Okay, so last night.

We had a cast party at the director's house. It's a nice little place that maybe thirty people shouldn't be exclusively hanging out on the first floor and deck of, but there was still enough room for hoverboard racing to go down as they made laps around the house. The racing lasted until the director broke a dish or something in another room -- ah well, it was fun to watch. Maybe there wasn't enough room afterall.

Shout out to the pimento cheese the director and his wife provided. Costume designer gets mad props too for picking up and delivering Sailor Jerry for me before I arrived -- don't let me forget to pay him back guys!

Police were called early on for what I believe is officially called "maximum crunkness," which was reported by a new neighbor. This led to people being more quiet on the deck and some absolute belting of music in the livingroom. More on that later.

There's a woman who came in Thursday to see her family-like friend Brian, named Hopey. She's a cute lady who might be Turkish but is visiting from Charlottesville. She's watched our show each night she's been in, and she took some other people's beers once the party starting thinning out because "nobody's even going to remember me in a week." Hmmm.

Hopey and I talk awhile, and eventually she confides in me that she's had a rough month. We go out on the deck and it turns out she lives down the same street Heather Heyer lived on, the victim who died from Charlottesville's car attack. She talked about the influx of hate that came that weekend and how much that's weighed in on her since then; one of her friends said Richard Spencer told her "Yeah, bet you'd love to be raped, wouldn't you (wasn't clear if this was from the same weekend)?" We talk about that for awhile and later move on, then along the way the temperature was dropping outside so I made a move.

"So hey, it's getting cold out here and I have seat warmers in my car. You wanna keep talking?"

"Nah, actually I wanna see what's going on inside." Oof. I start to wonder if she was actually seeing Brian and was just cautious to say so earlier.

We go inside.

So from the deck, we could see and were laughing at people dancing in the livingroom. Shout out to the director's door -- we couldn't hear anything from inside, so it was fun to see people breaking it down to the sound of the deck's group chatter.

We go in and it's a GaGathon. Six or so women, Brian, and the costume director Tino are just throwing the eff down. Hopey and I decided to get in the mix, and I'm bringing out all the white boy-classics while mumbling through the choruses with them. The "step to the side and back," the "raise some arms at peak moments," the "I see some friends clapping and that looks fun here let me join in too," the "look around and see who's partnering up with who and get self-conscious about why I haven't already got someone to dance with because this is where a beautiful beginning has been for so many relationships and oh god why am I still living by myself don't I know my parents had two children by now while I'm wondering more about what local apartments would allow me to buy a baby hedgehog I'd name Knuckles because Sonic is just too obvious and we all know who the cooler half of Sonic & Knuckles was geez people seem to really like Sonic Mania so way to go there Sega"...you know, the classic stuff seen at any dance party.

Blood Princess grabs my hand and we dance a few songs. She gives the best hugs -- really makes you feel like she needs you. She also gives lots of cheek-kisses that are really close to lips but not quite on the lips; I saw it happening with her and other people too so I thought it best that I don't take it further, but I kept thinking every peck was about to be THE ONE. We spin, swing, and laugh as Hopey keeps knocking over the director's banjo-case when she dances.

As the dancing started to simmer down and people were breaking away, Tino huddled Hopey and me up to figure out a plan to get people back in there to dance. He recommended either 70s or musicals, so I recommended some Earth, Wind, and Fire to fit that bill. Hopey recommended an electronica band I never heard of and we turned it on while we were still thinking, which somehow turned into "Hey, how do you think fish dance?" and dancing like we're fish in slow motion. I took a bathroom break and returned to Tino proving himself most knowledgable of our crew: suddenly a household is belting 525,600 Minutes.

(Passing Strange >> Spring Awakening > Rent -- watch Passing Strange)

What followed after that was musical audition after musical audition for an hour or two, and man there was some talent I didn't realize our cast had. I hang back on all of Rent's songs that were played and sorta fake my way through some of Wicked. It was mostly women who were crushing with the singing, but you know who else was holding their own? Brian! Men and women's parts alike, he was powering through and I didn't expect that from him.

