Chapter 1 was easy to figure out (though I read the speculation that Kaede was a decoy protagonist...) as well as Chapter 4. Chapter 3 and 5 were pretty baffling.
Well I want to type out a longer, more coherent impression but maybe later when I have the time and willpower.

My sister and gf both really hated Tsumugi actually. Even just nicknaming her Tsumugly and while I'm a fan of Tsumugi their complaints were justified.

She spent majority of the game without anything to do, just making the occasional nerd reference. Which while fun, Rent really important to like anything. Then comes the plot twist and while they liked that, it pretty much wasn't Tsumugi anymore. It was just Danganronpa as a character.

Either way I found her design cute and liked the plot twist as well as her anime references. But I can definitely see any disdain for her.

Yeah I don't understand at all how anyone could like Tsumugi. She was so boring and irrelevant for 90% of the game that I actually figured out she had to be the mastermind just to give her a purpose in the story.

She was also good natured and really, like Mahiru in DR2 it was partially her plainness and normalcy that appealed to me, being surrounded by crazies. Then the geeky references are great as well. Long hair + glasses + modest outfit always work for me. And seeing the characters from the first two DRs debating against you was awesomeee. Then her dedication to work for Danganronpa is endearing, she's such a passionate worker. And being able to write the twists and motivations for all the other characters is great, as a hobbyist writer I admire her.

As for the rankings... agree with you on Gonta/Keebo/Kokichi at the top and Tenko at the bottom, but Miu and Monodam are way too low (not that Monodam's necessarily great, just far better than the other kubs)

Eh I don't know about Miu. She's so vulgar but a hypocrite -- she folds back when anyone as much as look at her the wrong way. Her lines can be funny but it gets old quite fast for me.

Okay, my friend wants me to give some impressions on the characters so here it goes.

#16 Miu Iruma, The Ultimate Inventary
"W-Why am I this low? D-Do you hate me that much..."
Miu is *almost* Teruteru tier for me. She seems popular for some reason and I do get her appeal, but her shtick is just isn't for me. She's loud, obnoxious, rude, and gives 4th grade level nicknames. I'm thankful that she made the gadgets (how does that amount of technical knowledge work with self-suggestion brainwashing?!) so she's not useless.
On the other hand she can't take it if anyone as much as look at her in the wrong way. Such a tiring character to read.
RIP Miu, you have the distinction of being killed by toilet paper.

Best Moment(s): Flashing Gonta her lingerie so she can escape. That's a great idea.

#15 Tenko Chabashira, The Ultimate Aikidoer
"Who cares what a degenerate male thinks!"
First thing first, Tenko's disgusted sprite is so unpleasant to look at, rivaled only by Kokichi's evil sprites.
She hates men in an unreasonable manner (makes Mahiru's slight sexism looks perfectly normal) and her design is unappealing to me. Look at her overdesigned hair -- shuriken hairbow, headband, helix tails, and white hair ties...and her slightly too-short top. Buy a new uniform, girl!
She's also probably a lesbian, which is cool, I suppose. I do like how her death motivated Himiko to be more proactive.
I've just never been a big fan of jock characters and Tenko doesn't shake hthings up.

Best Moment(s): Throwing Ki-bo at the water tank, as well as throwing Himiko(!). Hilarious.

#14 Ryoma Hoshi, the Ultimate Tennicist
"...Place me wherever you want. It doesn't matter."
Weird design. He looks very weird and out of place (which is in line with DR traditions, but doesn't mean I have to like it!) and that hat makes him look even more silly. Of course, all these contrast with his gruff demeanor as an ex-convict...(actually I'm a bit unsure here, did he get released or was he taken from prison to the academy? ...I guess it doesn't matter since it's all made up).
But yeah he's supposed to be the cool bad boy character but: 1) that's boring and too serious, 2) it doesn't mesh well with his design. Off to the piranhas with you.

Best Moment(s): Agreeing to Kirumi's plan, since I'm pro-Kirumi. If the plan worked, he would've been a martyr and a hero.

#13 Angie Yonaga, the Ultimate Artisan
"Atua says it's alright for me to be here, so it's fine!"
Ah yeah, the crazy cultist girl. I didn't mind her gimmick so much and I do like her slightly bowing sprite. But chapter 3 soured me off her by the way she takes advantage of people to form a tyrannical organization, hiding behind the protection of her dubious god. I do wonder what would've happened if she succeeded with the resurrection plan...
Not much else to talk about.

#12 Himiko Yumeno, the Ultimate Magus
"Nyeh, whatever...I'll move my ranking up using magic!"
Ah, Himiko...
She started as a delusional mage character, which was...quite amusing throughout the game. She's also lazy, but not in a very entertaining way. Then Tenko died and she tried to open up more and be more proactive...which is...nice character growth, I suppose, but I was just not really invested in her either way. She didn't really play a big part in the last chapter either other than finding the other exit (which is big, yeah, but it was unrelated to her as a character. It could've been Maki, Kibo, or Shuichi that made that discovery. Or I guess...that ties in to her escaping from the water tank back in chapter 2? Eh...probably not.)

