Nier is kind of easy though, plus you can install a plug-in chip that nullifies hitstun on you by turning you invulnerable after being hit

I didn't know that! I didn't really interact with the systems in the game all that much because that's not really what I was playing for. Maybe after Persona I'll go back and mess with it a bit more.

Managing your chips is a major part of being in a good place combat wise. It would be like going through most other RPG's without ever changing your weapon and other equips.

You missed out on a lot if you ignored plug-in chips. Invulnerability after being hit, shockwave projectiles that fire from melee attacks, auto-pick-up-item, evade dash length boost, movement speed boost, health regain when damaging enemy, health regain on not being damaged, time slow on a perfect dodge, parry counter attacks, chests displayed on the minimap...yeah.

Playing Nier without chips sounds really painful. Especially during an initial run on hard, where most stuff will 1-2 shot you without any defensive chips. (Anti chain damage feels pretty much mandatory, getting grazed by any multi-hit enemy is an instant death sentence.)

Even hard mode eventually becomes really easy though so I don't know how mindless normal gets. Maybe a chipless run isn't too bad there.

Yeah, I didn't completely ignore it. I mostly used passive buffs to stats but I did use some of the health regain stuff and item auto-use. It was very hard to actually die, so I agree that the game wasn't super hard or anything, I just felt like there were times were it was hard to keep track of what was going on on-screen.

I get the itch to play one every 5 years or so and this one had a lot of positive buzz leading up to its launch, so I figured it was worth a shot.

About 5 hours into Persona now. I actually think this game's start is even slower than 4's. There's a little more gameplay in the opening hours than in 4, but I also feel like it's on rails for longer.

Not crazy about the demon negotiation. I didn't like it in other SMT games and don't really like it here, but it's a minor gripe and I really have nothing else to complain about with the game thus far.

it's based on demon personality. you can negotiate with demons in lieu of an all-out attack. it's a good way to earn money.

Black Mesa is just a modernized version of HL1. I've heard only good things about it so it should be fine to start with. Original HL1 is still a very good game too - I should really try out Black Mesa sometime.


Up to 3/5 endings beaten and 85% of sidequests completed in Nier Automata. This game is...something. Manages to hold the spirit of Nier 1 while feelling totally different. As crazy as Nier 1's plot got in your second playthrough, it overall followed a traditional story progression of buildup->payoff->buildup->payoff. Nier Automata puts more emphasis on the smaller moments. There's an overarching plot but the real story is in the inhabitants of its world and how they're dealing with the nature of what they are on a day-to-day basis. Automata has some very good cutscenes (including one development that I'm still coming to terms with) but the strongest thing sticking with me right now is a completely optional side-quest with no reward and no combat that ends with a random machine ranting at the heavens about how sick and twisted its own existence is before jumping to its death. Actually, there's a lot of robot suicide in this game. It makes sense all things considered but man. Automata might actually be Yoko Taro's most depressing game yet which is saying something!

Of course, there's 2 endings left. I might be way off base! My entire viewpoint may change dramatically very soon! Do not tell me if it will!

i played half-life almost a decade after its release and still had a great time with it. definitely lives up to its reputation. last i heard about black mesa was that it's not even complete. granted, the last parts of half-life are its weakest, but i think its ending is worth going through those final areas!

i was planning on playing a lot of persona 5 this sunday, but a bad headache, a sore throat, dark souls 3 dlc, and this article i'm finishing up ranking all 5 souls game were in the way. taking a sick leave today to recover, and by that i mean play a ton of persona 5!

it took me roughly 35 hours, but last night I finally completed the first main quest in Zelda. I met Impa.

As great as it is to go off wherever you want in BotW, I kinda feel like it's worth mainlining the first few story quests just so you get some of the additional slate functionality early.

I've managed just fine.

I think the highlight of the game so far was my encounter with the Divine Beast in the Zora Domain. When my nephew saw what it was it blew his mind because he's watched some late game videos of people playing with the entire HUD.