During this time, Blood Princess was being there for another cast member over a glass of wine. I couldn't hear all the details, but this cast member said "...and then he goes off with some woman who's too..." before DEFYING GRAVITY drowned out the rest. Huh. I bring out my next dance move, the "reach into the air and grab that air right there."

Eventually the musicals change to Hamilton, and man we all went at it like nobody's business. I thought I was doing okay until somebody dropped the mic with their Lafayette speed-raps, wow. Get it girl! The person who was most consistent though? BRIAN!!! He's recovering well from earlier this week. At one point, when the soundtrack got to "My name is Alexander Hamilton," the director brought over a history book about the tomcat himself...pretty good timing. We did so many songs I thought we were gonna do it all (out of order).

At about 3:30 in the morning, I tell the cast I need to be going and I say my goodbyes to these lovely people. As I'm walking out of the livingroom and toward the front door though.....

That lady I overheard say "...and then he goes off with some woman who's too..." earlier? Her name is Shelly.

She's wearing a green dress and leaning against the kitchen table in an empty room as I'm trying to leave -- with that kind of face and posture -- and I notice she's looking right at me. I turn away from the front door and walk to her.

So listen, when we began rehearsals earlier this summer I noticed right away she was cute. We talked for a minute or so, then we never talked much after that. Even when I'd say hey and try to talk, it was just basic greeting-stuff and hard to talk further. I thought she was a bit stand-off'ish, like she had a boyfriend or something.

She impressed me though with her positivity and confidence. Sometime two weeks ago, she was telling a story to the cast that involved one of those "look at me" gestures. She's a big girl and a lot of the cast was quick to get on the "oh come on" train to support her like she was gonna joke about her weight, but she then followed it up with a punchline of self-praise instead of insulting. She recognized the dynamic though and said something simple that made sense without being very arrogant: "I like me. I'm not into putting myself down." My comedy background inside me suddenly exploded and I wondered what I was doing with my life.

Fast forward to the kitchen table again. We wrap up and dance all to ourselves and I have no idea how to really talk with her.

"I wondered if we'd dance." A little laugh.

I knew she grew up near where I did, so we go down that road of playful jokes. Apparently my home town has a reputation where 87% love country music and the other 13% moved away. I remind her I moved away. Her dancing changes rhythms slightly and I remember being called out ten years ago for being a bad dancer so now I'm in my head -- I guess I try to do more or less what the women are doing in my dances? I never really learned a better style, but it's okay I suppose -- we're close.

MGMT's Electric Feel comes on -- finally, a dance song I actually know. She doesn't know it, so I told her everything she needed to know: Electric Slide and Kids are brilliant, and their second album had them taking way too many drugs to take then seriously anymore. It's only now I realize I called it Electric Slide then and not Electric Feel, oops. She kisses my cheek and I kiss hers.

She reminds me of the cast party she's hosting next weekend on closing night (sidenote: we have like half as many cast parties scheduled as we have shows scheduled because we're mature and stuff). I tell her I wouldn't miss it.

She pulls away and reminds me I was trying to leave, right? Fifteen minutes passed and I forgot that front door was ever behind me. We part ways and now I'm wondering how this final week is gonna be.

Just nailed walking on-stage to say "Ready my lord" and walking right back off. Buzz off Shakespeare with your ten second cameos, I hate you so much sometimes and you can't use my chair.

BREAKING NEWS: Bill or the prop mistress screwed the pooch! He forgot the bag he was supposed to give me, and I saw him at the prop table seconds before we went on so...maybe the bag was missing or maybe he forgot to grab it. Either way, every actor is responsible for checking their props before each show and the bag was there when we returned backstage.

We recovered by me turning my back and acting like I'm finding a ring before pocketing it and turning back around. It doesn't look good on stage, but it's a proper save.

Since he gives me the ring-bag to prove himself, there's a side of me that wishes I would have rejected him for not having evidence and waiting through him solving the awkwardness in front of the audience. I would never do that, but the idea's funny to me.

Some things I've asked with no preparation that were fun:

What is a man?

Would you rather save your best friend or your hometown?
Would you rather make big animals small or small animals big?

I also sneak in the occasional bad joke, like:
