Hey guys, you all submitted some pretty good and also some pretty bad anime songs imo and this is where you get to see where they fall. Many will enter, but only one will leave the champion.

There was a fairly good spread in songs I liked and ones I didn't. If you want to know here's how the rankings worked.

I start by listening to all the songs to see what I think about them and give them an initial rating. This rating holds a lot of weight as it determines the block its put in. Songs are then sorted within those blocks for the final rating. Because my mood varies from day to day some songs might have benefited (or have been hurt) by this. This is in no ways a perfect ranking even based on my own criteria, but the bottom and tops of the list should be pretty close to what I'd say most of the time.

3 songs on the list got initial 10 ratings and will be the top 3 on the list. I have not decided the order yet but I'll let you guys try to guess which 3 they are.

This is one of the few songs I considered painful to listen to. This is the only song on the list that got a 0 rating and I struggled to even finish the initial listen. Its like they were purposely trying to make it bad in a weird arthouse type of way. It's this awful combination of like screech and whine that I can only describe as ear hiv. I have not seen hell, but I've heard it.

The first thing that really stands out is that this song just sounds very lazy. Like the composition is just non existent and the singing almost seems bored throughout the entire song. I mean everything about it just sounds so phoned in. Slow parts in the song are not excuses for nothing to be happening at all. The resets in the song are awkward, and there is zero payoff at the end.

This takes way too long to do anything and then it really does nothing much. For me tracks like this need either a huge bang or just have a quality level that is so undeniable that it kind of cancels out it being kind of dull without added context.

So Ill briefly tackle each version. The first one is something I can only see working with proper context. Ill never find it good, just suitable at best. The second one I think is just kind of meh overall, theres nothing to really point out except that I find the vocals to be pretty bad and in this case Im not even sure if thats intentional or not. The final version is the best one but its still hard to really get a feel for it because its so short.

Like, this was pretty enjoyable until she started singing. Its not that this is ranked this low because of that. Its like it takes me out of the song 100%. Her voice almost clashes with the entire song. This would have been much better if they just sang like a loosely translated version of the song or something (something I know is not always possible to do, but make do). Anyone would be able what the song is by the melody alone.

This is one of those songs where Im very excited when it starts and slowly I get more and more disappointed until where the song is almost unbearable. This is like barely even a concept much less a song.

This is a little out there even for me. I think for me this track suffers from two major issues. The first is that the overall composition is fairly simple, it doesnt really have a standout part and nothing can really shine in like a wow thats cool kind of way. It just goes through without raising expectations of doing anything special. Even if it did raise expectations in anyway Im not even sure the song makes the choir like part mix with the more hard rock background like it was going for. Its like the track wanted to be somewhat ambitious but gave up somewhere halfway.

I see this brought up semi-frequently as like hidden anime OP gems or like greatest anime OP track type deals. Let me tell you. I dont like this song. At risk of sounding like it myself, this is one of those tracks where I imagine like some pretentious guy with a cigar or something explaining that this is what authentic music is like. There are places and songs where I think Id like the vocalist quite a bit. But I was never a fan of the pairing of this vocal and slower instrumental style. Like neither part is doing it for me. Nothing happens. I feel like its supposed to be a powerful emotional piece or something, but it simply doesnt have the type of progression or story that a song like that needs to have.

Okay, so Gabriel DropOut has an incredible voice cast. Their song is very fun and fits the show perfectly. But Im judging this outside of the show and were not taking into account the funny animation we also get with the song. And I just cant call this a good song. Its like the very lazily autotuned them and put music to the back of it or something. I know its not exactly like this but I dont have any other comparisons.

So sometime down this list Im going to say how much I like interesting or cute sounding stuff. This is way overboard on everything. This like being cute for the sheer sake of being cute and not for like adding a type the feel the song should have. Also the guy in the song is so bad.

Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku is the kinda song that's like, super cool in context, but it doesn't really work on its own? Like it's ultra cheesy and over the top and fun, but not actually all that good. Love it just for how it's used in the show though.

This just feels so boring for everything going on. I think an issue is that its going to be compared to other FMA and FMA BH songs, and like most of them are better than this one. Theres just no distinction in like anything thats being played and the whining vocals only make the overall melding of everything sound even worse.

I think the start of this song is a lot stronger than the rest of the entire track. Like basically when she starts singing it pretty much goes way down hill. Like just from her tone in the song it almost seems like she doesnt know the words sometimes when shes singing.

So, there are sparks of things in this track I like. Mainly the little instrumental flares that pop up every now and then. But, I really dont enjoy the vocalist (I actually dont like a lot of music by the Pillows). Not really offensive, but I dont think Id call it enjoyable in the loosest sense of the word.

This was okay but it sounded too much like say a sample of a piece that is more suited for something with another song or like a prelude or something to that effect. Like technically its find but way to minimalistic to be ranked highly here.

