119. Musashi: Samurai Legend (AxemRedRanger)
mjQRMwG

Yeah, I know that's the wrong game, but finding good images for the actual game is hard, which is a very fitting referendum on Musashi: Samurai Legend. This game came and went with no fanfare. Now I love Brave Fencer Musashi. It's such a quirky, charming game. I think it might have been Square's first foray into voice acting, and they got some legit VAs for it, like Steve Blum. It was the kind of game that I didn't think would ever get a sequel, so when this game came out seven years later, I was pleasantly surprised...until I played it. The gameplay actually isn't too bad. They bring back the Fusion system and it makes for some good variety. It's just everything else isn't very good. The world just doesn't have the same level of charm as the original. Like, I can't tell you who any of the other characters in this game were. The art style is unappealing. Musashi's new design is terrible.

Out of all its problems, the writing and the voice acting might be the worst part. Like, I am generally forgiving when it comes to bad voice acting. It takes a special level of bad for me to want to drop a game because of it, and we're not talking Chaos Wars' brand of "so bad it's good." It's just bad, Musashi in particular, which is a shame because he's who you hear the most, naturally. Musashi is voiced by a girl who's trying to sound like a boy, and that's exactly how it comes across. Like, if I were to try to sound like a girl, it would have the same effect because you would know that I'm a guy trying to sound like a girl. You would never be convinced that I were a girl if I tried to deceive you with an impression. It's very common for women to voice prepubescent boys because of the higher pitch of their voices, but it's rare for you to realize it in the moment. Also, if you want an example of how bad the writing is, there's a character named Don Keecrup or something like that, and the running gag is that Musashi keeps calling him Donkey Crap. You can't make this up, folks.

So yeah, if you're a fan of Brave Fencer Musashi and you're wondering if this is worth playing, I can't recommend it to you. It doesn't capture any of the essence of the original.

Bonus Question: What is the most disappointed you have been by a sequel?
