A few questions:

1. I'm 99% sure they're ineligible, but since I never actually asked: Do all the songs by The Megas count as covers and are they banned as a result? There's a decent argument in their favor: They change the songs around, use actual instruments, add lyrics & a plot, and their better songs work even without the context of the games the music came from.

On the other hand, they're still easily recognizable as Mega Man songs and I can't quite get an argument that allows them without also allowing Weird Al who you explicitly banned back at the start of this. So...pretty sure I know what the ruling is, but I have to ask in case I can sneak one of their songs in at the last minute.

2.I believe you mentioned something that there could be exceptions for cover songs if the original song isn't allowed for some reason? Now I don't want to nominate it, but doesn't this loophole allow the Weird Al cover of the "George of the Jungle" theme to be nominated?

George of the Jungle came out in '67, so it's obviously excluded ; Weird Al usually does parodies of songs from time periods covered in this topic, so they're excluded ; yet, through the magic of oddly specific loopholes, the two combined to form probably the only Weird Al song that could sneak in.

I just want to take a moment and let that sink in: A children's cartoon came out in the 60s ; almost two decades later, Weird Al's label demanded he make a "normal" cover, so he added the show's theme specifically to spite everyone ; three decades after that, this topic was created and I subjected us all to this inane conversation. It's beautiful, in a way, this stupid song transcending the generations and I think we should all pause and reflect on everything in the history of the universe that led to this moment.

...of course the song wouldn't even be in my top ten joke noms from the 80's, I just really wanted to share that story.

3.Would you resent me adding a fourth Protomen song? Because I've regretted picking "This City Made Us" instead of "Hold Back the Night" for a solid month now and, to be quite honest, The Megas and The Protomen are the only two current bands I listen to which makes it hard to nominate 10's songs that aren't from one of them.

If they have anything original sure they count. If they cover a song that is from the 60's and are the earliest covers in the decades I am requesting then they are fine also. Even though I have this rule I think I have 2 songs from my list that I have made exceptions of so this late in the nomination phase I might bend slightly on the rule. If you have a particular song you want me to consider just nominate it anyway and I'll let you know if it can be made an exception as well.

I didn't explicitly ban Weird Al. In fact there are a couple of his songs on the list since he has made several original songs on his own. The reason most of his stuff is denied though is done so under the limitation of parodies since most of the stuff he has 'covered' falls inside the last 50 years.

2.I believe you mentioned something that there could be exceptions for cover songs if the original song isn't allowed for some reason? Now I don't want to nominate it, but doesn't this loophole allow the Weird Al cover of the "George of the Jungle" theme to be nominated?

It would allow the cover from Weird Al if it is the earliest cover inside the last 50 years.

George of the Jungle came out in '67, so it's obviously excluded ; Weird Al usually does parodies of songs from time periods covered in this topic, so they're excluded ; yet, through the magic of oddly specific loopholes, the two combined to form probably the only Weird Al song that could sneak in.

Nominate what you have and I'll take a look. A bunch of that stuff is sort of original on it's own as you say because of the songs being more or less 're-imagined' and not so much covered or parodied. That may actually be the line I draw in the sand in your case here since the bands are unique in that way.

Actually yes it is. Thanks for pointing that out. (I think I added it to the cutting room floor pile before you had made your nomination but forgot to remove it. It was one of the last songs I had added to my initial compilation of songs.)

As I said before though the cut songs were not cut for any specific reason other than list overflow.

I'm keeping as much of the list a secret as possible so I can only tell you if a song is denied after you nominate it. I can however post the list of songs that have been nominated by everyone here so far. (And in nominated order I think.. from the most recent down to the earliest nomination)

If they have anything original sure they count. If they cover a song that is from the 60's and are the earliest covers in the decades I am requesting then they are fine also.

