Maybe it's just because I don't like dogs anymore, but I don't remember it being very common for people ten years ago to call themselves "dog moms" or say stuff like "my children have paws." Like jeez, get over yourselves.

Businesses allowing dogs is also annoying and I'm more sure that's a new thing. I was at a bar tonight and somebody had a little dog and the bartenders were letting the owner put it up on the chairs and the bar top. That's fucking disgusting. I know places that allow dogs aren't supposed to act like that, but even ones that have good practices are raising potential health code issues and being inconsiderate to people with allergies.

Then there's office workplaces allowing dogs, which unfortunately seems to be a growing trend. It's a bit of a downer when I interview at a place with a modern office culture and find out that they have dogs running around. Usually those places have other things about their culture that appeal to me, and I fear that one day it'll be hard to find any of them that are dog-free. Is it really such a fucking big deal to leave your dog at home sometimes?

I personally never saw the appeal of dogs. Well, pets in general, but especially dogs.

I guess it would be different if I had the time, money, energy, and patience for them. But I dont.

I just.. ugh I see these people out at the ass-crack of dawn in the freezing weather walking them. And I always think about how you always have to worry about your dog if you go out anywhere.

And if you want to take a trip you have to worry about finding a sitter.

No thanks.

Where I work they celebrate the dog's birthday, but if you bring in a cake for a birthday and try to take some time that is not allowed.

the whole dog moms and my kids have paws I feel like has been going on for about 10 years at least. at least thats what it feels like to me. i'm seeing it used on merchandise like coffee cups and shirts more if thats what you mean. and yeah i've been caught off guard by people bringing their dogs into walmart in recent history, used to not see stuff like that, I was only used to seeing them allowed in stores specifically for pets.

as for me, I love my dogs. but to be clear I mean my dogs not my neighbors dogs or my friends dogs, and I really don't give a fuck that some people in this world eat them. my dogs though i'll choose over most any human being i've ever met though.

Its because narcissism is on the rise and dogs do whatever you say unquestioningly if trained right.

Also people arent having kids, and its much harder to dress up your cat in cute outfits and show them off to your friends to feel like you are doing something worthwhile with your lonely life.

Dogs are tools, not people. They were bred for tasks and obedience.

I've heard this, but I doubt the conclusiveness of such claims. Also, that's probably only true of people who already like dogs. If dogs annoy you, introducing one into your life is just going to make it worse. They aren't a medicine or a healthy food that you can choke down for the benefits even if you don't like the taste.

I've had a few dogs in my life and I used to enjoy them when I was younger, but I'm over it now. The smells, constant need for walks, hair everywhere, picking up their shit for their entire life... no thanks. The thing I really don't understand is with young people who get out on their own and one of the first things they want to do is get a dog. Did they not have dogs growing up or something? Or maybe they were just completely oblivious to the negatives and had their parents do literally everything to take care of them?

This is why I don't like the coddling of dog owners so they can bring them into places that traditionally didn't used to have dogs. It's probably lowering the perception of what kind of burdens ownership entails. I don't care if people want to have dogs, but they shouldn't expect to bring them into work where they might be with people who aren't fans of them. If leaving the dog at home when they're at work is an issue for them, that should be their problem, not mine.

not always true on the "because you give them food" part. both dogs I currently have I didn't ask for and even protested the first one. as such I wasn't the one feeding them initially unless of course everyone else forgot to. i'm not a dick. but they bonded with me simply because I had more to do with them anyone else.

my second one I can remember more specifics on. she was only meant to be temporary till a permanent home was found for her. someone threw her over the fence of the local shelter. she was a very scared dog when I first met her, I had to literally pick her up and carry her out because she wouldn't come along on the leash. she stayed in a cage initially because we didn't know how she'd interact with the other animals, I always hated caging animals so I was always letting her out as long as I was around to supervise. I rarely was the one to feed her for the first couple of years, but she bonded with me. now she literally goes wherever I go in the house, she seems to hate not being in the same room as me.

your second statement though I can agree with. I knew a guy deathly afraid of dogs. something to do with trauma over being bit by one as a child. I doubt a dog would be the healthiest thing for him even though his mom kept a dog when he still lived with her, it was quite obvious he hated the dog.

