...charity?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/george-soros-just-gave-almost-80-percent-of-his-wealth-to-his-charity/ar-AAtExv7

I was kinda surprised by this story. He gave away like 18 bil. of his 23 bil. fortune. I think less than what gates has given away but his perc. is much geater iirc. Would you do this too hypothetically?

When it says "charity" it kinda overlooks that a good chunk of the money is going to fund groups to advance political agendas rather than simply providing for peoples' needs.

In fact, if you google the charity, literally its mission statement is: "The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens."

I'd tip each waiter I had $10,000.

Maybe I'd do both, but only small obscure charities.

yeah very few billionaires do what he did and in all honesty i don't think i would hypothetically do what he did. Iirc most billionaires have declined to sign bill gates's giving pledge, including donald trump. I think trump wants to repeal the estate tax.

This doesn't actually make me see Soros as generous, seeing as how he still has vastly more than he'd ever need to live comfortably, but it does make people with similar amounts of wealth who DON'T give it away look like huge assholes.

Honestly, if I was a billionaire, I fully expect that I -- just like Soros -- would use my money to influence domestic and foreign policy in an attempt to shape the world to how I want it. A good many people no doubt rejoice that I'll almost certainly never have the billions to throw around like that.

Donate money to charities, no I never donate money to charities. Now would I use the money for charitable causes? Yes that I would do.

No chance. I'd donate something directly to the cause but never through a charity that will pocket most if not all of the cash I donate.

What about knighthood? Or a lordship then? =p At any rate, the fact that somebody is giving money away isn't necessarily a virtue in itself.

Also kinda an issue although the charities often dispense the services and handle logistical elements, just as identifying and serving the needy.

Fuck that. Charities are scams. I don't trust them at all. I'd rather donate to the county school board or give some to my friends or strangers, or just have my great-great-great-grandchildren set for life.

He is partially responsible for both Black Lives Matter and Antifa. His Open Society funded their riots.

Soros is an economic terrorist, who also got rich by destroying other countries' GDP. He is put on Most Wanted Lists in other countries, and runs the risk of getting arrested should he travel out of the US.

A lot of you make some good points. When I saw the results I thought some folks were just that selfish. But at the same time, charities do have such high overhead cost (partly from overpaid officials) that it is probably more effective to donate directly to those in need.

Not saying it is a good idea, just kind of want to do it and see what happens to the economy/area.

When most of those "donations" are political in nature and a lot of the others are motivated by tax reasons, yes, he kind of is a garbage person.

If I wanted to be a worthwhile charitable billionaire, I'd rather go the Bill Gates route.

Soros is a troublemaker.

If I had more money than I knew what to do with, Id give a bunch to animal or buy the rainforest charities. Id also probably lobby to keep bad people off the streets or making license plates in a fenced-off town somewhere.
