Also, Bill and I ran lines today...and he kinda just gave up in the middle of them. He was trailing a bit, then started talking about how he hasn't looked up what some of his monologue meant anyway and lost track. I told him to end it on "office" and I'll take it over from there. He said okay and he's gonna look up whatever phrase got him hung up. I haven't seen him since.

Sigh.

How in the fuck does he not know what his lines actually mean at this point?

Is this serious??

Srsly srs.

My scene with Bill went okay! There's a new problem though: it's a stormy scene with rain, thunder, and lightning effects, so I've gotten to play that up more and more. Shivering, rubbing arms, being scared of the flashes and thunder, a sneeze...trying to really own it. In the meanwhile, Bill saunters with no respect toward the weather -- dry as a desert to that guy.

I could tone it down so we don't appear as much in different worlds together, but this was one of last week's notes for us to own the weather more. I also don't think it's an actor's job to tell another actor what to do -- I'm not the director and we received the same note.

Oh, and we have a dramaturg too that I understood every actor had a one-on-one hour with for understanding lines. The dramaturg's also in the cast so he's available all the time to us. No Fear Shakespeare is free too.

I'm no Laurence Olivier, to be clear, and my own homework for this show has not been as dedicated as others I've done (did I mention I don't like Shakespearean plays?). Understanding a phrase is a readily-solvable problem though.

Did I mention this show has a Led Zepplin-based soundtrack? Gloucester just had his eyes plucked to the instrumental section of Whole Lotta Love.

We call that scene the eye exam.

Nothing super eventful at the party. Had some super-salty pretzels with beercheese and a nice tart kind of beer I liked. Some good laughs too about timing high fives between three people. It would have been nice to hang out later, but woooooooork.

That choice is fair enough if it's intentional, but I get the feeling it's not.....

This production's strangely aimed at being comedic (KING LEAR!) with the costume and lighting influenced by Game of Thrones. I think it's a few "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if _____" ideas cobbled together more than a real cohesive theme, but it turns out good in the end so what-ev.

Yeah, it's filtered away from that comedic premise more as we got to the end but the director thought there were a lot of funny parts (Kent telling Oswald off, not cutting any of the Fool's scenes that I remember, etc.) and we were light-hearted in our initial read-through so he urged us to keep that in mind through the rehearsal process.

We scrapped the idea of having Tweet-sized summaries visually appear between scenes when he decided not to be as direct with his political references. That might have been funny, but he went with voice-overs instead. They help, they just also make the show longer...and the way he reads them sounds like you're getting a summary on last week's episode of *INSERT REALITY TV SHOW*. It's funny to me, but not really the audience.

I don't get much room to be comedic, but my Big Fuzzy Hat (tm) occasionally gets a laugh and I did break Blood Princess with a grunt one night. I can also kinda force one from the audience with my reaction to seeing Gloucester's bloody eyeless self for my first time...it's a hacky laugh though, not particularly well earned or beneficial really to the show.

Pipethroat once won a fight just by letting his opponent karate-chop his neck.

Hey I didn't know you did theatre. I'm in Jesus Christ Superstar opening in just two weeks!

I would hate to see a message like that whether it was directed at me or not. Like, I totally understand where the director is coming from, and I've felt that frustration in shows before, but you just don't ever publicly do something like that.

I don't have time to read the full topic right now but out of curiosity which play (I assume it was Shakespeare based on the OP) was it and what role was Brian playing?

As you read this topic, you will realize professional training is optional.

It helps though! I have my degree and Shakespeare wasn't trying to trip up his actors, but centuries happened. Language and the rest of the world too has evolved without him. I struggled through this in different ways.

Director had a surprise get-together...no hoverboard racing this time, but it was nice. We had debates over who had the best hat in the show (me) and the difficulty of self-producing plays in this area. That one sucks since I got scripts man. I'll give it a shot soon though.

Heard the reference is pretty small and unimportant...don't care.
