The books are definitely more cerebral and deliberate in all their actions, but they have their own issues. Things the show did worse/ruined: Jaime not distancing himself from Cersei after returning, everything to do with Dorne, Northern conspiracy Things they did better: Hound, Arya and her adventures with Tywin and the Hound, at some points cutting down some extraneous plots was actually nice as GRRM never seems to be able to edit his stuff, they actually come out on time --- Moops? book-tyrion has worse stuff in general and more of it, yes... but it also has perhaps a moment better than any in show-tyrion's arc:

yeah, even if ultimately he does the deed in the books it happens in a very different way. logistically the shows version isn't possible at the moment. i could easily see him doing it in a desperate place, his entire arc is basically leading up to something like that "sacrifice is never easy...or it is no true sacrifice", but right now he is pretty confident about his odds against ramsey and she isn't around to begin with....and jon is already dead. so things may ultimately end up very similar but certainly occur in a different way.

I think the reason the book declined in quality, as you said, is because books 4 and 5 were supposed to be one book. Then it dragged on so Martin had to split it and it was still too long so he had to push stuff to winds Feast and Dance have no real climaxes, which is why they are perceived as a decline compared to storm That's one reason I'm excited for winds though because (in theory) there should be two climaxes...one to start and one to end --- Not changing this sig until Dom Capers is no longer employed by the Green Bay Packers. GRRM has forgotten how to skip past the fluff. He used to skip past most travelogues, but now he feels the need to include that stuff, especially for certain main characters i.e. Tyrion, Dany, Jon, Brienne, Samwell, Jaime, Cersei. The books have slowed way down, but I'd be okay with that if we got them timely. I'd take another 5 slow books if there wasn't a long wait.
The show has declined because of lazy writing. One random example was when Brienne was watching for Sansa outside of Winterfell, and she couldn't afford to leave her post. She left her post to kill Stannis, while Sansa lit the candle. Surely this would have dire consequences! But nope, they reunite with no problem. AFFC/ADWD aren't just worse because of travelogues and lack of plot progression. They're also worse because the characters in comparison suck.
Most of the Dornish/Ironborn characters blow. Just because the books' Sand Snakes aren't poorly acted with awful fight choreographt doesn't mean they're well written. The Soiled Knight chapter sucks. Areo Hotah literally has as much character in the books, and using him as a narrative device to avoid tipping Doran's hand is fucking awful writing. We also miss out on his own badass moment by viewing it through Arianne's eyes. The only character worth a damn there is Arianne (and Ellaria, in fairness). That's not even getting into Quentyn, whose 100 ADWD pages basically made the amazing AFFC cliffhanger into a fucking embarrassment. Seventeen years of Dornish vengeance, and "Oh." Aeron is 100 pages of insight into the Ironborn mindset that we could've gotten in five via Asha. Victarion is amusingly stupid, but redundant and obviously not a character whose development will clearly not matter. Now, the Kingsmoot is incredible (best sequence in AFFC?), and the action sequences are great, and Euron is a pretty great villain, and I really like Asha's cunning (which the show appears to be converting to cunninglingus), so I'm more forgiving here. But essentially, we're wasting pages on POVs that don't advsnce truly important characters. Also - I love both the books and the show! I've had almost nothing but good words for S7 so far. --- yet all sailors of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable - they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness ... we didn't get insight into mord's POV even though he's a moron and vale inhabitant. we didn't get insight into clansmen POVs even though they helped tyrion and the lannisters tremendously. we didn't get any POVs from the cassells, or the karstarks, or the umbers, even though they surround the critically important starks. we never find out how adam marbrand and amory lorch feel about being general shitheads and raping the riverlands. somehow we survived, and we got a good idea of what was important about them, and what was important to them.