I've lived with two dogs through their entire lifetimes (well, entire lifetimes since we adopted) and spent significant amounts of time living with several others. I have experienced it and I've also experienced things that entirely don't seem worth it to me and like they're just part of a misguided social construct.

Cats are entirely different. While the highs might not be as high as with dogs, the lows aren't as low either. Shedding is less of a problem, they don't bark, they poop in a centralized location and their poop is far less volatile.

my experience with cats is they tend to puke a lot more often than a dog, it seems harder to break a male of spraying if you don't get them fixed compared to house breaking a dog. and i'd rather take a dog outside than clean a litter box. don't get me wrong I like cats too. but there's pros and cons to both.

as far as the dogs barking. its annoying but at the same time its nice to know they'll wake me up if someone is breaking in.

But you still have to clean up after the dog, too... at least, I hope you do. Having a litterbox in your home isn't super appealing, I'll admit, but it's not too bad if you have a house with a basement or dedicated laundry room where it can be kept pretty out of the way. Regardless, though, disposal is a much easier thing to deal with if you have a cat.

how the hell do you get that I don't have a proper yard. I have about an acre. dogs just like to shit in the woods for some damn reason. which i'm not going to bitch about. and honestly just raking the yard once in awhile is the best option. lot of stray cats in the area so just cleaning up the dog shit itself won't accomplish much as there is cat shit too. yard has to be raked a lot anyways. damn pine cones everywhere if you don't.

it does kill me though that people think shit on the ground outside is gross when its pretty much how nature intended things to be. but then again I don't generally walk around my yard a lot unless i'm actually doing yard work. don't really have a reason to.

I could be remembering wrong, but I thought I've read that dogs have some of the worst shits of any animal, particularly domesticated dogs because of the processed food they eat. I'm not 100% sure though.

fortunately that not a big issue where I live. used to have problems with the neighbors dogs coming into our yard. they didn't shit on our lawn as far as i'm aware but they tore things up. a couple of time of my dogs attacking them (I didn't intend for it to happen just letting my dogs out not knowing other dogs where in the yard) put that to a end.

I don't get it. my dogs can't stand other dogs but are ok with cats. they will chase them but on the rare occasion they do manage to catch one they don't harm it. one just sniffs them and goes about her business the other will lick them.

But even a big cat is way smaller than a medium dog, and therefore has less hair to provide. And in my experience, it doesn't matter if the dog stays on the floor; the hair will find its way to just about any place imaginable.

What exactly do you mean by that?

Cats are more practical than dogs. A cat you can leave for a few days with a bowl of food and water and it'll be okay. A dog will eat that whole bowl of food on the first day, get really sick, and then not have anything to eat (except vomit) for the next few days.

Plus there aren't leash laws for cats.

If they serve food that would be a fairly severe health code violation in many places

Even clean and well groomed dogs can carry harmful parasites and should not be in public food establishments

never seen it in places that are all about selling food. but walmart is the main place i've seen it. I wouldn't be surprised if their is some high dollar restaurant though that lets stuck up rich people bring in their toy breed dogs.

There's at least one higher end restaurant in NYC that that serves gourmet dog food.

Plus there aren't leash laws for cats.

Yeah there are

(It varies municipality by municipality but there are laws regarding letting your cats roam outside and requiring a leash off property in many places I know of)

Now you're going to make me want to google images of cats on leashes because it sounds adorable.

Technically you can bring a dog to any restaurant with outdoor seating (well, any that either allow it or won't get too mad about it), but they have to stay outside the actual building. There are some restaurants which offer outdoor seating specifically for pet owners, as well as places which cater to people who might be walking their dog and get hungry.