As far as I'm aware, the only completely original song they did was a surprisingly dramatic song about air fresheners. Mostly they take songs from the first three Mega Man games (though they did release some other covers), remix them, add lyrics, blah blah blah. My favorite song of theirs is probably Gamma Unchained:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OO8To_XZsFE" data-time="

Which, you of all people, will note is pretty much just "Wily Stage 1 from Mega Man 3, albeit with lyrics and actual instruments"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzr37-SZmfM" data-time="

The question is if all their additions and changes is enough to get around the "no cover" rule. If I could get away with it, I'd either go with Gamma Unchained (favorite song is favorite song) or..Bloody Tears from when they briefly covered some Castlevania music:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V08epMK0ia4" data-time="

If only because the topic of Castlevania music has never come up in our conversations and I suspect you're less likely to immediately recognize it. I know I don't know enough about Castlevania music to guess which track it is; it's about Simon's Quest, so I figure it's from that game, but I've never cared to research it.

Definitely, one of my favorite albums...granted I don't listen to many albums, but still; I don't think there's a bad song on the entire album. I'm not a big fan of "You've Sparked a War", but even that isn't bad... just not funny like Top Man or Magnet Man, nor is it as dramatic as Gamma Unchained or "I Want To Be The One (To Watch You Die)".

EDIT: Messed up that title, the parenthesis go the other way--"(I Want to be The One) To Watch You Die".

I've never gotten into it; the first two songs are basically the only way they could continue from the ending to the second album, then it's inexplicably followed by two comedy tracks (which I love so very much)

Then Sparked a War

Then we get "Walk Away From Light", which is another song I love; actually sampling the original 8-bit song and I'm a sucker for villains trying to turn the hero to the darkside.

Gamma Unchained is the song I liked enough to get into The Megas and track down the rest of the album, so it has a very special place in my heart.

Watch You Die is probably the most important song on the album, with History Repeating Red opening with Mega Man's reaction to it.

Continue is...a nice ending theme, I guess? Nice way to end the album, but not my favorite.

Sparked a War has always just kinda been there as far as I'm concerned; I don't skip the song or anything, it's just like "yes, this means Snake Man's about to start" tends to be my reaction to it.

As soon as I decide to look up Castlevania 2 on Wikipedia:

The game's soundtrack was composed by Kenichi Matsubara. Of note is Bloody Tears, which has since became a recurring song in the Castlevania franchise.

...Okay, so maybe it was easier to find out where Bloody Tears came from than I expected.

Let's try throwing these nominations at the second open set of songs and see if any of them stick.

80s

Band: Survivor
Song Name: Burning Heart
You tube Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc71KZG87X4" data-time="

I held off nominating this one because I used it at someone else's music ranking topic and I wouldn't be surprised if it was on the list, but right now I feel like complaining that this song is obviously better than Eye of the Tiger and that I'm slightly bitter it never gets enough respect.

...that is way too blunt, but I'm way too tired to care right now. @.@

90s

Band: TJ Davis
Song Name: Diamond in the Sky (Radiant Emerald)
You tube Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zex_DZcEn4o" data-time="

I know I shouldn't nominate a game song, but you did say there would be exceptions if the song was released on an album: http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Sonic_R_(album)

Between my massive nostalgia for Sonic R and this song never getting attention (Can You Feel the Sunshine and Super Sonic Racing are the only two tracks I ever see anyone mention), and me being too tired to listen to common sense... I'll throw it out, see if it gets approved.

Always hated doing the final stage as Super Sonic as it would replace this song with Super Sonic Racing. Blech.

FUTURE SPOILERS: Remember how I mentioned I had a dream about that Cher's song placement? It was one placement ahead of a 90s videogame song...

...granted it was a different song (Goldenrod City theme to be specific), but hey, close enough. ...wait, Pokemon Gold was 2001? Never trust release dates from dreams of alternate futures...

...and yes, I suppose I could have forced this song into VGMC's auto-in bracket instead of The Smurfs, but I was really into Game Boy music at that exact moment. Also I just really wanted to get that one Smurfs song in on behalf of...whoever it was that originally nominated it, I don't honestly recall and don't feel like looking it up. Also, why am I still talking? I don't...think I'm even remotely on whatever topic I started on...

