Year of the Raven is the next standard season.

The new expansion has yet to be announced, but we got hall of fame announcements!

Ice Block
Coldlight Oracle
Molten Giant (they un-nerfed it)

They will not be missed. Ice Block is great. I feel like they could have done more though.

All quests will reward at least 50 gold, and the requirements on many of them have been changed to make them quicker to complete.

They are adding a tournament mode that allows you to create custom tournaments.

New Druid hero: Lunara - Win 10 games after the expansion hits.

Moving Molten Giant to the Hall of Fame allows us to revert it to its original mana cost, giving players a chance to experiment with decks featuring Molten Giants in the Wild format.

Except no one's going to ever experiment with it when the Naga Sea Witch works as it does.

The rest of the stuff in that blog post was fine though. The new hero seems pretty neat, I'm glad they're adding new races.

An interesting choice of wording in the hall of fame section. It mentions that you'll receive dust for the cards as if you disenchanted them. Does that mean we won't be getting full dust refunds like we did with the last hall of fame rotation?

I'm sure we'll be getting full dust from the rotation and full dust if you decide to disenchant just like Sylv and Rag.

After reading the reasoning behind Coldlight I guess I can get on board but I still don't like the idea that some classes just don't have card draw and that's part of their identity.

Ice Block was inevitable, but I feel like they'll eventually need to give Mage another card or two for standard. Half the hall of fame is going to be Mage cards and neutral cards played frequently by Mages in a couple of years.

And it's too bad Naga is cancer or Molten Giant would be playable again.

ice block being gone is good, although sad in a way. I kinda like playing wild from time to time and I'd rather ice block just get nerfed rather than moved. now I feel as if I have to play standard if I don't want to deal with ice block.

coldlight is fine. I don't think the card is all powerful but the reasoning they gave makes sense. and it's a card that finds its way into basically every single type of mill deck. it will be interesting to see if people can come up with new ideas for mill strategies that don't use the coldlight orcale.

molten giant is the most interesting. is this the first time a hearthstone card has ever been buffed? I remember this coming up a lot, relating to how they don't nerf cards often enough and they never buff cards but I don't know how literal that is. in this case it's really just undoing a nerf but that's still super interesting.

easier quests is awesome.

in game tournaments... I suspect other people will care about this way more than I do.

lunara looks interesting. still waiting on hero representation from a bunch of other races before they start adding stuff like this but well the HS team is just going to do whatever they want to do.

Really surprised by those HoF choices. Not Ice Block, obviously. And I like the change they made to Molten Giant, albeit at least one year later than it should have been made. But I'm a little perplexed by Coldlight being the third entry, and that there weren't any other choices made.

Someone's going to have to explain what Brode means by limiting interactivity with battlecries, because I'm not really seeing it. I mean, we already have that shaman card, Murmuring Elemental, which could double up the draws if we're looking at mill. The only thing I see is that maybe they're making a deck that focuses exclusively on cheap, powerful battlecries that outright win the game for you (which would be a Really Bad Idea) and they want to ensure that deck doesn't have an easy way to fuel its draw engine.

I mean, I get why coldlight might be removed. It's a neutral Arcane Intellect (that can be run in addition to AI) to cycle a deck swiftly for combo purposes. However, the capacity to mill a control opponent is also sometimes the only way to defeat it -- look at Raza priest. Being able to force your opponent to draw...well, it's frustrating when it hits you, but it's also a very powerful counter to some dominant strategies.

Anyway, I guess there aren't too many cards that need to be ushered out, but I really expected Alexstrazsa to be on that list.

Well I mean it doesn't feel very good having your Barnes burned in spell hunter so they had to nerf that card. I mean could you imagine having your Barnes get milled before you can pull out your Y'Shaarj on turn 4? There's no counter play to that situation for you!

Since the game came out of beta, yes.

