Animals are as much living beings with dynamic personalities as humans. I'm sorry that you've never experienced that type of bond with an animal before.

I've lived with two dogs through their entire lifetimes (well, entire lifetimes since we adopted) and spent significant amounts of time living with several others. I have experienced it and I've also experienced things that entirely don't seem worth it to me and like they're just part of a misguided social construct.

I cherish my bond with my cat as much as I cherish my relationship with my girlfriend of eight years, and that's no slight to her either.

Cats are entirely different. While the highs might not be as high as with dogs, the lows aren't as low either. Shedding is less of a problem, they don't bark, they poop in a centralized location and their poop is far less volatile.

my experience with cats is they tend to puke a lot more often than a dog, it seems harder to break a male of spraying if you don't get them fixed compared to house breaking a dog. and i'd rather take a dog outside than clean a litter box. don't get me wrong I like cats too. but there's pros and cons to both.

as far as the dogs barking. its annoying but at the same time its nice to know they'll wake me up if someone is breaking in.
