124.Monopoly (WhiteLens)
m7KTCAh

To be honest, Monopoly is probably the only game on this list I outright hate. I havent played it in years on purpose. Im not sure Ive ever legitimately finished a game of Monopoly. Its on my personal banned games list. If someone were to ask me to play Monopoly, I would feign illness or punch them in the face, whichever is easier. Sure, its fun enough the first few times around the board when everythings still open, buying railroads, getting Chance cards, and passing Go for a free 200 bucks.

However, once the properties start getting bought up, its a slow descent into madness (and I emphasize slow because this game takes forever if you dont cut corners) as you keep finding yourself in jail, desperately trying to roll two of the same number, and repeatedly cursing your luck because you could never land on Park Place or Boardwalk when no one owned them, but you land on one of them every single time around the board once someone else owns them. And if someone claims the dog piece before I can, heaven help you, because youve taken my one source of joy in this game other than the game giving me hope that if Pennybags can finish second in a beauty pageant, maybe I could, too. Id rather go bankrupt in real life than play an entire game of Monopoly. Im pretty sure I read a statistic somewhere that Monopoly is a top 5 cause of divorce in America, so please, protect your families and never play this game again.

I don't hate Monopoly, but I do hate how there are so many freaking themed boards for it. It's the same damn game every time no matter if its the Simpsons, Game of Thrones, Nintendo, Your Favorite Sports Team, it's the same mechanics, the same lots, the same cards, the same gameplay except with different pieces and a different coat of paint. Risk can have different maps or mission-based gameplay; Trivial Pursuit has different questions and knowledge; but there's zero reason to have more than one Monopoly board game, if you even need one in the first place.

Least Favorite? It's tough because there's a lot I haven't played in so long, and the ones I do get frustrated with are probably because I suck at them and not to do with the games themselves. If Operation counts, then probably that.

123.Shaq Fu (handsomeboy2012)
ZELmQsY

If youre expecting an in-depth analysis of Shaq Fus mechanics, youve come to the wrong place! My best friend and I rented this one time just for the heck of it. His parents owned a video rental store, so he could rent stuff for free, so there was no risk if we got a bad game. The game has become infamous for being a terrible game, and while it certainly IS a bad game, I wouldnt say I hate it. Bad games are more enjoyable when you play together with a friend and you can just laugh at how stupid it is. It was like doing LPs before there were LPs. Perhaps the weirdest thing is how close both characters stand to each other before a round starts. Like, you dont even need to move in to hit the opponent. Also, Shaq is so tall that his attacks can literally whiff on characters even when theyre not ducking.

By the way, this game actually has a story mode! Shaq randomly stumbles upon a kung fu dojo with conveniently located Pepsi logos on the screen, and hes sent to save some random kid in an alternate dimension or something, which explains why all the other characters in this game arent fellow NBA stars. However, a fighting game with something like Shaq vs. Scottie Pippen wouldve been a lot more awesome because theres some novelty in that, at least. Shaqs early career choices outside of basketball were certainly strange. I remember watching Kazaam as a kid, too. I wonder which project he regrets more. Probably Kazaam because he actually had to be there in person to shoot that movie. Actually, wasnt Steel supposed to be even worse than Kazaam? Has he played a character other than himself on TV or in a movie since then?

I bought Jump All-Stars Victory Vs+ at full price, expecting it to not be worth the money really but that playing a 3D arena fighter with a mash up of Shonen Jump characters to be too novel to pass up.

I had no expectations, and yet I was disappointed immensely.

122. Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (Axl_Rose_85)
7KDa9k0

I was a huge Mortal Kombat fan growing up, and Sub-Zero was my favorite MK character, so when I heard he was getting his own game, I was pretty excited. Plus, I love sidescrolling beat-em-ups, so I thought this had the potential to be a good hybrid! I could not have been more wrong. Again, it's been so long since I last played this game, so if you want me to give in-depth analysis about why it's bad, I'm not going to be able to satisfy your urges! They make a big deal about letting you explore Sub-Zero's backstory and even getting to kill Scorpion, but the graphics and animations kinda take you out of it, which is weird because Mortal Kombat was considered to be "cutting edge" with its aesthetics back in the day with realistic-looking characters. The game does have a lot of FMVs that are dated in that hilarious early PS1 way. I remember the game being hard in the way it would bum rush you with waves of enemies, but a lot of beat-em-ups were that way. It just didn't feel good to play because it still used fighting game mechanics despite the genre change. Basically, it was the original Subspace Emissary, where the game maintains Brawl's fighting game mechanics and makes you use them in a sidescroller.

The strange thing is that Midway didn't disavow all knowledge of this game despite how much it flopped, but it actually brought back Quan Chi and Shinnok for Mortal Kombat 4 and beyond. I don't even like Quan Chi, but a lot of people do, so I guess it was a smart move to take what actually did work from that game and implement it into the main series. Or maybe it's a testament that they don't learn from their mistakes because they actually tried to make another Mythologies type game with Shaolin Monks. I never played that one though, so maybe it was playable. I kinda doubt it though, because there was a big gap between MK4 and MK9 where most of the games were bad. I'm glad the series has been rejuvenated though, especially with their amazing story modes. I wish more games were willing to take the risks with their stories that Mortal Kombat does because they were never afraid to change the status quo or shake up the canon. Of course, you have to deal with the backlash from the fans who don't like it when you change stuff, but MK has shown it can work!

Bonus Question: What is your least favorite fighting game?

Justice League Task Force (SNES). Fastest turnaround on a game from open to trade-in. Christmas present, about an hour of attempted gameplay, and then sold to Funcoland the very next day. Swore off buying any DC comics for years in large part because of this game.

Bonus Question: What is the most disappointed you have ever been by a game?

There have definitely been a number over the years. Beyond Good & Evil is the most recent in many of the same ways Twilight Princess was a big disappointment, but it wasn't a bad experience in the least. Punch Club seemed like it would be fun, but quickly turned into a horribly mismanaged grind with bad mechanics. And I have yet to play FFXIII, FFXV, and MGSV to rule on those, but since my expectations are pretty tempered I don't think they'll be too bad.

Nothing really jumps to mind as 'most.'

There was this PS1 game called Pokemon Adventure with the picture of Ash and Pikachu on its cover. My friend back in junior high was really excited because he loved Pokemon. I knew though that there wasn't any PS1 Pokemon game, but hey we gave it a test at the store to see what it was and it was this bootleg platforming with eyebleedingly bad graphics and it was hilarious.

121.Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) (handsomeboy2012)
V1FMLHN

Perhaps no game has wounded me with its badness more than Sonic 2006 has. I remember seeing that image I posted back when they announced the game and being floored by it. It looked so good. I was convinced this game would be good, even as skepticism abounded and poor reviews poured in. I paid full price for this game at launch. If I were to list that on some sort of financial report, I wouldn't blame anybody who said I shouldn't be trusted with money ever again. There are parts of this game that are enjoyable, too, which only makes it worse. Some of the Sonic segments can be fun, but on the other hand, those Mach Speed sections are some of the most frustrating things in the entire series. It's a good idea that's ruined by the notoriously wanky 3D Sonic engines. Shadow is decent to play as, but I don't care about the cars and weapons parts of it. Silver is rough because he's slow and that aforementioned wanky engine can be annoying for a character whose primary mechanic is moving and throwing stuff around. Silver is also the most annoying boss in the game. If you've played the game, IT'S NO USE has probably been irretrievably hammered into your subconscious. Even if you by some unfortunate happenstance have amnesia some day, that sound clip is one of the things you will retain.

However, the worst part of the game is trying to navigate the hub because the loading times are overwhelming, especially if you have to do a quest in town. It basically goes like this:

*Accept quest from NPC*
*Now Loading*
*NPC says one line about the quest*
*Now More Loading*

Oh, and of course, there's more loading after the quest, succeed or fail, so you better hope you don't mess up and have to do that all over again. If you do mess up, then cross your fingers that you get stuck on a quest that uses that song that's a straight up ripoff of Flash Man's Mega Man 2 theme because that song is pretty rad.

