I got a traffic ticket more than a month back for running a flashing red light late at night (I thought it was yellow, really tired).

Anyways, I took it to a Ticket Clinic and they heard the case yesterday. Today I looked up the case and my lawyer entered NOT GUILTY, when I was definitely guilty. I was expecting him to plead NOLO CONTEDNRE.

Obviously, that didn't work, but I got a verdict of WITHHOLD ADJUDICATION, which means I don't get any points on my license, no traffic school, no conviction, but I still need to pay court costs, $141 plus the $80 I gave ticket clinic. Its basically what my ticket would have costs with traffic school, but I skipped out on traffic school.

Holy shit your tickets are expensive. I was doing 115 in a 60, and the cop ended up writing down 100, because I was compliant. 50 over in my province is an automatic court date and a $500+ fine. What I got was $397. I'll have to fight it, because I can't afford to pay that right now, and don't want it to increase by 30%.

You guys know to ask them if they've done their inspection on their radar guns, right?

@Zangulus You could try it... It's worked here, with my roommate. If their guns aren't calibrated, how can they accurately say how fast you were going? It's one of those lazy things everyone has at their job they just don't do when they get on shift, that they really should.

I'm in Alberta. We have the most lax laws for speeding because we have photo radar here. It wasn't more than double, either. Slightly under. But like I said, they don't care too much about speeding because of the cameras, and I slowed down before he even had his lights on because I saw him after I took off at the light. He did me a favour when he wrote me down as doing only 40 over, so I didn't have to go to court and explain to a judge why I should be allowed to keep my vehicle that's registered and insured in another province. I think 60 is around 40, and 115 is around 70-75. I was clipping for sure, but it was four lanes of straight freedom... for like eight seconds.

10-40 over is a gradually increasing fine, from $115-$397ish. 50, like I said before, is over $500 and a date with a judge.

I'll probably be more careful in the future. They just use weird cars here. I've seen anywhere from canary-yellow Toyota Tacomas, to rusted-out older Honda CR-Vs pulling people over.

2) Attend an online traffic school. Two 8 hour courses. $450.

Oh that sucks. I did an online traffic school several months back for a speeding ticket in California. It was only $30 and was little more than a simple online quiz that I could do in one sitting.

That's really fucking reckless, to be honest. Asking police officers when they've last calibrated their devices might fly for 20 over, but 55 over... Christ.

I live in Florida so I guess our tickets aren't as expensive.

it also helps when the officer stops you to not admit to anything when they ask you. Just say "I don't recall". That might have helped me in court.

I think blinking red lights only happens when there's something wrong with the light system and I think they're supposed to be treated like a stop sign.

Sometimes they're set like that. The one I'm thinking of I think they do it because it would be easy to not notice a stop sign on the side. Although there is also a stop sign there, I believe.

He said he didn't even use it, he just watched his speedo lol. It wasn't a populated area or anything. In the city, they have really long, wide, straight roads with ultra-low speed limits. Also, he was driving a non-standard police ghost unit (Silver Avenger) and I thought it was just a random guy wanting to pull. I have a 2001 QX4, so it's not especially fast. I don't know why he waited so long to flick his lights on. I guess for the extra money.

oh.

around here, we just have signs about a 100 feet before a stop sign...saying there's a stop sign up ahead.

it's really...unnecessary, because it's rarely on a hilly road. you can see BOTH signs at once. it's literally just a sign telling you there's going to be a stop sign.. a pre-stop stop sign.

My last ticket was for 74 in a 55. $395 fine. I had 3 choices.

1) Pay the fine. Receive 2 points off my license.
2) Attend an online traffic school. Two 8 hour courses. $450. The ticket is vacated and I lose no points.
3) Contest it in court.

I ended up paying the fine because it was cheaper, and my insurance company forgave the ticket. They said they'd do so every 3 years. That was like 6 years ago.

4) Resist arrest and pay with your blood

In NY they are so damn thorough that they actually require the make, model, and inspection date of the radar gun on the ticket before it will even print out.

And a 115 in a 60 would pretty much be an instant suspension (not to mention a huge fine)...

Everyone should know that the "115 in a 60 zone" is in km/h, since he's Canadian. So that's more like going 70 in a 40 zone for you Americans. Still horrible, but not as insane as going 115mph...pretty much anywhere besides a race track.

Because the lawyer entered a Not Guilty plea instead of Nolo Contendre. Or maybe you are right, and pleading not guilty with the hopes of getting a deal is just what they always do?

Or perhaps, since I never admitted to any guilt when I was stopped, they reviewed the tape and saw that so the judge was forced to make a deal with the lawyer.

I honestly would like to ask a lawyer about this.
