Z derives from the Phoenician letter "Zayin" and the Greek "Zeta" (which, in traditional Greek, is pronounced zeh-ta rather than the English pronunciation of zay-ta). "Zed" is closer to those than "zee" and is also closer to foreign pronunciations of the word (in German, for instance, the pronunciation is "zet").

Zee was only codified in American pronunciation when Noah Webster pushed for it in order to parallel the pronunciations of b, c, d, e, g, p, t, and v and because he felt that American English needed to be separate and distinct from British English.

In ancient Greek (or at least, 5th Century BC Attic Greek), the traditional pronunciation ascribed to zeta is a zd sound as in English "wisdom", which would lend this argument for "zed" further credence. Not sure how much that actually reflects how the letter came to be pronounced in English though.

"Zed" is closer to those than "zee" and is also closer to foreign pronunciations of the word (in German, for instance, the pronunciation is "zet").

But by that logic, "zeta" and "zed" are both equally wrong as well, because if current pronunciation should be determined by original intent, then they're both corruptions as well and you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself for using either one.

We're essentially left with the dichotomy of either "original" context doesn't matter, in which case "zee" and "zed" are both equally valid (but where which is more correct is tied to regional cultural differences), or original context does matter, in which case both are equally wrong (and the only people "doing it right" are the Jews, who still use "zayin" in Hebrew).

Language has always been an evolving thing. People (usually grammar nazis) who resort to the "THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE BECAUSE THIS IS HOW IT USED TO BE!" pretty much miss the entire point of how language works (and are straight up objectively wrong and somewhat hypocritical, considering they're usually delivering that argument in English, which may be the most bastardized language to ever exist on Earth).
