"
Band: Kraftwerk
Album: The Man Machine

Write-Up:
I think the beat is decent here as well but I'm having some trouble appreciating the rest of the song. When the chorus kicks in I lose interest in the song which was disappointing considering I actually thought the intro was done well. Something about the robot voice throws it off imo. Not sure what it is but the redundancy of "we are the robots" just isn't all that intriguing. The band has some fans and this song seems to be one of their better ones not really scoring high enough for me to care though really.

Write-Up:
Lol. So I was completing the write-up for this song and noticed that I didn't have it tagged as a nomination but thought it sounded like something Snake would have nominated so I double checked and indeed I forgot to tag it as one of his nominations. I'm not the biggest fan of Industrial Metal but the right songs can make me feel like a diehard and unfortunately this isn't one of them. I think the name of the album here is kinda funny though. This song tanked on the charts.. but that isn't completely terrible I suppose as it did actually make it on the charts at least.