10s

Band: The Megas
Song: Bloody Tears
You tube Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V08epMK0ia4" data-time="

Band: The Protomen
Song: Hold Back the Night
You tube Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apaJ3A56XbM" data-time="

Bloody Tears I covered above; decided I'd rather try backing something non-Mega Man related. It's easier to ask for an exception if it's not literally a different version of a song from your last music related topic. (Seriously though, listen to their History Repeating albums sometime, they're both amazing).

Hold Back the Night is yet another Protomen track, but this one has the female singer as the lead so it stands out from the other three I nominated. It's...excessive to nominate four songs from the same band, but if you'll let me get away with it, I'll throw it out there.

Actually @Raetsel_Lapin

I was just thinking. Since a lot of the songs you want to nominate are actually re-imagined songs using themes from Mega Man, they might all actually be acceptable.

As far as I know, I'm not sure that any of the Mega Man themes have ever been released on an album have they? (I mean.. I know you can listen to the "OST's" on youtube but I don't think any of them were actually released physically to my knowledge or at least anything I have found are streaming or MP3 only)

All of The Protomen stuff is fully original (though they have done covers of songs, I haven't mentioned any of those) which is the main difference between them and The Megas. They both take the same concept of "Mega Man inspired rock concept albums" and take them in different directions:

The Protomen go for depressing, 1984-styled dystopias with original albums that have nothing to do with the series other than some reused names.

The Megas directly cover songs from the games and put their own spin on them.

Both great bands aimed at the same target demographic, but radically different.

1 through 6 were released in a 3-disc collection on Capcom's own record label. And unfortunately for me, Castlevania has a surprising number of disc releases:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Castlevania_media#Music_albums

The original version of Bloody Tears is definitely on one of those. Haven't tried tracking down the other two Castlevania songs they did, but there are a lot of albums with a lot of songs on each of them, so I'd say "almost definitely".

Japan only to the best of my knowledge. If you wanted the complete track listing, you can find it here: http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Capcom_Music_Generation_-_Famicom_Music_Complete_Works_-_Rockman_1~6

It's quite complete. I had briefly hoped I could loophole my way around by finding a song covered by The Megas that didn't make the album (IIRC "I'm Not the Breakman" is based on Mega Man 3's Special Weapn theme), but even that made the cut.

While there are quite a few good songs on your cut list, Once In A Lifetime is definitely the one I'm most interested in hearing your thoughts on.

90s doesn't have many open spots remaining, so I probably shouldn't get overly greedy and take another one... but I want to mention this song anyway. Took me a while to find it, since I couldn't recall many lyrics and it's not a popular enough song to appear on many lists. I actually thought it was an 80s song when I started, since I first heard it on an 80s station... but for whatever reason they also included songs from '79 and '90...

16 more songs to go!!!

They are up for anyone for the bonus points.

Thank You all for helping finish the nomination list btw. It'll make it much easier for me to focus on the rest of the ranking without worrying about a nomination shortage.

70s

Band: Neil Young
Song: Heart of Gold

I should try to find a lesser known 70s Neil Young song, but I obviously don't have the time to listen to his albums and try to find anything. Full Disclosure: Never listened to a Neil Young album. I should--I should also listen to more Bob Dylan music. But I haven't. Just want to be sure at least one song of his gets in.

EDIT: In retrospect, I could also look at the work he did with Crosby, Stills, and Nash but...it's late.

A novelty song about the classic arcade game "Centipede" and a Tracy Chapman song nominated for multiple Grammies that tells a "grittily realistic story of a working poor woman trying to escape the cycle of poverty, set to folk rock music." Yes, this feels like two songs that should be nominated at the exact same time.

...also I'm just now realizing that I also nominated Meat Loaf's "Objects in the Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are"; what is it with me and sad songs that repeatedly reference cars this contest?