Best Moment(s): "I can choose the card you picked, pull out coins, and release doves. Nyeh, if I get serious, I can even saw someone in half."

11. Rantaro Amami, the Ultimate ?!
"I guess it makes sense for me to end up around here. Thanks."
We didn't get to spend a lot of time with him, but he's a great mysterious character. His design, personality, and actions all made me curious. I was caught off guard when he died first! That's awesome.
Then we learn more about him late game and via free time and he's...actually a pretty chill person! He survived the last killing game...which, if we take Tsumugi's words to be true, meant he came head to head with the mastermind as well. He does seem like someone who could survive far into the game. The thing with him traveling to find his sisters is really cool backstory as well. I like him and would love to see more of him in the future.

Best Moments: Uhh...painting Kaede's nails?

#10. Shuichi Saihara, the Ultimate Detector
"Ah...I see."
Meh. I'd rather have Kaede.
He didn't do anything wrong, mostly, he's a decent protagonist but very vanilla. And similar to Naegi in that he started out not really confident in his skills but grew to be more confident. I do like his solution to end the killing game, by giving the audience a disappointing ending on purpose.

Best Moments: Rejecting both Hope and Despair.

Tsumugi was the second best character I thought. After Miu though. Hating Miu is just lame. All her weak moments are related to Kokichi, who's by far the worst character.

Also I've heard far more positive impressions of the ending than negative ones...

#9. Kaito Momota, the Ultimate Argonaut

Yes, yes you can Kaito.

Well, there's nothing wrong with this guy, really. He was written quite well, played an important role in the story, and just cool enough. He's a bro through and through.

Buuut I don't like bro characters that much, they're never my favorite. Not interesting enough. I never hung out with him during FTE even once, he just didn't interest me.

Also I docked him some points for forcing people to exercise.

Best Moment(s): Making Maki and Shuichi exercise while he's gazing at the stars.

#8. Korekiyo Shinguji, The Ultimate Folklord
"So this is a tradition from where you come from. I see...how intriguing."
He's probably the most fucked up person in the game and that's saying a lot. Well, I like his design very much, very mysterious and slightly creepy but with a certain beauty and military influence to it. I also like his personality -- knowledgeable, polite, and just slightly creepy. I really like the bits of folklore he told us, very intriguing. I really hoped he would turn out to be harmless but alas, it is not so. He's batshit insane.

His incestuous relationship with his Sister is...well...a bit disturbing. But that's waaay tamer than what's to come. He tried to kill 100 girls to send friends to her and came pretty close. Wow. Okay.

And when he took off his mask. Wow. That might be the most surprised I've been at a character sprite revelation since...Matt Engarde (Ace Attorney 2) and Robin Newman (Ace Attorney 5). I LOVE it. She might just be a figment of his imagination, yet she's calmer and more in control when Korekiyo is close to a breakdown.

Then when it comes to his execution, the 'ghost' of his Sister appeared (or it seemed so anyway) and pelted him with purifying salt. I love the implication that his Sister didn't actually approve of his murders.

Just like the humanity he was so fond of observing, Korekiyo is one character who comes with layers of intrigue, each one beautifully interesting in their own way.

My friend pointed out a pretty good point though: he would be the one person who would've benefited the most from first chapter's First Blood perk. I wonder why he didn't use it. Perhaps he wanted to make sure the girls are worthy? But that's kinda weak.

Best Moment(s): Hard to pick, but let's just say when he geeked out over his Ultimate Lab. He's still a geeky teen after all.

Miu is an extremely well liked character. Has an average ranking in publicized lists of #4, the highest of any non "main" character.

I thought she was hilarious, and generally extremely likable. Her talent is one of the best in the game (how can you not like someone who makes awesome inventions?), she extremely confident, and she's fairly in tune with her sexuality, which is pretty rare for a Japanese character. She definitely has flaws (I thought her FTEs were pretty lame and backing off from Kokichi made me feel like the writer just had issues with women, especially since he already pulled that card with Toko in DR1, where it was much funnier), but she contributed more to me enjoying the game than anyone else. Her dying is a major reason I don't consider chapters 4 or 5 to be very good.

He does. Kodaka has gone on record that his intention with Miu was to make what he considered "the worst DR character ever who will fall last in everyone's character ranking", and it isn't much of a stretch to say a guy who looks at Miu and says "I cannot concieve of a female character worse than this" is kind of fucked up.

I'm the guy who considers Byakuya one of the worst fictional characters he's ever seen, so not one to judge.

That said, Miu almost always ranks super high, so I don't think that counts as a success to Kodaka, lol.
