For the sake of my own sanity, please tell me this ESPN story about Robert Lee is a practical joke.

No way did ESPN pull an Asian announcer to avoid offending leftist idiots prematurely, right?

I really hope so too. It's beyond asinine.

It is true and ESPN is rightfully getting ridiculed for it so whatever.

Jumping back to an earlier topic of discussion. I'm 100% certain the Democrats would help pass a debt ceiling extension over a veto if it came to it (and in fact wouldn't be surprised if Ryan needs them to pass it outright.) I'm also very sure they'd help avoid/end a shutdown with regards to a budget provided they weren't passing a budget with wall funding. I'm less sure Ryan could find enough Republicans to reach a veto override (just passing it would be easy for him) but probably could.

Unlike Ryan, Pelosi can deliver votes for whatever.

So Trump is really going to pardon Arpaio.

I feel like pardons need some sort of rules to them. I mean it's used way too often to help political allies--including by Bill Clinton when he pardoned Marc Rich.

Arpaio was voted out of office, wasn't he? I wouldn't really consider him a political ally so much as a dude Trump's base approves of and that he can fire up his supporters by mentioning a lot.

Essentially, he's using Arpaio as a Confederate monument.

I know the timing of saying this feels convenient, though I believe I've said it in the past, but pardons always felt "unbalanced" to me. Way too much power that can be exercised with no checks on it.

I know it's meant to be a check on the judiciary, but the potential for abuse is just so high. I think it'd be better if it could be overridden like a veto as another check. Maybe up the requirement for override from 2/3 to 75% if you're concerned about it.

Theoretically the check on it is impeachment, which is way too all-or-nothing. Having a very difficult Congressional override seems fair.

That said, I'm not sure you'd get 75% opposing this pardon

Yeah, impeachment or elections are always the ultimate check on any use of power, but like you said way too all-or-nothing.

I also didn't mean to imply that instituting that kind of check would stop this instance. I don't even think it could be stopped if it only required a simple majority! I'm just saying in the abstract I've always felt it was too much power granted to a single person without any check on it.

It would also, theoretically, give the public a more feasible option to petition for. You could always call your representatives and lobby for a pardon override. Instead of now where you either have to call for impeachment (which wouldn't actually nullify the pardon) or do nothing because there's nothing you can do.

To be fair, the guy himself came out and said that it was a mutual decision not for anybody else or their feelings, but for the guy himself, so that he wouldn't have to deal with any potential idiots from being there.

I feel like that's potentially even more dangerous.

IN GENERAL I would trust the President with unlimited pardoning power than giving any amount of the public judicial override power.

This is just an extreme President

To be fair, from the quote I read it sounded more like ESPN went to him with it, and he said sure, rather than him going to ESPN and saying "i'm not comfortable with this."

That said, I have no problem with ESPN doing this because what they said is true, the possibility for bad stuff happening from it was certainly there.
