have you been following the show lately? not a patron so i don't know why they're still going for that long, but yeah they really sound like they're just slogging through with how much they don't like dark souls 3 and the dlc. it's been hard listening since i really like 3, too! i get where they're coming from most of the time, but boy do they get nitpicky in these last couple of episodes. it's expected because obviously the little things get magnified when your emotions are already heightened.

I listen to every episode, although I haven't listened to the DLC episodes because I haven't played the DLC. I think I enjoy 3 more than they do and would push back strongly on the idea that the DS3 season was a hard listen.

edit: oh I guess I shouldn't say I listen to every episode now that we're in the interstitial season, because they're covered some games like Hyper Light Drifter I would like to experience myself before I hear their take.

honestly the real bummer is that they're dropping the pie-in-the-sky Final Fantasy podcast as a Patreon tier reward because without Dark Souls bringing in the big bucks, they reasonably believe they won't achieve it anytime soon. but they're going to cover FFIV in the summer, so I guess I'm good?

WOFF! Will Change Schedules in August

The changes to the WOFF! schedule will begin August 3, with Final Fantasy IV month. That’s right, we’ll be covering all of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. For reference, here’s the schedule up through that point:

Crimson Shroud (May 11)
Pilotwings (May 25)
Yakuza (June 1)
SSX Tricky (June 15)
NOX(June 29)
Metal Gear Solid 2, Part 1 (July 13)
Metal Gear Solid 2, Part 2 (July 20)
Final Fantasy IV, Part 1 (August 3)
Final Fantasy IV, Part 2 (August 10)
The After Years, Part 1 (August 17)
The After Years, Part 2 (August 24)
Final Fantasy IV Responses (August 31)

What’s Happening to the Crystal Chronicles?

You may wonder what us covering FF4 on WOFF! means for the Final Fantasy show we had planned. It means that show won’t happen. We pegged that show at a very high milestone amount because it would take a tremendous amount of work. But as Bonfireside Chat wound down, we realized we probably wouldn’t hit that total any time soon. And redesigning WOFF! presented an opportunity to cover the Final Fantasy games that were meaningful to us without taking on an unreasonable workload that would harm the rest of the shows.

i think my memories have also just been heightened because i'm pretty sure they trashed the end of the main game (gary hates the final boss), and it's been non-stop since then! they were also sorta holding out hope that the dlc would redeem the game for them, and it didn't.

this last proper episode was nearly 3 hours of them dumping on/not caring about the second dlc and repeating their overall exasperation and disappointment with dark souls 3. and i really like these two dlcs! so yeah, it's been rough for me.

still respect what they've done and how they arrive at their opinions. that's why i've stuck with them through the whole season! i've always relied on the community for lore interpretation and analysis, and they're probably the best at being critical while also being open. i just also haven't found myself arriving at the same conclusions they get to in regards to the mechanics, the enemy encounters, and the boss battles.

i had no idea how huge bsc is for them since it's literally the only thing they do that i follow. think i said it before, but their humor just doesn't click with me. maybe it's weird, but that's probably why i haven't bothered checking out their other stuff!

so I was just waiting for PC performance feedback on Prey before I committed to it, and my initial impressions are: MAN is this game ever made for me. vent crawling and stealth and inventory management and skill trees - it's everything I love about the Shock games, or Deux Ex, or Dishonoured. so cool. very very early still, though.

The more I play of Yooka-Laylee, the less I like it. Aside from the camera issues, the games doesn't really control that well. I never quite feel like I have full agency over the way Yooka moves, which can be brutal on platforming segments. A lot of the challenges are very tedious too, which gets frustrating.

I don't really think it's a matter of these kinds of games not being good anymore either because it wasn't that long ago that I replayed Banjo-Kazooie, and don't remember having these problems with it.

I don't know if this is true for you or not, but sometimes games played in your youth make it kind of immune from criticisms even years later. I know I'm that way with a lot of games. I don't think I would accept Xenogears's quirks if it came out today.

So I took up playing Pokémon TCG Online on my wife's iPad recently. Nothing too serious, just a bit of a time-waster when nothing else is going on. Had the most terrible luck getting energy draw the last couple games, but the one before my opponent did too. We say there for six turns with my Torkoal doing a no-damage burn attack because I couldn't get the energy for body slam while his Volcanion did a 20 damage attack because he couldn't get the energy for whatever his other attack was.

Eventually my Singe won out and he conceded.

Almost done with Blood and Wine, but not sure I want any of these endings. Witcher 3 pretty good stuff and even though it's nice how it is I kinda wish some more quests had better outcomes. Most stuff is either really morally gray or a choice between two nearly equal asshats and while it's realistic it also leaves me feeling unsatisfied after a lot of them. Main characters were mostly pretty good for the time they were around which can feel like super long stretches if you are sidequesting a lot. Best/most memorable characters imo - Geralt, Ciri, Vesimir, Zoltan, Lambert, Bloody Baron, Cerys, Crach, Shani, Regis and Vlodimir. Think I got most of them anyways, but there are tons and I played for like 200 hours so I could be forgetting somebody. Well somebody other than Whoreson "what the sandwich fuck is this!?" Jr.

I think I saw PLAYERUNKNOWN announce a console version last week? Or plans to work on one? It's obviously coming, you don't sell 2M+ in a couple months on PC, and become one of the biggest games on Twitch without getting the attention of platform holders.

Man, I'm getting three game books next week. Yikes. I have an order for Future Press' Nioh and Last Guardian books, and I finally bit the bullet on getting the Deus Ex art book because it's down to a decent price on Amazon.

i hear that's in the plans? would love for it to happen too! can't think of a reason for it not to. maybe it gets a name change? what it is right now is kinda bad and generic! it being in early access shouldn't prevent that either, what with all the games in beta that's available on consoles right now too.

speaking of which, i tried out paladins aka totally not overwatch. came out last week on ps4 and xbone. since it's free and a friend said he enjoyed it quite a bit, i've been giving it a shot. it's totally alright given its pedigree, and it does things differently enough that i think it can exist as its own thing.

yeah, it's still in beta, but i do think hi-rez isn't going to be changing much about how it feels, and it certainly doesn't feel as tight, weighty, and responsive as overwatch! budget f2p game indeed.

also decided to check out the tomorrow children. what a great looking labor simulator. if only the requirements to build anything weren't so steep and the tutorials weren't so lacking, i could see myself really digging into it. but boy does it not give you much to work with.

got no excuses now to continue dragon age. i should really get to it so i can eventually start nier.

Super weird. I went ahead and uninstalled Nioh entirely, because it started showing it as installed when it clearly wasn't and even using the "Download to PS4" thing from the website actually froze the webpage and crashed my browser.

So I'll see what happens tomorrow once this downloads. Until then, back to The Old Blood
