Getting near the end of season 3, and the more I think about him in the grand scheme of things, the less I like him.

We have so many great subplots, but we're continuously told that we should pay attention to him for some reason. No, I don't fucking care if he's building an army and everyone who knows about his plan doesn't seem to really care either, so why should I?

Every scene with him could be devoted to one of the better side characters, like Arya, Sansa (is it bad that I like her despite how helpless she is?), or Gendry. Or even Brienne.

And his actor is just... horrible. Aidan Gillen doesn't know how to properly deliver a single line without coming across as wooden and cocky, especially when he has no reason to. I liked him for all of 2 episodes before I realized his own real trait is "shady infobroker."

I really hope that fucker dies moving forward. And quickly too. I don't want any more of that nonsense that Theon, the human embodiment of suffering, got.

At least Theon has semi-interesting things going on with him.

That's kind of his thing. People underestimate him while he plots. He's a snake in the grass type of character.

He's delivering his lines exactly as he's supposed to. He's always a step ahead of everyone else so he can afford to be arrogant.

Since you're only on season 3 I won't get into future spoilers but at one point he's threatened and instead of being worried or scared he points out he has information the other character needs and it wouldn't be wise to kill him.

Theon was insufferable before, and even later on he's still annoying. I do feel somewhat bad about the fact that he had his dick chopped off

Couldn't disagree more. Awesome character with a great actor.

His monologue during 'The Climb' is one of the better moments in the series.

He's not able to survive because he always has information to get him out. He survives because he's lucky. Cercei could've had him killed that one time without any delay and without any issue.

The thing is... he's not interesting to watch. He's literally the most one-dimensional character. Yeah, he loves/ed Mama Stark and is bitter about Ned showering her with the Stark family seed, but that's it? Other than that he just wants to prove how smart and "conniving" he is. He ain't shit.

He sucks in the show because all his victories in the book are pretty much taken away, so he comes off as a failure. Which is a shame cause the actor does a great job.

Except nobody seems to really trust him. He's a great information broker who occasionally plays one side against the other, but I'm not sure how much of an end-game he really has.

At least with Varys, people seemed to like and trust him despite the fact he's also a schemer and a more successful schemer at that because everything the other characters have done has actually only served to benefit his plan to restore the Targaryens to power.

He's actually not, as evidenced when Tyrion played him. He's also had several close calls, not counting in the most recent season when his big plan backfires because he saves the day during "The Battle of the Bastards" but Jon Snow winds up King in the North instead of Lady Sansa ruling it

Some would argue that he might be the most relevant character in the entire series.

Any number of people have basically described the entire story as being nothing more than the chess match being played between Littlefinger and Varys.

I've never really bought into that argument, especially because the two would at most have limited knowledge of the others' machinations and Littlefinger would have little insight into Varys's motives (unless the books reveal differently). Plus Littlefinger's plotting would essentially amount to a Xanatos Roulette whereas most of Varys's actions have been more grounded.

And keep in mind that most of Littlefinger's schemes actually benefit Varys. A weakened, fractured kingdom allows Dany, etc, to easily claim the throne. Meanwhile Littlefinger's machinations just help him climb the ranks in the established, but weakened order

I recently got HBO, so I decided to finally watch it.

But I've been told about the series as far back as mid-2014. And last year one of my roommates was actually a huge fan of the show. So I constantly heard about it (on top of masterpieces like House of Cards)

Honestly, that roommate could be really shitty (he was a STEM major who looked like Joffrey) but god damn if he didn't have good taste in television.

Well, at the beginning she was very bratty and naive, making her extremely unlikeable. Of course, at the end of Season 1, she got a major wake-up call, which persisted pretty much through the entire series so far. It's almost like the writers put her in the story for no other reason than to portray the victim, which got really old fast. But, her actions towards the end of Season 6 almost make up for it.

and i'll go you one further.

one thing i didn't notice until subsequent viewings was Littlefinger's shifting, drifting accent and inflection. first time thru, i couldn't put my finger on why i found Littlefinger so...unsettling. i mean sure, overtly he's a smarmy scheming sack of shit right out of the gate but it goes way deeper than that. Aiden Gillen is intentionally adding the affectations of a true psychopath to the role on his own, and the effect is fucking brilliant on a subliminal level.
