This is almost making it too real I think.

I felt unsettled the whole time. As though Tommy was selling out by making fun of himself.

Part of the allure of The Room was the idea that Tommy was taking the whole thing completely seriously.

still gonna see this as soon as it comes out though

I don't really like Franco as Wisseau. I think if anyone unfamiliar with The Room happens to watch this, they'll think he's mocking a retarted person.

This looks pretty bad, honestly. And I really want this to be good too. There's something about James Franco's acting like Tommy Wisseau that's really, really bad. He doesn't come across as some kind of funny idiot, he just ends up being annoying in the way they don't want him to be. It's like the worst Wisseau impression I've ever seen too.

Seth Rogan was the funniest part of the trailer, honestly. I just don't see this being very good at all. All of the Wisseau jokes just seem too in your face rather than subtle nonsense like it probably should be.

yeah, agree with all of this. sestero himself does a much better wiseau impersonation than james franco.

as a the room fan this still intrigues me but i dunno.

People watch the Room to laugh at it

This is now presenting a way for us to not only laugh at it some more at a new angle, but the whole "creative" process behind it

you guys are thinking too hard about this

I support the idea of the movie (and still want to read the book), and I like a lot of the jokes in the trailer. I just don't think Franco does a good impression.

Yeah, the makeup work is fantastic.

This looks terrible though. While I find The Room hilarious, I don't think The Disaster Artist was a comedy. I listened to it on audiobook and it seems to be filled with more pathos than anything. I mean yeah we can laugh at a lot of things because Tommy is a ridiculous character, but The Disaster Artist gives you a glimpse of the man behind the persona he's trying to portray and many aspects of his character are kind of sad. I feel like this movie is going to be all about laughing at how crazy Tommy is rather than actually trying to examine what makes him so uniquely interesting.

I'm not actually convinced this film is a comedy - they might just be marketing it as one because that plays better. I agree that the book is not a comedy, but it IS a book with some amazingly funny stories to tell. It's a book that is highly sympathetic towards Tommy Wiseau so I kind of expect that the movie will carry some of that with it

Hasn't this been advanced screened already to pretty good reviews

Regardless, most Franco/Rogen comedies have a high floor/low ceiling so as long as it matches those I would be satisfied watching it

Yeah, I've got a lot of faith in Rogen and Franco. From hearing them talk it sounds like they're quite genuine in their love of The Room and Sestero's book. I think they understand the angle it should take... but you never know how much control the studios ultimately have on the final product.

The book for me was very much "come for the crazy stories about The Room, stay for the surprisingly gripping and emotional story about an unlikely friendship", and I'm sort of hoping this trailer is the first half of this and the second half has yet to be seen

Yes, it's getting early Oscar buzz. I am a bit surprised by the reactions in this topic to be honest. I think the film looks great. If nothing else he nails the laugh.
