came up in a conversation today with a friend. curious to see about board 8.

guns that are not intended for self defense or hunting count as a 'no' for the purpose of this poll. if you own a BB Gun, airsoft gun, paintball gun, etc. that's great, but it does not count for the purposes of this poll.

do they should real, lethal bullets; if no, then it falls under the no category.

if yes, it gets more complex. generally if you own multiple guns for sport I'm going to assume you know enough about guns to decide for yourself if it's modeled in the idea of a gun that is designed for hunting animals (clay shooters are used to hit targets that are literally thrown into the air and fly past you like birds) or for shooting at humanoid targets. although really if it's a gun, it shoots real, lethal bullets, and it's made for shooting at human-sized targets it may surprise you but this gun may in fact have been designed for self defense.

I mean, it's asking what the gun is intended for, which is not as clearly defined of a question.

As for what the specific model of gun is designed for... marksmanship. Hunting rifles would likely have more power and nowadays you don't use a rifle for defense, though one would advocated for a semi-auto if so.

I don't own one and particularly don't want one atm but I grew up in a household with a few and have friends that own them. They are cool.

I'm not much of a gun person.

As long as you're old enough(Children shouldn't be messing with guns imo), trained, and not a crazy person then I have no problem with anyone else owning a gun.

that's not what is happening in this topic. you just ten posts ago described your own gun as a hunting rifle without much power. you know what it is, I know what it is, we both know what it is. you're literally advocating that your motivation for using an item determines its intent and that my poll is somehow 'not clear' because of your incredibly wrong and narcissistic perception of the world. I have no idea why this is super important to you but, well, there it is.

if I pick up the fork with the intent to use it to dig out an item from underneath the fridge, does that change the fact that a fork is intended to be used as an eating utensil? what about how on a toilet it usually says 'this is designed for water and human waste products only, do not flush anything else down there.' if han decides to flush something else down there does it change the intent? no?

first of all, I am not angry.

secondly, no, that is not accurate. what do you want me to do about it? I do not possess the ability to warp reality so I cannot add additional options onto a poll that has already been created. I specifically made a post (#17) in this topic where I addressed guns made for sport and said, in my own words, that it is 'more complex.' I outlined criteria on how to best vote among the two options available to you. when you continued to be obtuse I suggested that you could simply abstain for voting.

now you're still pressing the issue.

yeah that's a good question though. I wish I had thought to make that option. usually stuff like legality doesn't really occur to me. some of my previous polls were designed so I could check how people would respond rather than what the responses were and I feel like this was a missed opportunity here.

basically would people choose to say they believe
1. people should not own guns
or
2. people should not be allowed to own guns

that's a really interesting distinction.

And no, you're still completely describing the situation incorrectly. Your poll asked if my owned firearms were intended for hunting or self-defense.

I said neither.

Then you incorrectly said that guns had to be designed for one of those two things.

So I pointed out that "intent" without context is not a clear enough question, because it's not. Intent of design, intent of use, intent of purchase, intent is not a limited word!

You then said it was clearly defined, which I said not without your addendums and explained why.

Then you said "I'm not going to argue", then continued to insult me with stupidly-contrived analogies, so I continued explaining why you're incorrect. So not only did you say you weren't going to argue anymore, but you deliberately provoked more arguing.


Once again, I'm not being intentionally obtuse. I own firearms that were designed for marksmanship in a sporting scenario. I've been pretty clear about that from my first post. Your addendums still didn't sit right with my answer, but you're being very bullheaded in refusing to accept that.
