Anyway, the larger thing that absolutely disgusts me is that it is extremely obvious that Trump is going to war with the media because he's a narcissist who can't handle criticism. He's blatantly trying to destroy public faith in the media so that they can no longer act as an effective check on his power (at least among his base), and half of the country is lapping it up.

There are a ton of very real things to for which one could fairly criticize the media, but negative reporting on Trump is not one of them. By and large journalists working for CNN are just trying to do their jobs, and Trump's attacks on them are pathetic and disgusting.

just caught up on the previous topic.

the wording of what CNN said was kinda terrible, pretty sure everyone agreed to that.

but yeah, going by the currently available information "CNN DOXXED A 15 YEAR OLD KID" isn't even close to what actually happaned. but of course the trump worshipers ran with this version of the story and lost their shit.

Is it fake news when a CNN representative literally says he apologized only after CNN called him? Or when they say they have his information and they're not going to release it since he made a sincere apology? Or when they said that they will release his information after stating that they know how much it would ruin his life and his family if he makes another meme?

Because if it's all fake news, then it's probably CNN who is coming up with it in this case! And when you say it's 4chan or whoever t_d is, you should probably also be aware that Julian Assange is the main person claiming that they are breaking all kinds of laws with this.

This is fake news though?

Your first part "he apologized only after CNN called him".

What's wrong with that? Guy made a gif. Got contacted by the target and apologized.

And a media outlet's job is literally to investigate who is behind shit. The fact they're not release any info at all is surpsrising, to say the least.

And it's been said before but for some reason people aren't getting this:

Literally the only info we have about him, the fact he's supposedly 15 years old, is from 4chan. Not CNN. 4chan.

Gotta love such a silly and petty situation causing people like ExTha and Corrik to be like "my Trump vote is worth it now" over...this?

CNN is clicks/views trash journalism, but is the cult of personality so strong that them getting flak is worth voting in the dumbest President of all time?

It's really no different than when a local news story reports on some jerk who might be ripping people off. They don't hide his name, either. If it's a story they feel worth reporting on and he wishes to keep anonymity, he has to work with the news organization. That's true to all tenets of basic journalism.

I think that for stupid reasons, the CNN wrestling gif became a huge story. CNN found out the identity of the gif's creator and contacted him for comment. Realizing that, as a shitposting troll, his anonymity is the only reason he gets away with posting half the shit he does, he overreacted, apologized and asked CNN to keep his name a secret. CNN agreed to this because the guy's identity really isn't important to the "story", but clarified (using extremely poor language) that if his identity DID become important, they might reveal it at a later date. This innocuous comment was misinterpreted by the right, who love painting themselves as victims, and now we have the blow-up against CNN for "doxxing" a 15-year-old (a detail that was a lie, by the way, to make CNN look even worse.)

The right's interpretation is that CNN is SO petty that they would threaten to dox a guy over a lame gif. CNN may be stupid for making a story out of this in the first place, but c'mon now. This is like claiming Hillary Clinton had Seth Rich murdered after hacks and leaks he allegedly committed had already occurred. It just makes no logical sense unless you want to demonize liberals.

ignoring the stupid made-up conversation of the first paragraph, yes scenario #2 is absolute lunacy and there is absolutely zero evidence behind it

CNN doesn't give a fuck about making some moron posting an apology on fucking reddit. What the hell is that supposed to do?

Actual Scenario: CNN follows up on the story of a guy taking credit for the gif, contacts the guy, guy shits his pants at the thought of his racist shitposting (including calling out n*****s repeatedly) being identified and comes up with the apology of is own idiotic accord.

He's just a stupid fucking racist running away with his tail between his legs. End of story.

Yep, journalists are shitty and ruin people's lives in the name of truth. See stuff like revealing the sexual affairs of politicians. This has been the case forever. They still serve such an important role in democracy that we keep them around.

What stands out a little bit in this case is pointing the cannon of journalism at a private citizen who posted an internet gif. If it was made by a politician serving in congress, sure, publish his full name, the public has a right to know. But once they realized it was just some dude who made bad internet memes, they probably should have dropped the story.

I think this was pretty much a guy who though internet anonymity would actually protect him, not realizing none of us are actually anonymous, panicked and cleared up his whole history for fear of how badly this could go for him even if CNN never publishes his name.

Anyone claiming the contrary is ridiculous.

I think the only problem people have here is CNN being involved in the story. I don't see how their practice so far has deviated from what they would usually do, but because here "what they would usually do" also involves defending themselves it looks a bit more sinister

They had every right. Once that list of their employees and accompanying rant became a thing, he was an active threat to their employee's well-being (and probably would have been an accessory to murder if some nutbar decided to use it to go Jew hunting)

but clarified (using extremely poor language) that if his identity DID become important, they might reveal it at a later date

no, they explicitly stated four terms: that he had better keep apologizing, feeling remorse, doesn't come back to "repeat this ugly behavior" whatever that means (seeing how he's in the news for a GIF), and that he needs to keep saying he's an example.

then they said that if he violated any of those four, they may reveal his identity.

that's not "poor language that he may become important," if he turned around and said that he wasn't sorry for making a GIF how is that worth revealing his identity? if he calls someone a slur again or makes GIFs again, how is that newsworthy? none of these are things that really say a major news network should do to ruin him. you may not like what he's saying but there's no crime being committed in what he's saying.

they could've left it at simply "because he's a private citizen" but actively didn't.
but they didn't do that. they stated four specific points then said if he violated any of that, he's fair game. either being a private citizen alone should protect against that or it's always fair game.

the response by CNN isn't much better either: they're sticking to saying "oh we didn't SPEAK to him."
which is technically true.
they just emailed him, called him, and left messages on Monday.
he deleted everything on Tuesday.

but they didn't speak to him, they just directly contacted him on multiple personal platforms. that's where their sticking their guns for now.
