You get 10 minutes to prepare (look up blueprints for inventions/read up on politics/browse porn), then you're transported to any time and place of your choosing. Where and when do you go? What do you do? Do you invent modern tech to become rich and famous?

I'd go back in time a few years and make a killing in sports betting and the stock market. Actually going far back in time would suck balls.

Due to the limited nature of it being a straight-up time travel, then I might not even do it. Or failing that, I would prefer to save it to use in the future to go back a few days, so that I am not at risk of meeting a past self who is unaware of the possibility of meeting a future self. Reduces paradox risk that way at least, if time happens to be ornery like that. In other words, I would prefer the ability to travel back in time to any point after I first get the option (i.e. if I got the option to travel back in time at this moment, then I could at any point in the future use it once to travel back to any time at or after this moment)

What I would really like instead is the ability to instead send my memories/soul/self back in time to my body in the past. i.e. so I could basically return to the past, becoming my childhood self. It would also mean that I don't have to worry about living conditions or otherwise not having a place due to another instance of me already existing in that time.

Aside from the fact that it would technically result in me being a prodigy (definition is basically "a child capable of functioning on the same level as an adult in some field of work), I could potentially look up some simple modern invention to take back. Best bet would probably be alloys or interesting mixtures of materials.

Also, depending on how far back, then good stocks to aim at would probably be Apple, Microsoft, Google, and some potential competitors of theirs (like Yahoo for instance) just in case "butterfly effect" messes things up (regardless of who wins, the important knowledge is that internet search engines will be a HUGE thing, as will computer OS sales).

I suppose I could also attempt to learn Java as early as I can, and invent Minecraft.

Louis CK had a joke about this. How a white person could go back to any point in time and they'd have a table waiting for him, while a black man wouldn't go anywhere further back than the 1960s.

I am actually white but I don't like that so many people were racist towards black people for so many years.

There are enough games etc for me to enjoy that I have not played that I could go back a year or so, play the lotto and get a huge jackpot (2 posters mentioned the billion dollar one already), but I wouldn't stop there. I'd plan for that, but also memorize/write down games to bet on, the best stock market picks etc, so I could make a ton of money in the next year after that as well.

Hopefully get a few billion out of it, then I could invest that money on making some really freaking awesome games for me to play and really get VR going (good VR rpgs and especially get a strong good SAoL type VR mmo going as well.

So yeah, back to 2015-16 or so before the big lottery.

I got two options.
First is to Roswell to see the weather balloon.
Second is to 1791 and convince the founding fathers to word their documents different because people will whine about how the second one uses a rare grammatical rule, which according to people is how people talked back then but it is not used in any other of their documents.

Once again showing us why comedians with a high school education don't have a great grasp on history >_> Granted, I guess historical ignorance IS funny. Belushi certainly had people cracking up over his remark in Animal House about the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor

Like others have said, just go back enough to be able to score some quick big bucks.

But honestly, if it wasn't reversing time so that I'm the age I was back then I wouldn't even want to go back in time. Especially if it was just a one way trip.

I wonder about this though. What kind of skillsets would one need to survive in the near or far future? Would the most basic tasks be automated and civilians must acquire more technical skills to survive? Or could it become a Star Trek like utopia where the essentials are provided freely and only luxury would require some work?
