I don't really see the problem with this, but they should just use both girls and boys which would be more realistic.

Would certainly add more drama given any potential emotional ties and hormones.

I think some of us are more upset movies are being retold/remade instead of us getting new material to enjoy. However, movies that tie-in with older movies though I am fine with like the upcoming Blade Runner movie.

Are they going to do the pig scene?

Completely ignoring the gender swap remaking this movie doesn't really make sense anyway. Modern technology doesn't add anything to the story because they will lose it all. And the idea that a group of people would descend to savagery in a primitive state is not a novel idea, we already see that in shows like The Walking Dead.

The premise is that violence and savagery is so ingrained in us, that even beings as pure as children will revert into monsters when the need to survive arises.

So I have zero interest in this movie, but I am very familiar with the source material and I fail to see how swapping for an all female cast in any way detracts from the source material. It's not like the Lord of the Flies has any major plot points that lean on the gender of the participants; the whole underlying message is about the tragic and innate savagery of humanity and our willingness to revert to animalism when the chips are down. That can be accomplished just as easily with a cast of girls as a cast of boys.

I have no idea why people are clutching their pearls over this. If anything, the use of girls might enhance the story due to girls' traditional association with purity, passiveness, and pacifism. Nothing guarantees this won't be a shitty movie, but screaming that everything is ruined just because none of the characters have dongs is more than a little sensationalist.

Already been done.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0474539/

Also, how is it more realistic? The original story was that it was all boys because it was a flight evacuating a boys school; just change the school to a girl's school to make the cast all girls, or a co-ed school if you want mixed gender. I fail to see how any of those are unrealistic.

Plus doing an all-female cast means they don't have to compete with the older, superior versions of the film and the gender swap gimmick makes it easier to attract eyeballs while deflecting legitimate criticism ("The film isn't bad! They just hate women!")

I would care if I believed for a second it would draw attention. As-is it's like advertising 'The Wizard of Oz! Now with a Lesbian Dorothy, Tin Woman, Cowardly Lion, and Hug-crow! Fighting against the evil Trump of the West!'

The question of if an all-female cast would be fine or not is irrelevant. IMO this screams of 'I don't care one bit about the book but want to virtue signal how PC I am!'

I think the all boy cast was an intentional choice to highlight the ingrained aggression of men in particular though. When you're talking about historical/biological violence and aggression in humans, it's not at all controversial to attribute it primarily to the male half. I haven't read the book in ages but I seem to remember the pig scene in particular being almost rapey.

If the film is being made with a deliberate counter point ("Women are just as bad as men in this respect") then it might be interesting. But I don't think that was the intention of the original novel at all and if it's just a copy paste job it might feel less interesting.

I'm not super passionate about the story though so it's not a big deal either way. If the movie is bad it's hardly a problem for the Lord of the Flies cinematic universe.

Do remember, they could go the complete opposite direction and have the girls build a functioning and socialistic (because, let's face it, it's propaganda) society in which the pig is properly cared for and petticured as well.

I don't see who they are appealing to here:

Fans of the source material aren't going to like it because they are changing genders of the characters for no reason (Ghostbusters anyone?)

Feminists aren't going to like it because it is going to show women be just as savage and bloodthirsty as men, which completely goes against the modern feminist message.

People who go into it with a blank slate aren't going to like it because they will say "Oh, it's another survival movie, but with children" and ignore it.

Oh, I didn't know the kid's genders were integral to the story, we must have read different books, because it's about humanity and what we do when we're all alone.
Now, if they made Piggy super skinny for reasons, yeah that would be a bad change, because that was half of his personality was based on the fact that he was fat.

Or they could respect the integrity of the source material and leave it as male?

Besides, as was said earlier, males in general are more territorial and predisposed to violence. Males are usually bullies in school and are quicker to become confrontational. The movie loses something without that aspect.
