It's confusing as fuck. As far as I can tell, they both have similar functions and some overlap but there are some that seem to have been removed from the Control Panel, like the Display/Personalize options. There are also some that probably aren't in the Settings app like Device Manager, but I don't know it well enough to say for sure.

I hate it. It seems like the Settings app is meant for touchscreen devices and the Control Panel meant for traditional users. That would be great if they both had the same features and you could choose to disable one or the other, but neither of those are true AFAIK. I just want to use the damn Control Panel to change all my settings because I generally know where everything is from many years of use, but MS has made this very hard.

It's meant to be confusing, Windows doesn't want people adjusting the OS but can't afford the backlash of outright removing control.

The settings app is meant to replace control panel, but they keep control panel around so that people don't complain about them changing things.

And yet people still complain about them changing things.

It's almost like they knew that the Settings app sucks. Actually, it's probably okay, but I'd still rather use the control panel. They probably would have been better off removing the Control Panel from the start rather than leaving us with a mostly useful but slightly gimped version.

I just hate how everything in the settings app looks the same. There's no color to the icons. It looks more modern and minimalist, but the unique designs of each icon in the Control Panel helped me remember them.

Edit: Everything looking the same extends to the fairly uniform layouts and window size that the Settings app uses as well. The Control Panel had all kinds of different window layouts and other windows and programs popping up depending on what you selected. You could argue that's objectively "bad" design, but it made it easy to familiarize yourself with all the functions and if you opened something up you could tell if you had the right thing just by the window layout. The Settings app makes you actually read through all the particular settings you just opened in order to tell if you're in the right place.

The settings app represents about 90% of what the common user is going to mess with. Anything not in the settings app most people aren't going to mess with unless they are an advanced user (who would prefer the control panel anyways). It is minimalist and modern because that is what most users know nowadays. Show a person who is used to doing everything in iOS or Android the control panel and they are going to get overwhelmed by how complected it is.

the new windows 10 "apps" that I've used are god-awful. settings is one of them, but there's also the mail program. atrociously bad software. I used to love Microsoft, but these days my opinion of them just keeps diminishing, whereas my opinion of Google just keeps growing.

In the "app" you have to go under advanced settings to change the resolution.

Nobody at Microsoft knows what they're doing atm. The people who were great enough to make the company what it is are gone and have been replaced by these guys.

I don't feel like it's just Microsoft. A lot of websites have become less ideal for desktop users as they also try to cater to mobile users. There is a lot of confused design where we still have a bunch of things that are mishmashes of design philosophies for different devices. Of course, website designs have still increased dramatically in quality overall as there have been several innovations and concepts that make them more modular. However, I still hate ones that have overly large text, hide too many links and use unclear/pictorial touch points instead of text menus.

Windows isn't a mobile platform, they're just incompetent.

They made a phone and it was completely useless because it didn't run x86. Meanwhile, they try to turn their PC version into a phone OS. They just have no idea what they're doing.

Didn't they get rid of all their mobile OSes? I thought their goal was to just have one Windows, hence why they have these mobile-like apps on desktops and non-touch laptops. IIRC the Windows Phones failed but they still have tablets, so I don't know what you mean by "Windows isn't a mobile platform"

This is a big peeve of mine. I get that it makes creating a site with multiple languages easier, but there are no universal meanings to most of the symbols. Not to mention having to learn what symbols mean at each encounter.

Sometimes there isn't even a symbol at all, like when there is some kind of pull-down menu that you just have to know to swipe out. I also hate those sites that load in "panes" that are fixed sections that are meant to fit entirely in your window. Sometimes those don't have scrollbars shown and I think I'm looking at the whole site when it's actually just the top pane

Windows isn't a mobile platform, they're just incompetent.

basically. someone with authority and no clue is pushing redesigns of things without allowing a proper software design cycle to generate a well designed product.

the completely idiotic Visual Studio icon redesign was the first time I was hit by this. just a completely thoughtless redesign to something that didn't need it that ended up ruining a crucial part of the whole product.

but now I'm seeing that same spirit of "change what doesn't need changing, oops I guess we made it way worse" in windows 10.

the problem is, from a naive point of view, Microsoft is a company that can make O/S software, word processing software, spreadsheet software, and so on, right? well no, they actually do NOT have that capability.

they are a company that *happens to own the code base* for an O/S, word processor, spreadsheet, etc.

they tweak it here and there on the surface, but they aren't generating this kind of software from scratch, like ever, and even with all the tweaks it's the same thing under the covers. Things like the print server, or joining windows domains, or modifying network settings, underneath that's all the same exact stuff that's been there since at least Windows 3.1. it just gets buried underneath more and more BS UIs. I still deal with print server problems that I've been dealing with since Windows 3.1 because there's no real redesign of anything that matters, just the superficial presentation part, trying to wow the end user with a fancy appearance despite having no real difference aside from the presentation. (exceptions abound probably. the "ribbon" idea is a new thing they came up with that maybe isn't all bad. I think I like the windows 10 start menu, and it IS more functional than older start menus.)

Huh. I know I still have Control Panel. However, I did set my connection as "metered" so it wouldn't download updates over my 5GB (yeah, I know) network, so I may not have the latest update.

besides, it really doesn't bother me. everything from control panel is in settings. i have to relearn where one of two things are, but for the most part everything i used control panel for is in a intuitive location

the weird thing is that control panel does show up when searched for, but it just opens settings. lemme gif this out real quick

anyways, talking about really dumb designs, they're redesigning the xbox one dashboard AGAIN.

and it's a complete step backwards from what's there now.

and guess what's most prominently displayed on the dashboard? ads. the two biggest things on the main dashboard page are ads.

you want to play a game? it's the smallest icon. literally. even the icon to go browse through your games is larger than the icon to play or resume whatever game you have been playing.
