It's like the contest switching from 1v1 to 4 ways, you can't look at the results and predict the same way. Sure you can usually call who the winner will be, but sometimes figuring out the other 3 can be tough. Take the Frog vs Master Chief match. 7 votes out of 91 thousand decided it. Make that contest 4 ways and randomize everyone's position. At this point of the contest, there are very few anti-votes, as all of the bad users are eliminated. It's more a matter of how many voters know you well. Those that don't will stick you at the bottom of their ballots. Then you also have some users voting strategically to try and get themselves or their favorite into the Top 4.
The secret to these contests is to not make them too important a part of your life.
