Sonic is 99.999% considering they're still doing Mario and Sonic games. Pac-Man is obvious since Namco's likely working on the game. Mega Man and Ryu are also very likely since Capcom and Nintendo have a good relationship. Bayonetta will likely be in to promote Bayonetta 3.

I think Cloud's the only iffy one (besides Snake) since Square was really picky with what they limited the FF universe to (2 songs, only Cloud trophies and Chocobo Mii outfits.)

Splatoon 2 came out two years after the original.

That said, Smash games have been really far apart, but the fact that Deluxe version HASN'T appeared until now is what led me to think they weren't working on one and were just doing a brand new game instead. As to why it's coming out sooner than usual:

- It's possibly a bit scaled back. No big story mode or dual versions should really help cut down on development time.
- The Switch isn't a big leap from Wii U anyway. You might say the same about going from Wii to Wii U, but even Brawl > Wii U had to deal with going into HD which always causes problems.
- It's probably going to be delayed. It's Smash Bros., for christ's sakes of course it's going to get delayed.

Its tough to say anything definitive, because we dont even know who is directing it or working on it. Sakurai could be in a supervisory role this time around, instead of being the Director. They could also be reusing a lot of their work from Smash 4.

Im fine either way! If its Smash Deluxe or Smash 4, its good to have one on the Switch. And there will be enough new to be exciting, no matter what it is.

Smash 4 with all DLC, a handful of new characters and stages and a single players mode would probably be enough to satisfy most fans.

I think the most effective way to hype a game is to minimize the amount of time people have to wait between announcement and release. The need to hype for a 1+ years is antiquated, if anything.

Smash 4 would mean I don't have to worry about getting Shulk back

but this could definitely be Smash 5 and I'll still get hyped for that too... in a way that will tear at my emotions for months until Shulk is revealed again

Ice Climbers probably won't be hindered by 3DS's limitations anymore so it's in the running again

I don't see Snake coming back after all that's happened to Kojima. His friendship with Sakurai is the only reason he got in the first time.

There's no pessimism at all in thinking it's a port unless you don't like 4. The pessimism is that it will run at 20fps 720p in docked mode. And you'll have to rebuy all your DLC.

I mean, take MP4 for example. They gave a logo nearly a year ago and no new info has been shown. Hype's died down quite a bit now, so we're probably going to see something at E3. That rebuilds the initial hype and adds a new level of hype because now there's more to talk about.

Even if it is a new game, I highly doubt it's gonna be from the ground up. They're likely going to build from Smash 4, especially if they're aiming for the 2018 release.
