I remember there was another daughter of one of taihei's coworkers that we didn't see in the first season. Hopefully she's in the second because she sounded sweet.

Nah, all she is is yet another girl on Taihei's nuts 24/7. Because we needed 3 of those. Doesn't really add anything to the show.

At least they're persistent enough to finish it, but who wants it anymore lol.

@kirbymuncher i was listening to the OST for symphogear. You know, i never like, listened to just the soundtrack without the anime noises and stuff, this is pretty good stuff, the battle themes are already hype in the anime but as standalone songs they're pretty freaking cool.

I feel 0 desire to watch it after the trainwreck of a 10th episode.

you think the 10th episode was the bad one? honestly I felt like things started coming back together sort of for that episode. somehow. like, there were some iffy spots in it sure (just like in every other episode) but it wasn't anywhere near the level of eps 8 or 9 which were just super ugly and messy almost the whole way through.

I'd watch ep 11 and 12, tbh. the setting has some ideas which are pretty cool and I personally have a big soft spot for stories / the idea of what a "story" is being used as allegories / stand-ins / sources of magic which si basically what this entire series is based on

The whole series is a bit of an insult. They had such a neat concept, but they don't explain ANYTHING, we have no idea about the shadowy figures and what their deal is, and the series spent more time exploring nearly nude young girls than the cool idea of the story.

it felt to me like the kind of setup that's supposed to be starting with the "action" and introducing things later and/or gradually but instead with all the issues around both the anime (the mess this season was) and the LNs (the author being dead now) it will probably just forever be unclear

I can tolerate a fair bit of info left unsaid in this sort of thing since that's essentiallly how fairy tales work so it's a good tie between the content and the structure. this thing sorta pushes a little too far on that though at times. I did like the first arc though and I think the 2nd could have been alright if they actually concluded it instead of stopping just before the finals of the tournament arc lol

Feels like ever since LN general disappeared, I haven't done a recommendation thing in a long long while

But if you're looking to see what the likes of edgy teens and Linkin Park listeners would totally be into, look no further than Nidome no Yuusha. A series so edgy that you'll get cut just reading it.

An isekai hero saves the world but is betrayed by his party member after he defeats the big bad. He swears revenge as he's dying, and the world informs him that that was just a fucking tutorial. Now it's basically his 3rd chance at life, and this time, he's out for revenge.

Cheesy as fuck and entertainingly violent. Only 3 chapters of it on manga form but I heard the LN is fairly far in, so it's something I'm definitely gonna have to see. I love a good edgy revenge story. It's sorta my kink

well really, marchen madchen fit my #1 requirement for battle series which is having powers based on stuff. and I don't just mean saying someone who shoots fireballs has powers based on fire or something dumb like that. beeing based on stories is cool, being based on historic figures is cool, being based on mythological weapons is cool, etc etc. Basically, if the character announces their name / their weapon name and you pause the show, go look it up on wikipedia, and the info you find there is actually relevant to what their abilities and combat style are, that's good.

It also means you can have fun trying to guess what certain characters are based on, or try to predict possible parts of their powers they may be keeping hidden

(on a related note pls recommend me these)

Yeah I don't mind that usually, where some similar series dedicate like more than half of their running time on purely explaining their powers and trying to figure out a way to counter it using their own set of limited powers. Even more bonus points when the main party is significantly outgunned and survives by using wit on top of their power.

Imo, recently, ironically the series that did it best is a non-fantasy one, which is Kaiji and the current One Poker Hen

But it just felt like something was missing when I was watching Marchen Madchen. The theme was pretty sweet, and I like the approach for the powers based on regional fables in the later tournament arc. But maybe their powers are a bit too simple? It rarely felt like they were specifically outwitting their opponents at several points.

It's so edgy that I love it. But imo it's not super melodramatic so far, which is a point for the series. The main character is pretty focused on the revenge aspect and only tries to do stuff that contributes to his revenge. But I heard the manga cut out a superfluous torture scene that had nothing to do with his revenge, so maybe the manga is like a final draft, and the LN is melodramatic.

They introduced an edgy looking bunny chick tho. One of those "I recognized her eyes... they reminded them of mine" kinda situation

battles being kinda meh isn't a big deal to me since it's not really about the battles themselves in my mind. I just like seeing how authors reinterpret whatever the original basis is into a set of powers that make sense in the setting and are usually totally different while also still being recognizable as the originals. the fights could all be onesided stomps for all I care

Hmm, been seeing the name around here and there, so I'll probably check it out.

On the other hand, I don't really have anything to recommend since most of the stuff I like aren't translated into English.

Been slowly making my way through MH World here, and while it's not as strong as an opening volume compared to Tamashii, it's great with its focus on the characters' interacting and adapting to environments they're not used to.

You know, now that I think about it, the Monster Hunter novels also do that to an extent with the characters' weapons and armor of choice.
Not based on other pre-existing stuff, but on the stuff contained within the games and/or spawned by the player base.

Definitely do give it a try. It's currently my favorite light novel series.

Edit: Hah, they paired DanMachi's Hermes (spelled he-ru-me-su in JP) with Kino's Hermes (spelled e-ru-me-su). Definitely saw it coming.

Well, it's pretty complicated, to be honest. The novels are like collections of short stories with each chapter being standalone, and the anime series chooses a few chapters to adapt.
It's also worth noting that three key stories included in the 2003 version was adapted again in the 2017 version, two of them due to being crucial to the main characters' origins.

The 2003 anime version cuts out a fair amount of details from individual stories but includes more of them by splicing stories with similar themes together in some episodes. Three of the stories were changed significantly, two for the better and one for worse.
I personally don't prefer how Kino is portrayed in this series though. Only shows the character's neutral, detached side for most of the time because of the chapters chosen, and Hermes isn't given as much attention as I'd like.

The 2017 anime is mostly a faithful adaptation, but two stories in particular are heavily abridged due to their length in the novel. The art style is more simple compared to the 2003 series, and the CG can be a bit jarring in some scenes (especially two particular shots in the first episode).
The stories included here shows the main characters in numerous different angles and doesn't shy away from showing their less sympathetic sides, which I really liked.

The other characters in the collab (Tiffana, Photo & Sou) only appear in the novel and the 2017 anime, so there's also that to consider.

And yeah, I've translated some of the LN. The first half of volume 1, two of the visual books, and a special chapter of the manga.
