{There is a fair gap here between Raetsel and I but imo this tune does a fair job at conveying some sort of despair since Dr. Light's Lab is found attacked and destroyed when you hear it. Hmm...looking at it, the problem would be trying to cut the list for a spin-off ranking topic to "only" 200 songs.

Then I'd naturally want to include some missing songs from this topic: Mega Man Shop (from 10), the DLC stage songs from 9 & 10... maybe Shade Man's alternate theme (even though it's from a different game entirely).

Rockman Strategy seemed to have good music, but all the tracks are unnamed which I suppose disqualifies it. Unfortunately.

Street Fighter x Mega Man music is amusing, but I suppose we really wouldn't be doing Mega Man music at all at that point. </.< [I still need to play that eventually.]

Then if for some reason one wanted more remixes of existing songs there's always the Arcade Games & Wily Wars, which may actually have had some unique songs too for all I know. Complete Works for some interesting covers of all the NES music (I wouldn't say better; most of the ones I've heard are worse. But they are interesting and different); Game Gear if you want some bad covers. Battle & Fighters for yet more covers...


...so probably not happening. If not because doing another 200 Classic Mega Man songs is insane, then because I could never limit myself to only 200 more.

A bouncy, amusement park type tune. It works for what it is, but I'd be okay with never hearing it again.

So...evil anthropomorphic spring. That's a thing. And this one is even officially built by Dr. Wily himself, it's not one of the many robots he stole and reprogrammed. He actually built this thing intentionally.

It was an abandoned toy factory and some Capcom characters had cameo appearances in toy forms. Ryu & Chun-Li from Street Fighter, along with Nina from Breath of Fire. It's so cute and so much better than the generic amusement park we were stuck with in the final version.

{I assumed I'd make the hypothetical spin-off song list; It makes sense that you made this list of songs, as you wanted to do 200 songs from 1 through 10. It thus makes sense that I'd make the other one, as I'm the one that wants to do 200 songs from an assortment of other games.

Less interested in an X Ranking. I might still join in, but there's no single game that I'd be hyped to go over. I'd actually get excited for Powered Up, the Game Boy games, and Rockboard; I'd even love an excuse to talk about that obscure WonderSwan Rockman & Forte game (though I still need to go play it first), even if the music is terrible. Then there's the fact that Farewell to Ballade might be the best MM10 song, so I'd also enjoy getting to track down some of the "missing" songs and go through them...


X series probably has better music, but there's no particular game that I'd be really excited for.


Back to the current topic: I was too harsh on 7's soundtrack on the write-ups themselves. I was just disappointed: Both because the soundtrack had fewer high points than I expected & because it was one of the soundtracks I was most looking forward to... the first Classic game I finished, the only SNES game giving it a unique sound compared to everything else on the list, I was genuinely excited for it and saved it for last. Then it...really did not live up to expectations. It's not nearly as bad as I made it out to be (if I truly never wanted to hear it again, this song wouldn't have gotten a 4 under Elimination Pie), but it was disappointing.



EDIT: Of course, if I did the spin-off ranking topic entirely by myself, then I could get away with whatever insanity I wanted... could just go with my top 200 songs that weren't part of this Ranking topic, instead of trying to give a good amount of representation to each game (which results in Soccer getting way too many songs. How much was it? Like title theme, ending, credits, and around 11 different fields?). Or I could ditch the 200 song limit and rank everything I wanted to, with no upper limit. Gives an excuse to include the Game Gear game: "Q: Why are you including the Game Gear soundtrack when it is just blatantly a worse version of the NES songs?" "A: 'Cause I wanted to and without any set number of songs, it really doesn't matter how many slots I waste aimlessly."

EDIT 2: And Rockman Strategy! If it's 100% for my own amusement, I certainly don't have to care that the songs are unlabeled. A normal ranking for other people would want context of when those songs played; I just want to listen and rank them anyway.

Which is fair; I still might go for a spin-off/missing song ranking myself at some point in the future though. It's not something anyone else would be interested in, but I actually really want to go over those soundtracks.


X is fine, I just...lack any strong feelings to a single character or game--even the spin-offs like Command Mission & the two Xtreme games that presumably wouldn't be part of your list anyway. They're perfectly fine games and I enjoyed them--I even managed a Buster Only/no upgrades other than Leg Parts run on the first game--but...none of them were really that memorable for me. I don't think I could name a single Maverick from X2 or X3, without having to resort to guessing. (I can probably name a decent number from X1 and X4 since I did multiple runs through both of those; X6 is the one where the English translation changed everyone's names to be Guns & Roses references, right? I could probably name a few of those, if I had to. Unless it was X5 with all the name changes, I always get those two mixed up...)}

It occurs to me that I've actually never heard a whole album by Michael Jackson. I know his greatest hits, but... well, like I said in the intro (or, more accurately, plan on saying in the intro; I haven't actually wrote it at the time of this write-up, but I'm sure I will before the topic goes up. At least, we'll hope so, or this is going to be very confusing) I very rarely listen to music, so I've actually missed some albums that it feels like I should have listened to. I like Michael Jackson (at least, the popular songs everyone knows), I like 80's music, yet have skipped almost all of his work.

As for the song I'm supposed to be listening to, eh. There's no reason to listen to it when Thriller exists, but I'll give it some credit for the reference.

{So, never did make an intro post, but the short version is that while I've certainly heard music, it's very rare that I make any effort to actually listen to some. Music's usually just background noise while in a car, or as a mild distraction while I'm working on something, or as part of a soundtrack to whatever I'm actually paying attention to. I almost never listened to music with the specific goal of listening & focusing on the music itself.

That kinda went double for game soundtracks. There are very, very few game songs that I liked or recognized as more than random background noise. As far as I was concerned, there really wasn't an applicable difference between the silence of the PC Mega Man games and the NES eras soundtracks. Whether there was music or not was almost completely irrelevant to my gaming experience.

Or to put it another way: I'm the type of person that used Custom Soundtracks throughout the entirety of Nier because instrumental music, no matter how critically beloved, was nothing I cared about.


Which is why I wanted to try an all instrumental game music ranking to begin with. Try actually listening to this stuff and see if I developed an appreciation for it. Which...kinda worked? I like quite a few of the songs from the ranking, though I don't think I'm paying any more attention to the soundtracks of anything I watch or play.


As for Michael Jackson, I did listen to a 2-CD collection of his Greatest Hits since that write-up. I still haven't listened to a single studio album, but the collection had almost every song from Thriller on it. So...I almost heard a whole album. </.<}

I don't care if you call it bad, that's fine. What I care about is you saying it's your least favorite because that is some awful taste.

This song combines everything I hate into one painful, noisy mess. It's inexcusable for a 32-bit era song to be this terrible; NES is one thing, with its limited capabilities and small cartridge sizes. With all the new technology and disc space, they wasted it making something worse than the old games.

Individual Game ranking was supposed to grade everything from 1-to-10, but no, this song does not deserve even that one point.

{This sounds more like an RPG tune but still sounds like a pretty standard 8-bit intro. I don't mind it but there really isn't much excitement here for me. It does make me think of Little Nemo Dream Master or even Chip n' Dales Rescue Rangers which were both made by Capcom also.}