There's a good reason why they don't buff cards -- it isn't worth the development time. If a card is too strong, it affects the meta in a negative way and needs to be fixed. If a card is too weak, it...occasionally makes your arena picks and randomized effects less good. But it seldom actively hurts anything. OTOH, if they buff it, that requires a load of playtesting and analysis for a card that either (a) still doesn't see play or (b) will possibly be too strong and need to be tuned back down.

As such, I expect that nerf reversion is the only situation where you will see this happen, and that will be extremely rare on its own.

No, that's exactly it. Brann + Coldlight is a very powerful combo in mill decks. Especially if it's followed up by shadowcasters or something. If they want to make more effects that affect battlecries, they have to keep looking at Coldlight to see if it breaks mill decks in Standard.

Also since people mention counterplay, it should also be mentioned that it's very hard to counterplay against mill decks unless your deck is made of very cheap cards to dump your hand and kill the mill deck quickly. If there's a very powerful mill strategy, it could potentially lead to a Quest Rogue situation where it just eats slow decks alive and forces an aggressive meta shift.

Wild should be "interesting" if mill gets better. Also Molten Giant nerf = Naga Sea Witch buff???

Alright so I've started playing this game again and need some help. Having not played since Mean Streets of Gaz getting a deck made for constructed that isn't trash is going to be a little hard so what is a decent constructed deck that isn't super expensive. Mostly looking for something to do when I don't feel like grinding it out in arena.

Also with the current arena being wild have people been finding it easier than normal? Before I quit my average was like 6 or so wins but like I've done 4 since coming back and all have been at least 7 with not really knowing a lot of the new cards. Not sure if I'm just getting insanely lucky or if the level of arena has gone down.

Dude Paladin is maybe the best deck in the game and has one legendary (Sunkeeper Tarim, nearly auto include in paladin) and epic Call to Arms but also a ton of rares that you'll probably have to craft:
https://hsreplay.net/decks/vBaGesUbXKovkGPIcPLurf/

Secret Mage is another tier 1/2 deck but you'll have to craft Aluneth, which only goes in aggro mages, as well as epic Primordial Glyphs (but they are auto include in mage decks now) and some classic epics if you don't have them
https://hsreplay.net/decks/cU53G61xmw1oCzD7bHsz1/

Zoo is still pretty good and will probably be the cheapest. There are some builds like this one that require no epics and only one legendary (Bloodreaver Gul'dan, which is a near auto include in Warlock now, but which you can probably still play the deck without)

I wouldn't go nuts on crafting because rotation is happening soon, but all three above decks are good options. Face Hunter is always an option as well. And I guess speaking of rotation, if you have any interest at all in Wild, Secret Mage is basically the same in both formats, you just jam 4 commons in somewhere (Mad Scientist and Forgotten Torch).

Also make sure to get your freebies. You should automatically get a free legendary weapon from Kobolds, you can get a free Death Knight by doing the Frozen Throne solo adventure intro, and opening 10 packs of a set you haven't opened before now automatically gets you a legendary.

Ok so first time using the card as I drafted it in Arena. What gives with Lesser Pearl Spellstone? Because it not upgrading when I thought it would most certainly just cost me a game.

It didn't upgrade off killing a Zombie Chow and it didn't upgrade off Benevolent Djinn triggering. So what the fuck does cause it to upgrade?

also, just finished my first run, playing Secret Mage. 12 and 2 bay-bee!

One loss was in the mirror (forgot to play around Duplicate, whoops), one loss was to a Giants Warlock that was super close (and I actually beat him in a rematch for my 11th win, natch). Final gatekeeper was a slower Secret Mage that fell behind and scooped.

I'm 2-1 so far. Lost to Reno Quest Priest and beat two Secret Mages. The Secret Mages must have had bad draws because my deck is slow as molasses and I don't think I was ever in danger of losing to either of them at any point.

One of them apparently didn't have Aluneth because they were running Jeeves.

Edit: My last second decision to run Spellbreaker instead of Eater of Secrets seems like it's going to be a mistake if Secret Mage is this rampant.