I wonder if at some point Sega realized the game they were about to release was bad because Sonic 2006's own ending completely retcons it from existence. Oh well, it wasn't all bad. At least we got that amazing Pokecapn LP out of it.

120.Tic-Tac-Toe (Xeybozn)
i2GxKsm

Tic-Tac-Toe is an okay game, but it's rather limited in its utility unless you put celebrities in the squares or something like that. You have to mix up the formula by making it something where you don't alternate turns straight up. I used to play human tic-tac-toe with the kids at church where I would ask questions, and if you got the question right, you got a spot on the board, but if you got it wrong, the other team can answer your question and steal a turn. It definitely amps up the dramatic tension. However, Xeybozn didn't nominate Tic-Tac-Toe spinoffs. He nominated the original. The only real satisfaction I get out of playing Tic-Tac-Toe anymore is punking those poor suckers who don't realize the smart move is to start on the corners, not in the middle. Plus, I don't like playing any game where a tie is a common outcome. Ties are for Europeans, not Americans. Also, I always have to be the X. I ain't no O, yo.

119. Musashi: Samurai Legend (AxemRedRanger)
mjQRMwG

Yeah, I know that's the wrong game, but finding good images for the actual game is hard, which is a very fitting referendum on Musashi: Samurai Legend. This game came and went with no fanfare. Now I love Brave Fencer Musashi. It's such a quirky, charming game. I think it might have been Square's first foray into voice acting, and they got some legit VAs for it, like Steve Blum. It was the kind of game that I didn't think would ever get a sequel, so when this game came out seven years later, I was pleasantly surprised...until I played it. The gameplay actually isn't too bad. They bring back the Fusion system and it makes for some good variety. It's just everything else isn't very good. The world just doesn't have the same level of charm as the original. Like, I can't tell you who any of the other characters in this game were. The art style is unappealing. Musashi's new design is terrible.

Out of all its problems, the writing and the voice acting might be the worst part. Like, I am generally forgiving when it comes to bad voice acting. It takes a special level of bad for me to want to drop a game because of it, and we're not talking Chaos Wars' brand of "so bad it's good." It's just bad, Musashi in particular, which is a shame because he's who you hear the most, naturally. Musashi is voiced by a girl who's trying to sound like a boy, and that's exactly how it comes across. Like, if I were to try to sound like a girl, it would have the same effect because you would know that I'm a guy trying to sound like a girl. You would never be convinced that I were a girl if I tried to deceive you with an impression. It's very common for women to voice prepubescent boys because of the higher pitch of their voices, but it's rare for you to realize it in the moment. Also, if you want an example of how bad the writing is, there's a character named Don Keecrup or something like that, and the running gag is that Musashi keeps calling him Donkey Crap. You can't make this up, folks.

So yeah, if you're a fan of Brave Fencer Musashi and you're wondering if this is worth playing, I can't recommend it to you. It doesn't capture any of the essence of the original.

Bonus Question: What is the most disappointed you have been by a sequel?

I actually played Shaq Fu back in the day and didn't think it was that bad? Granted, I probably only played it twenty minutes, but worst game ever seems kinda harsh.

Most disappointing game: FFXV
Worst game I paid full price for: FFXV
Most disappointing sequel: FFXV

Don't think anything else really comes close...? I bought a PS4 for FFXV and didn't even finish the game for half a year. XIII was pretty disappointing in some ways, but it at least had parts I loved (especially dat soundtrack). XV...didn't.

...oh! Actually! Most disappointing sequel might go to Umineko 6. Again, it had some saving graces, so probably not quite as bad as XV, but holy shit the bad parts were so bad. Why does Featherine exist

I don't think it's the worst game ever either!

Nobody nominated a game I actually hate other than Monopoly. Shaq Fu is bad, but it's not a "ugh this is the worst" kind of bad.

also FFXV and Umineko Episode 6 are both great

I nominated Shaq Fu and Sonic 06 just for the heck of it but Monopoly does deserve last place.