I think this starts off pretty well but I got bored of it fairly quickly. They basically played the same sequence for the entire song and did what might be some minor variations with like speed and such. Not overly impressed.

Okay like despite liking some of this groups stuff Im not really feeling this track. She can really belt it out when she needs to, but the song almost sounds completely devoid of the emotion needed with it a lot of times.

I think that in a type of context this song works pretty well but as a standalone its not doing it for me. The vocals just seem so off for some reason and the entire song just kind of melds together in a mess. I did like some of the string selection but not enough to get this song any higher. This is actually a track that ranked pretty close to the very bottom at first but was the best song in its block a couple of times which let it ride up a little higher.

Sleepland was my least favorite nomination too but I still like it well enough. It's like a calming lullaby or something, which is nice to listen to but ultimately nothing special. Still, it's one of the few impressive things to come out of the endearing mess that is Mrchen Mdchen so I figured I'd give it a chance.

Quite frankly I dont think the accompanying vocals really work in this song since I dont really like either set of vocals to begin with. I guess the backing track is okay, but its not like I was blown away by that either.

The pretty good solo aside this was decent, but there is not enough going on with the instrumentals imo to really bring this song really any higher than meh. Like I want the feel of a full rock set with songs like this, and even though its like there its like one of the most disappointing ones ever.

I liked this song like for the first minute or so but it kind of wore off on me. I dont think the vocalist is good enough to really maintain the song for as long as shes trying to, or I should say, she sounds kind of whiney imo and not cute like. Like I dont think the autotune (Im assuming thats whats happening here) is not doing her a lot of favors. The backing track is also not interesting enough to carry her either.

This is a song I cant really bring myself to like. I can tell its trying for this like epic type feel to it, but it just doesnt have that oomph needed to really make it that far. Im also ignoring the talky part, something I dont like. There are like glimpses of a pretty good song here, but like just when I think they are going to do something great they like have the most moderate follow up to the build up ever.

This is a case where I think the song does what it wants to fairly well but I find the actual arrangement and complexity level of the piece somewhat boring. Not to say that simple songs overall cant succeed, but its also hurt by the fact I didnt really enjoy this that much.

Okay so, this one. I think its a pretty competent track but I just dont really care for it. Its probably that the lyrics just sound so uninspired? Like I have no clue what hes even saying (and I like a lot of songs with the worst lyrics imaginable) but at least when those are song they kind of sound like there was artistic merit put into singing them and I dont get that same feeling here.

So, right off, this song is not as good as Sh0ut or Gravity Well. Those songs just have addicting choruses and excellent timing of their big parts. This, imo, just has too many low key parts strung together. Its like a rejected sample mix.

I can see how some people would really like this song, but this is like a little too old fashioned sounding to me. I enjoy things that have like older elements of stuff infused with it, but this is 100% need to be in the mood type music for me and Im rarely ever going to be in the mood.

Man this song starts off sound cool and like something great is going to follow. But it doesnt really go anywhere unfortunately. I guess toss this into the sounds cool and stuff, but quickly loses appeal as the song goes on type deal.

So at a point I was like this song is pretty good but let me go back to make sure and like the more I listened to it the more bored I got overall. I think the song had some pretty good instrumental highlights, but the vocals are so dull. This is a song that was hurt quite a lot by the ranking system as it was a few spots higher originally.

the bad singing is intentional yeah. even the third one is "good" but in an amateurish way. since these are supposed to be representations of the characters singing, and there's no reason why any of the characters from the show should be good at singing. a weird choice but something I thought was very unique and cool.

I thought Id like this more than I did. I just thought the song sounded a little messy overall and kind of lacked the direction it needed. Like the song was too all over the place without any real connector for the parts it was doing.

Sometimes the vocalist sounds great here but other times it sounds like shes out of her range where Id say she should be. This would not be a huge issue but it seems like the way the song is mixed that they put a big emphasis on her and not the backing track, which I would not consider to be amazing either. So what results is a song that sound great sometimes and almost painful at other times but without something to pull the bad spots out.

This is more a song that has fairly good pacing but is just boring overall. The vocals are not quite good enough to carry the song and it relies way too much on the same sequences running over and over again. My original listen was like, man that drummer needs to calm down, but after a couple of more I dont think its that bad. Like aside from the solo it feels like a song that was 100% made using software running on repeat rather than an actual group doing it.

So for this song I had to make sure that this was actually the full version, and since I cant find one with lyrics that is actually longer this is probably the entire song or the full version is just not released. So this technically qualifies for the list I guess. That said, it being short undoubtedly really hurts it because the non vocal version that was just a little longer would have done better. That said I did enjoy basically the entire short segment, but it doesnt leave any real lasting impression.

So this like Engrish is almost good enough to pass, but its like not quite there. I think this is a decent song, and I always liked it after watching PP, but mostly because I also really liked the cute animation that went along with it.
