but clarified (using extremely poor language) that if his identity DID become important, they might reveal it at a later date

no, they explicitly stated four terms: that he had better keep apologizing, feeling remorse, doesn't come back to "repeat this ugly behavior" whatever that means (seeing how he's in the news for a GIF), and that he needs to keep saying he's an example.

then they said that if he violated any of those four, they may reveal his identity.

that's not "poor language that he may become important," if he turned around and said that he wasn't sorry for making a GIF how is that worth revealing his identity? if he calls someone a slur again or makes GIFs again, how is that newsworthy? none of these are things that really say a major news network should do to ruin him. you may not like what he's saying but there's no crime being committed in what he's saying.

they could've left it at simply "because he's a private citizen" but actively didn't.
but they didn't do that. they stated four specific points then said if he violated any of that, he's fair game. either being a private citizen alone should protect against that or it's always fair game.

the response by CNN isn't much better either: they're sticking to saying "oh we didn't SPEAK to him."
which is technically true.
they just emailed him, called him, and left messages on Monday.
he deleted everything on Tuesday.

but they didn't speak to him, they just directly contacted him on multiple personal platforms. that's where their sticking their guns for now.
