Windows isn't a mobile platform, they're just incompetent.

basically. someone with authority and no clue is pushing redesigns of things without allowing a proper software design cycle to generate a well designed product.

the completely idiotic Visual Studio icon redesign was the first time I was hit by this. just a completely thoughtless redesign to something that didn't need it that ended up ruining a crucial part of the whole product.

but now I'm seeing that same spirit of "change what doesn't need changing, oops I guess we made it way worse" in windows 10.

the problem is, from a naive point of view, Microsoft is a company that can make O/S software, word processing software, spreadsheet software, and so on, right? well no, they actually do NOT have that capability.

they are a company that *happens to own the code base* for an O/S, word processor, spreadsheet, etc.

they tweak it here and there on the surface, but they aren't generating this kind of software from scratch, like ever, and even with all the tweaks it's the same thing under the covers. Things like the print server, or joining windows domains, or modifying network settings, underneath that's all the same exact stuff that's been there since at least Windows 3.1. it just gets buried underneath more and more BS UIs. I still deal with print server problems that I've been dealing with since Windows 3.1 because there's no real redesign of anything that matters, just the superficial presentation part, trying to wow the end user with a fancy appearance despite having no real difference aside from the presentation. (exceptions abound probably. the "ribbon" idea is a new thing they came up with that maybe isn't all bad. I think I like the windows 10 start menu, and it IS more functional than older start menus.)