As a kid I used to play Monopoly with my family only for everyone to get bored in about an hour and just abandon the game. Never got to the part where everyone goes at each other's throats. I don't hate it but I really don't want to play it anymore.

118. Star Fox Adventures (NBIceman)
sKlmnS2

I wouldn't really consider this a bad game, necessarily. It looks great, and the environments are pretty cool. I've loved dinosaurs since I was a kid, so the concept appealed to me. I like Star Fox in general, which is why I got this game in the first place. This wasn't even supposed to be a Star Fox game originally, in fact. They changed it into one partway through. I guess my problem was that the combat wasn't very fun, and it just got too repetitive. Some of the missions could be really frustrating. Then they did a complete retread at the end with Andross, which was kinda lame. The original characters weren't really any good either. Tricky in particular got annoying after a while. A good atmosphere goes a long way for me, but it can't carry the whole experience alone. I don't think I've played another Star Fox game since this one either. Maybe if I gave it another shot, it'd go up in my estimation since I can't really pinpoint any one terrible thing. I just didn't enjoy it. I wouldn't stop anyone from trying to play it though.

Perhaps the biggest problem is that it's another game with the acronym SFA! Thankfully, this game is rarely talked about, so I guess we don't have to worry about any sort of confusion, but still, Street Fighter Alpha had it first! There are too many series that can be abbreviated SF as it is! Next thing you know, there will be a Shining Force or Syphon Filter game out there that'll throw an A on the end, and everything will just descend into chaos! Actually, maybe not. When's the last time either of those series had a game?

117. Charades (Raka_Putra)
M5SI9Yd

I thought about doing this entire writeup as a charade, but I realized the payoff wouldn't be worth the effort. Plus, I'm terrible at Charades, hence the low ranking. I'm terrible at any sort of game where you have to act something out or draw something without being able to talk. I can never figure out what to do, and I spend half the time just fumbling around trying to come up with something someone might get. It might be a combination of overthinking it and being a bit too self-conscious, I guess. I don't like doing things I'm bad at, even if it results in laughs. I don't know that I'd mind Charades as much if I could just guess all the time, but man, I don't like acting anything out. I'm even worse at Pictionary because I'm a terrible drawer. I dread it every time it's my turn to draw.

But yeah, I can see the appeal in Charades, and it can be funny. It's just not for me, or at least one half of the game isn't for me. I'm actually fairly good at guessing with these sorts of games, but if I'm going to play a guessing game, I'd much rather play something else entirely. I'll still take Charades over Pictionary any day though!

Aww, as an hobbyist actor I love Charades, but I can understand the reluctance. Glad you can enjoy at least half the game, which I'm sure is more than what you can say about some of the lower-ranking games.

Or maybe it's a testament that they don't learn from their mistakes because they actually tried to make another Mythologies type game with Shaolin Monks.

Hey Shaolin Monks is a good game. Don't compare it to the steaming pile of junk that is Mythologies.

Most disappointing sequel: FFXV

How would that even be considered a sequel?

No one in their right mind would call it a sequel to FFXIV in the first place, which is an MMORPG.

It's not like it's X-2, XIII-2, LR: FFXIII, or After Years.

Probably Breath of the Wild? Not because I disliked it, but because massive hype and my love for the franchise had me expecting a masterpiece. Just got a decent game.

Tag.

I have several fond memories of playing Monopoly with my grandfather as a child, but a lot of that is just because he was a total ham. I don't think most of our games properly finished.

That might also be the most I've ever seen someone talk about Tic Tac Toe, for obvious reasons

Would have to think about some of the questions a bit, but the most disappointing sequel for me was Trails of Cold Steel II - it's still a very good game, but considering the quality gap between TitS FC and SC, it only being about as good as the first was a big letdown.

Yeah, I feel like Monopoly can be okay as long as no one takes it seriously and there's no real pressure to actually finish the game. Those two traits rarely coincide though.
