Don't worry you will be alright! Have you actually been picked to participate in the actual jury? I got called in with like 50 other people and I didn't get picked so just got to go home haha

Well don't worry too much, the odds are in your favour!

And dont worry even if you do get picked... The defendant can plead guilty before a jury is needed and a bunch of stuff can happen. I never became a jury member so if you get picked and the case goes to trial... Then maybe get a bit nervous lol

The chances of you actually having to sit on a jury are pretty damn low then.

For example, when I went in for municipal court, all of the day's cases plead out the morning of so they didn't actually have any need for us and we were all out by 10 AM. If you have to sit through a selection process it'll probably take longer, but it's only really bad if you get picked

Been there done that.

Got picked About a month before my 25th, I was sick as a dog but made it (It actually vanished the second day in).

Got reimbursed for Bus fare and the food was on them.

Short end of it; It was a case of "She Said that He did" Defendant was a naive guy whose English was limited. Plaintiff, with the help of her friends, concocted a story with more holes than swiss cheese. We weighed up ALL the evidence, found him NOT Guilty by the end of the week.

Yeah the one time I got called for duty they didn't even call me up for questioning for the first case, and the judge told us afterwards the rest of the cases settled so we were done.

My time at jury duty i stayed the full week and had to serve on two separate juries, one of which I was foreman for. I had just turned 19.

First case was a man and woman who had been caught trespassing in an older neighbor's house. Neighbor's saw the woman stealing jewelry so she had already made a deal pleading guilty to theft and was trying to have her ex charged too. We found the boyfriend guilty if trespassing because he was definitely in the house with her, but not guilty for theft.

Second case was a bar brawl where the defendantwas caught on camera hitting someone over the head with a beer bottle and knocking him over a railing. Super guilty.

I have been asked 3 times. Just toss it away. If they do not send it certified, which they usually don't, they cannot prove you ever received it.

I sat around for hours. Finally went in for a trial. They didnt finish selecting us but I was in a seat. We had to come back the next day. The bailiff came to take us to court and then brought everyone back saying something was happening in the court room. 15 more minutes he comes back and says the guy changed his plea the guilty and the judge sentenced him. Got paid for 2 days and I decided to take my day off since my work offers pto for jury duty.

I knew there were ways out of it, but it was summer and I thought it was somewhat interesting, so I actually tried my best to get picked, and I did.

Mine was a case about this guy who was befriending college chicks so he could go in late at night and know all their valuable shit was. There were testimonies from a pawn shop that the defendant was in there selling stuff under a false name, and one of the computer towers he sold had these antique coins in it that the victim had put in there, so it was definitely hers. Plus, other stolen laptops were found in a tornado shelter that technically wasn't on his property because it was for the community, but it was like 30 feet from his house.

We took 20 minutes to deliberate and if it wasn't for me, we'd probably have been done within 10. The judge talked to us afterward and was surprised this case didn't break his record of 15 minutes.

Damn, I got in the way of history lol.

Yeah we had to sit for many hours while they were picking the final juror for the case because everyone kept giving answers that weren't to the satisfaction of both parties, intentionally or otherwise.

How do they already know how long the trial is going to be?

About 5 years ago I was on a jury and it took 17 court days spread out over a month. I would have killed for a 2 day trial at that point.

This does not work btw. Brother was picked up and spent a day in jail for not showing up for Jury Duty with a bunch of other peopel that didn't go, despite saying he never got it (and no it was not certified).

They do not care if you got it or not. You're expected to show up even if you don't know about it.

Yes, I know that's dumb. Dumb is what our justice system does.

That said they don't go after everyone that dodge. My brother got unlucky- its way more likely nothing will happen.

I personally do not know a single person who has ever been picked up for not going under those circumstances. They cannot prove you ever got it.

That said, some places may be stricter than others.

Day 1 concluded! I can't discuss the trial right now, of course, but I can talk about the jury process. Essentially, in the courtroom the judge and attorneys were interviewing potential jury members. Even questions like, what bumper stickers you have or what you do for fun were asked. There were about 50 people so I thought I had good odds to get out. But slowly, people were excused and eventually I was called up. I was actually the final jury member to be chosen, which was kinda wild.

But, you know, this hasn't been so bad yet.

Gotten jury duty 3 times.

First time I called each day and never had to go in.

Second I had to go in on the last day of the week. All of the potential jurors for the day sat in a room waiting in case a case needed jurors, no one got called all day, went home.

Third time I got in the room and put in a potential jury pool. Came in the next day for maybe jury selection, case had been settled and we all went home immediately.

Have gotten called twice. Once I was in college so I simply proved to them that I wasn't available and was excused.

Second time I was about a week into starting a new job when I got called. I was pretty worried that I'd get picked for some long trial since this was my first full time job and that's just something that would happen to me. It was also a night shift position so I had just gotten my sleep schedule in order and was absolutely exhausted when I went in. Luckily all the cases for the day were settled out of court so we went home just before lunch time.

Got done pretty early.

At the end of the day the case was pretty easy. I won't go into every detail but a few years ago, a guy and a woman got into a little car accident. The guy seemed to be fine just after the accident, but nearly a year later said he got a shoulder injury from it. The trial was basically concerned with whether or not this injury came from that accident. Each side had two witnesses, the plaintiff/defendant themselves and a doctor. Long story short, the defense had tons of evidence thoroughly showing how this injury is not connected, and the plaintiff's side had relatively little. Even the plaintiff's doctor couldn't help much for his case. The doctors were video recordings, and they went on a while. We the jurors couldn't talk about the case to each other until the trial ended, but we talked AROUND it and even from the start we were all on the same page: the guy not getting anything here. I'll also say that while the plaintiff's attorney was OK, the defense's attorney was pretty amazing. Like a "TV Lawyer" if that makes any sense.

So, the whole thing was kinda cool to see honestly.

I didn't realize being called in for one day was even a thing.

I've been summoned once. Showed up with like 80 people, my name didn't get called, and I went home. But if I'd been picked, I would have served every month for a year.

Something something grand jury I guess.

In my case, it was pretty much the opposite. The prosecutor had all her shit together and presented everything incredibly clearly, whereas the defense was grasping at every straw he possibly could.

Probably the difference between criminal vs. civil proceedings. Civil proceedings are often on a more level playing field.
